Our stay in Perth was with friends Stef and Anna, this was turning into the friendship tour of Australia! Its great to have friends in all sorts of places around the world, it gives you an excuse to visit! Perth feels quite compact for a city and getting around it was quite easy. A short taxi ride from the airport and we were at Stef and Anna's. They have a lovely place in the 'burbs of Perth with a nice pool and a lovely little dog called Bovver, a great place to relax in the sun. Stef was at work so we spent the first afternoon catching up with Anna. Bother is a Border Terrier, yes the dog from Something About Mary. We only got to see Stef and Anna for a few days before they ... read more

Leaving Sydney friends behind we arrived to see more friends from England-ones who we hadn't seen in two years and within that space of time had added another little man to their family. We were super excited -I have been friends with Gemma since my uni days and her and her fiancé mark have been over in Australia for a few years now and and are living the dream in brisvegas with their two sons (Alfie and Oliver) and marks mum Theresa. We had two weeks with the family and it was very relaxing and all about spending time with the kids in the day doing things such as opening the exclusive Harrison/twigg water park -this consisted of a slip and slide and paddling pool with mini slide going into it -muchos fun!, going to different ... read more

We passed the international date line on the way to Australia which meant we were transported into the future, no flux capacitors needed. When you pass this line it instantaneously becomes the next night, I'm not getting any younger so it wasn't appreciated. This was to be my first visit to Australia and everyone I know who has visited has only great things to say about it. Plus we were getting to spend time with friends we'd not seen for a while, this was going to be a good Christmas and new year! Lisa and Lauren met us at the airport and after many squeals and cuddles we were on our way to Bondi Beach. Lisa and Mark were very kind to let us use their home as our home during our stay and a nice ... read more

Aloha! Next stop was Hawaii and the island of Oahu. We had planned on spending our three weeks island hopping-but due to not really planning things this was out of the question as the only means of travel is flying to the islands and last minute flights are super expensive. We got some sound travel advice on the island from a friend from home and found their was plenty to do for our three weeks. We headed to the north shore first which was surprisingly more difficult than we thought it would be -apparently everyone hires cars when they come to Oahu, which meant we had to find a taxi that would take us to the top of the island which involved lots of phone calls at the airport (this north shore seemed like it was ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Francisco November 23rd 2013

After the corruption of Las Vegas, albeit enjoyed corruption, San Francisco was a welcome change of pace. We'd rented a 2 bedroom apartment, plenty of space for all 3 of us, using Airbnb in the suburb of Inner Sunset. It was everything you expect from a San Francisco suburb, steep hills, trendy deli's, cool apartments and trams. An ideal base to plan our time in San Fran, recharge our batteries and just 'hang out'. We arrived early evening so the first nights agenda was a Chinese takeaway and a movie. The food even came in those paper boxes you see on TV, god bless America! Twenty to thirty minutes maximum we could be at most of the major attractions, the public transport system in the city is very good, cheap and easy to get to grips ... read more

After some pretty scary looks and intimidating questions at American immigration (having traveled though south and Central America suggested we could potentially be international drug smugglers apparently) we were in the U S of A, Los Angeles to be exact. Our first stop was to see Craig's pal James and his wife Elaine who live in Anaheim. If you didn't know, Anaheim is also where Mickey Mouse and his friends also live and we were heading there for a day courtesy of James free guest passes (thanks again James) so coming into Anaheim was exciting on two levels, one to see Craig's friends and also to get swept up in Disney fever as this is the stop to where you then go on to the magical kingdom. As you can imagine it was very very exciting. ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán November 10th 2013

After a short boat trip from the Cayes we landed on Mexican ground - once on land we went through a very strict border control with lots of scary looking policeman, which luckily for us did not result in a cavity search. Onto a bus and 6 hours later we were in Tulum. We had run out of time in Central America and we had only left ourselves a week for the Yucatan area. We see Mexico as a place which is quite accessible to the UK and hope to return one day to spend some time in the country. For the short time we had we thought that Tulum was a good choice as there is lots to do and see. Having been lucky enough to have already been to Tulum a few years ago ... read more

It took a total of 4 hours to get to Belize City, there you catch a taxi boat to the island from one of the various companies who are all willing to match any price you been given by a competitor. The border crossing from Guatemala to Belize was quick and easy, the shuttle bus dropped us off only to meet you on the other side. The minibus was full and hot! Glad we brought that water with us! You pass various islands on the way to Caye Caulker and you get that similar feeling to when you get picked up from the airport by your tour operator with many other holiday goers, hoping that the 5 star hotel you just pulled into is the one you booked on superskintbudgetholdidays.com. But I was glad to see ... read more

We travelled over the border by foot with a small shuttle bus and if you blinked you missed the immigration stamp office. Our first stop was Antigua. Picture another colonial town with one to two story brightly coloured buildings, cobbled streets all in a valley surrounded by volcanos-lovely. Antigua was to be our base to do things around Guatamala so we only stayed for one night then the next day headed to Lake Attitlan which is around 4 hours north of Antigua. To get there meant navigating some treacherous mountains and sharp hairpin bends as well as large fallen rocks on the road and chunks of road missing which had slide down the hill. Hair raising to say the least-but we made it to a major town and it's shores to catch the small fishing boat. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » El Salvador October 14th 2013

We crossed at Goascoran and it was uneventful. The bus dropped us off at the bus station in San Miguel, it was very busy and seems like an important jump off point for the rest of the country. Just ask anyone and they'll be happy to show you which bus you need to get, just make sure you pronounce the place correctly! We arrived in a little town called Perquin, we wanted to visited this town and surrounding area because of it's involvement in recent history and events during the Salvadorian civil war. This was lasted approximately 12 years (1980 - 1992) and claimed 75,000 lives, according to the UN. This area was a stronghold of the left leaning guerrilla forces. The town itself is small and remote. We turned up without booking any accommodation and ... read more
