Managed to book flights WELL in advance and avoided a monster bus journey from BA to Ushuaia - the flight was still around 6 hours down the continent which is crazy when you think about the fact it takes around 6-7 hours to fly to DUBAI from the UK. We travelled for that long down the same country!
Ushuaia City is classed at the ´end of the world city´as it is only 1000km to antartica (meaning it was quite cold down there!), and if you had the funds (around $5000 US for a 10 day trip) it takes around two days of sailing to reach the south pole. Ushaia is dwarfed by the towering Andes which are classed as both from the Argentinian and Chilian sides of the continent. They are all snowed peaked and the city looks prety overlooking the lagoon and beyond.
We stayed in the hostel which had a resident husky dog and which had a million rules written all over the building ranging from ´íf you make noise from midnight, we will ask you to leave´,to ´do not bring smelly shoes into the rooms´, ´no eating in the den´and´do not wash clothes in the sinks´.....very
relaxed hostel! But it did have hot showers and central heating which was much needed and appreciated.
Donning my long johns, thermal vest, jeans, t-shirt, jumper, fleece, two hats, gloves, neck warmer and coat we ventured out on our first trip. This was on a small boat and sailed around the smaller islands in the lagoon seeing the sea lions, birds, penguins and also taking a short hike on another island which provided us with a panoramic view of Ushuaia the city - we went on the afternoon trip so we were lucky enough to watch sunset on the city which was lovely. We also learnt about the Yamana´s who were the indiginous people who lived in the area. They were nomads and lived in canoes and despite the freezing temperatures were tough enough not to wear any clothes! respect!
The other trip we completed was a 4x4 tour of the mountains and lakes around the area, which consisted of some off road action and a lovely huge Argentian BBQ or chicken, lamb, pork, and chorizo sauasages. Having chorizo sausage meant we could idulge in another foodie favourite of mine - choripan - which is a chorizo sausage
cut into and put in a baguette (a sausage sandwich to me or you- but it is delicious!).
Ushuaia is a beautiful place and well worth the out of the wayness of travelling to go and see it. There lots to do, more so in the summer months, but we loved being their in the cold when the weather was still on the wild side. Need to get saving our 2ps´to get ourselves onto an antartic trip.
Onwards and upwards now, literally - up to El Calafate to check out the Perito Moreno glacier.
Things we have learnt in Ushuaia;
1) South America is a HUGE continent!
2) I love a good HUGE steak!
3) Id quite like a husky dog
4) Need to keep practicing Spanish at EVERY opportunity!
