South America January 8th 2011

The last few days have been amazing (here is the part where you all get jealous because you are stuck in cold, wet, Canadian winter-weather). We took the bus to Nazca and Amy bought a flight to fly over the famous Nazca lines (it was too expensive for me though $135 USD!), while she did that I explored a really neat market in Nazca and got some great photos. When we first got there, Nazca seemed to me like an old western ghost town, it was mid afternoon and it was windy, and dusty and really hot. Somewhere in the 33-35 C range. Something my pale Canadian skin is still adjusting to! But when the sun goes down things really come alive! Kids playing in the square, people out walking, vendors with food. I guess that ... read more

Well it was a long travel day on Sunday and our flight leaving Vancouver was a bit delayed. We thought that we might have a tough time making our connection in Houston, so we asked the flight attendant what time she thought we would land and if we would make our second flight. She said no way, you will never make it. We figured she was lying or just confused, so we got off the plane and ran through the terminal like idiots, got to our gate and discovered that not only was our time change off by an hour (we thought it was an hour later than it was), but our flight was delated by 2.5 hours. So Amy and I rush up to the gate 5 mins before we thought it was leaving, breathlessly ... read more

Well folks, this is it. I'm officially leaving on Sunday. This will likely be my last blog before I go. HOLY $#%@! I leave Sunday! That sort of hit me yesterday when I was saying good bye to my family. So today was spent madly packing and making sure I had everything I needed. I'd love to include my packing list, but the hardcore backpackers out there will probably all tell me I'm taking too much. And to that I say "I tried!". I really did. I probably went through and put back half the clothes I had originally planned to take. Not bad I think. The real space is honestly being taken up by all the other stuff aside from clothes. The mountain of drugs I was prescribed in case I need them, as well ... read more

So I spent $300 CAD on shots last week. I had to get: Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Tetanus/Diptheria and Hepatitis A. I also got Dukoral which I take this weekend in a liquid form and again next weekend. The travel clinic nurse also gave me prescriptions for malaria, altitude sickness and some antibiotics in case I get any stomach flu. I spent a few days with my arms in agony, fevers, chills... apparently my body was just not ready in any way for vaccines! It makes me wonder why we go travelling in places where we might die unless we get vaccinated. Part of me worries, but the other part is EXCITED. As though I'm taking a HUGE risk even just GOING there. It was interesting though what the nurse told me about typhoid: Nurse: "There is ... read more

Well the official countdown has started for a journey that will be pretty incredible. I've been looking forward to making this trip since I was about 19 and met a co-worker who just came back from Bolivia. The wild stories and pictures piqued my interest then and have held me in an iron fist ever since. My long-time friend Amy and I are travelling together for 2 months through Peru and Bolivia. I've started thinking about all kinds of things: 1. I'm a 5'10" female - will I fit through doorways, on buses or in beds? how are the locals going to handle that? 2. Amy is a vegetarian - how is Amy going to handle that? 3. We're going during the rainy season - just how WET is it really going to be? All lists ... read more
