South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia July 29th 2013

Managed to book flights WELL in advance and avoided a monster bus journey from BA to Ushuaia - the flight was still around 6 hours down the continent which is crazy when you think about the fact it takes around 6-7 hours to fly to DUBAI from the UK. We travelled for that long down the same country! Ushuaia City is classed at the ´end of the world city´as it is only 1000km to antartica (meaning it was quite cold down there!), and if you had the funds (around $5000 US for a 10 day trip) it takes around two days of sailing to reach the south pole. Ushaia is dwarfed by the towering Andes which are classed as both from the Argentinian and Chilian sides of the continent. They are all snowed peaked and the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires July 20th 2013

It´s 8am, the temperature has dropped and the landscape is now urban, we´ve arrived in Buenos Aires. We enter the bus station bleary eyed and stiff from our journey, we hail a cab and are soon on route to our hostel. The hostel offers activities every day, some you have to pay for and some are free. Today there is a free walking tour which covers the immediate area, San Telmo, and discusses the recent turbulent political history. It´s very interesting but very sad at the same time. Around 30,000 people went missing during the early 80´s and these were people perceived at the time to be political dissidents by the military dictatorship in control. These people are known as the ´disappeared´ (which means they were tortured and then killed). What we didn´t realise was this ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Iguaçu Falls July 15th 2013

Our flight from Brazil arrived around 7pm and after a short taxi ride we arrived at our hostel, Iguassu Hostel. Original name I know, but that was the theme when naming hostels and hotels in the area.......... Hotel Iguassu Royal , Costa Del Sol Iguassu, Iguassu Grand Resort to name a few we passed. The hostel was good, it had a nice little bar and pool area. Not that we got much chance to use them. We decided to visit the Brazilian side of the falls first, this involved catching a bus from the station which was a short walk from the hostel. 30 minutes later we arrived, paid and got another short bus ride to the falls. It´s all very organised. After a short walk down the path we reached the falls. Our first thoughts ... read more

We spent 6 days in Rio, and it was fantastic!..To kick start the trip we decided to tandem handglide from the moutains in the Sao Corado region which is amongst the rainforest...Thoroughly enjoyed it despite questioning why l wanted to run off a platform into thin air strapped to a strange Brazilian called Alex! but we managed it and loved every second. We flew above the rainforest like birds, over the sea and finally landing on the beach. We also completed the main gringo trail, walking along the copacabana and Ipanema beaches (Craig and myself competing to find the man with the smallest pair of budgey smugglers on), going up to the Christ de Redentor to marvel at the city from one of its highest points, walking around the lagoa and watching sunset and Rio lighting ... read more
