South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz February 24th 2011

Amy and I met up again in La Paz, she was dead tired after doing her hike up to Huayna Potosi, but was thrilled to have finished it. It was a very challenging trek, using crampons, ice picks and all sorts of winter gear. I am impressed with her, and after hearing stories from other people about how hard it was, I am proud of my little travel buddy! We had plans to go to Coroico, but what with the amount of rain, washed out roads and transportation strikes plaguing us this whole trip, we were advised not to go because we may have been delayed coming back to La Paz which would have meant possibly missing a series of about 4 flights to get home. Therefore we decided to go skiing! The owner of the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre February 19th 2011

After an amazing few days in Cochabamba where we did not really get up to a whole ton except enjoy the City, Amy and I both bought bus tickets to head in opposite directions. Amy wanted to do an ice climbing trek to a mountain somewhere in the 6,000 m altitude range outside of La Paz and I wanted to go visit Sucre. After our last day in Cochabamba, I got on my night bus that I was dreading for the entire day. Mostly because it was the only bus that said they had cama (bed seats) yet it was only Bs. 60 (which is about $9) for the 12-hour ride. Needless to say I expected the worst. However, my recent experiences with other horrible night buses had me prepare well in advance for the discomfort. ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni February 14th 2011

First of all, Happy Valentine´s Day to Mr. Kerry Parsons. Sappy, yes. Get over it! So after getting back to La Paz from the Amazon, we jumped on a night bus down to Uyuni, which was the worst bus in the history of buses. It was a dirt road, which made it extremely bumpy and almost impossible to sleep. It was also freezing cold. I thought I had prepared with enough warm clothes, but alas my female circulation failed me and my feet froze. We also had to get out in the morning and ford a river by foot so that there was less weight on the bus so it wouldn´t bottom out (apparently bridges don´t really exist here). Despite the delay we did manage to meet up with our Salar de Uyuni (salt flats) tour ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque February 9th 2011

Well we had a day to fool around in La Paz before our flight to Rurrenabaque, so Amy elected to go for a hike and returned with a sprained ankle and a big grin. It was apparently a very challenging hike, but she rocked it. I spent the day wandering around the Black Market, browsing llama fetuses in the witches market, buying some gifts, exchanging books and generally exploring the City. I also had an incredible steak for lunch! The next morning we jumped on our flight down into the Amazon basin. We heard that the Bolivian Amazon is the most untouched part of the entire jungle, so we figured we would have a great time. We dropped off our gear at a hostel, and went out in the intense humidity to track down one of ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana February 2nd 2011

So we finally arrived in La Paz after a long trek around Lake Titicaca. Well it wasn´t really that long, we just took our sweet time. After spending a day or two on the islands on the Peruvian side we took a bus across the border with no problems and arrived in Cochabamba. We found a great little hostel and had some food while we got our laundry done and various other errands such as: sleeping, reading my book, napping and laying around. Amy got all kinds of things done: shopping, hiking up the nearest mountain and talking with locals. All in all it was a great first day in Bolivia. The next morning we jumped on a boat to go out to the Isla del Sol. For those of you who can´t speak Spanish (I ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon January 29th 2011

Well this computer is not the quickest, so all I coud get was one photo uploaded. I will add some more at the next computer I find. In the meantime, after our adventures in Cusco, we hopped a night bus to Arequipa, which is slighty south east of Cusco. We got there pretty early, had a great breakfast overlooking the Plaza and then found our hostel by about 8:00 a.m. I laid down for a few minutes while Amy organized her stuff and then we woke up and it was 1:00 p.m. Needless to say the night bus was not as good as the one we had going to Cusco. So we peeled ourselves out of bed and headed to a vegetarian restaurant for a buffet, which Amy was thrilled about, I had a good meal ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail January 21st 2011

First of all, I finally ate cuy, which is guinea pig. It was ok until my stomach decided that the process of eating an animal roasted whole like that was no good and protested. I will not likely eat it again, but it was a good learning experience! We left the hostel pretty early in the morning on the 17th to catch the bus out to the starting point for the Inca Trail. We loaded up our gear, clothes etc. that we had brought, as well as the sleeping bag and sleeping mat the trek company provided, and started the hike. In the first day we hiked through some pretty incredible scenery. We saw some ruins, lots of tropical plants because it was the rainy season, and we went through a few small areas where people ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco January 16th 2011

So we arrived in Cuzco around 11:00 a.m. and found a great hostel a little bit up on the hill. Cuzco is really neat and a lot of their streets are actually just stairs. Which with the thin air of the high altitude, a large backback, and me out of shape, saw me show up at the door to the hostel and barely able to get two words out. Thankfully Amy is better at Spanish, and apparently more fit! After we dropped off our stuff we went exploring and had some lunch. Amy, Warrior Princess, finally started to feel the effects of the altitude and felt a bit drunk when we were eating lunch. So we both decided that we would take the advice of our previous hostel owner and rest and eat small meals and ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Paracas January 12th 2011

The day after we arrived in Paracas we jumped on a boat to go out and see the Islas des Ballestas. On the way out we drove past the peninsula called the Paracas National Reserve, I will mention this later since we actually went out there. But on the coast as we drove by it in our boat we got a chance to see a glyph, kind of like the Nazca lines. The local Peruvians think of it as being a cactus since that is a big part of their culture and native religion, the Europeans sailors who came through thought of it as being a candelabra that guided their way to land. Either way it was pretty spectacular, also since it was carved into rock whereas the Nazca lines are just rocks arranged on the ... read more
