Paraty - prounounced Para-chi. What a little heaven on earth - and it rained all bar 10 minutes of our 48 hours here. I can´t imagine what it is like with the sun out! Driving towards the coast from Sao Paulo really made my heart beat a little faster. The scenery was spectacular dark green rivers weaving around the lucious mountains and then glimpses of the ocean. Aaaahhhhhhh! I can´t even remember what time we arrived but it´s not important anyways - the place we stayed was really cool - hammocks on every balcony! We wandered in to town to check it out. What a lovely little place. The marina is filled with brightly coloured schooners and sailing boats. The streets of the old part of town are for foot traffic only - which is a ... read more

Please take back everything I ever said about Brazil being cleaner than Argentina - Sao Paulo is FILTHY! We arrived to our hotel about 9pm and stayed in Kings Cross equivalent - but in a city of 19 millin people I´m sure you can imagine what it was like! They had carnival type celebratins going on which we watched from our hotel window. There was loads of people all partying and dancing down the street to the samba sound coming off the float. It was really cool! We had typical type Brazilian BBQ feast for dinner - I ordered a bottle of Brazilian red - big mistake, it was like grape juice! The meat was great! Afterwards we headed out for a few ´quiet´drinks right next to our hotel at the local lesbian bar Maryjane .....EEEEEeeeeek. ... read more

Curitiba (pronounced Curichiba)... this wont be a long one. We arrived after a long overnight bus but it was much better than the first - I slept pretty much the whole way, waking up now and again to crack my neck back into place ;) We had a little wander through town and Mark gave us the history, it´s a tourist destination because of the fantastic urban planning, it´s quite clean and well cared for. Curitibians all think it is the most wonderful place on earth - although one did admit to me that they do lack a beach.... Haha! We spent the afternoon wandering around the shops and bought some nail polish which feels like a real luxury now. We had a little rest and then got into party mode as it was Saturday night ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Iguazú National Park February 25th 2011

We arrived to Puerto Iguazu (The Argentinian side of the falls) quite late in the evening after leaving the ranch. Puerto Iguazu means door so I guess it means door to the falls. I had an early night being buggered from the ranch! We headed to the Iguazu NP first thing in the morning. Iguazu falls means ´big water´ in Guarani. The story goes that there was a beautiful Indian woman who fell in love with a warrior from the national park and he fell in love with her too but she was already planned to marry one of the gods of the forest. She and her warrior lover escaped in a canoe but the god was so enraged that he created the waterfalls and apparently she ended up on bottom of the riverbed while the ... read more

Buenos dias chicos! The overnight bus journey from Uruguay to Argentina was to be honest a little long and not particularly comfortable - but we made it, we saw a dead body on the way out of the bus stop on our arrival, a man who had been knowcked off his bike just laying in the road with a sheet on top, not like at home where police and ambulance cars are used to shield everything - it was morbid! Apart from that crossing the border was completely uneventful! We arrived at our hostel in San Ignacio at about 11am and it was raining and miserable so what do we decide to do, rent bikes to ride around town on of course! We were abcolutely covered in red mud after about 10 minutes, not to mention ... read more

Well needless to say the attempts at relaxing a little more in Colonia were thrown out the window after a few Coronas and some cheesy garlic and brocoli pizza (strange eh) sitting out on the deck of a lovely little restaurant which looked right out over the river that separates uruguay from argentina. Apparently (and I could imagine) it´s an amazing spot to watch the sunset but it was still raining and overcast so we missed it :( But the pizza was great! We also met a couple from Spain who were staying at the local hostel and who were really nice so we ended up heading back to their hostel to meet a few other travellers! It was an AWESOME night! I think we ended up rolling in the door at about 6am - which ... read more

Hola again! I´m getting a little bit of a backlog on blogging, seems to be I write some and then continue to write it over a day or two and publish later so I hope I´m not losing you too much! Tour actually began today! We caught the ferry from BA to Colonia in Uruguay! The journey took about 3 hours and we found ourselves a stalker on the way which was lovely - NOT! But it´s okay he was stalking all blonde women on the Ferry so at least we weren´t singled out! The journey took about 3 hours and we had a little nap on the way over! There are 18 of us touring - ageing from 22 to probably about 60 ish (it would be rude to ask). All Aussies, Brits and 1 ... read more

So where were we...... After my last email we went to the famous Recoleta cemetry right accross from where we are staying. It only took us three days but its always the way isn´t it? Definitely different to our cemetries at home. EEEeeeekkkk! You can actually see the coffins inside the big stone coffin houses, with white cloths and vases and crosses and other religous things. It´s most famous for being where Eva Peron is buried so we went for a squiz at her grave which was just like all of the rest of them really, but with more flowers. I think I might read her autobiography when I finish my current book, sounds like an amazing story! Then last night we hit uptown for a real proper Tango show. It was called Sabor a Tango ... read more

Well I can certainly say Day 1 in BA ended with a huge BANG! Not long after writing my initial entry Nic and I went to a local bar for a drink and got talking to the bar man. We were asking him about La Bomba ( a really well known Argentinian percussion band who suposedly play on Monday nights. He got onto Google for us and wrote down the address and the next thing I know we are trotting through the park towards the main road, plastic beer cups in hand, (because in Argentina if you´re in a rush they´re like here have a plastic cup and take it with you, HOW FUN!). Mind you it was 6:30 and they were starting at 7. I don´t even have any idea which part of town we ... read more

Good morning folks. Well we got here safely. Arrived at about 10am and it´s now almost 5pm so needless to say it´s been a very very long Valentines day :) Getting into the city was a little tricky, I forgot to write down the address of the hotel we are staying at, I figured the name and suburb would be enough but of course there are 6 hotels with the same name in the city area. Typical eh! Anyways, after finally getting to email (whilst at one of the other 6 hotels with the same name) we got it sorted and turns out we are staying in a gorgeous little studio apartment directly accross from the cemetry in Recoleta. Best thing about it...... the shower. I always have an expectation that hotel showers are going to ... read more
