Following a border crossing, and two 8 hour buses we made it to San Pedro, which is the second biggest (and most dangerous apparently) city in Hondorous. Honduras has the city with the highest murder rate per capita in the world so we knew we had to be careful and stay safe. We were staying in a hostel down from a super big shopping mall so headed there (walking with a serious purpose to deter any thiefs, crooks or artful dodgers) in the hope of food. We needn't have worried too much about anything happening to us as outside every business shop was a guy with a massive pump action shot gun ready to go at any trouble. Even INSIDE the shopping mall there were lots of security - best to be safe than sorry l ... read more

The border crossing was fairly simple apart from the friendly people trying to help you, when I say help I mean the kind people who want money from you for pointing you in the right direction! Very good entrepreneur skills! My advise if you find yourself in a similar situation is to not make eye contact, smile, and politely say "no gracias", they usually go away. That may sound a little harsh but if you don´t deal with it straight away your usually stuck with a ´friend´for the next 10 - 15 minutes whilst trying to get your passport stamped and pay entrance/exit taxes. A short journey and we were in San Juan Del Sur, a nice enough little town with surf shops on most corners. What made our stay in San Juan was the hostel ... read more

We dont really remember arriving in San Jose having been up for almost 24hours with an hours sleep and lots of waiting around. But my bag had been tampered with leaving Bolivia (surprise) and the taxi driver got very lost driving so it took a futher 2hours to find our hostel. The hostel was more like a homestay and it was very welcoming and like being at home which was just what we needed, we grabbed a few hours sleep and then headed off to explore our surroundings. We were right next to the stadium where the following night Costa (or Coasta) Rica would be playing USA...USA! So the town was already buzzing about this game as the results linked to the World cup. One thing that is very apparent is how Americanised Costa Rica is. ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque August 30th 2013

Expecting to be leaving La Paz on a some sort of elastic band powered bi-plane, we were pleasantly suprised to see a modern jet-engined 50 or so seater. It was only a short and bumpy journey to Rurrenabaque. The views out of the window were breathtaking, snow capped Andes quickly changing to low land jungle as far as the eye can see, a beautiful sea of green. The airport was cool, one concrete runway, one mud runway and a wooden shack for a terminal. The heat hit you as soon as you got off the plane. About 20 minutes on a minibus and we were at our hostel. Rurrenabaque is a small riverside town, a literal gateway to the Bolvian Rainforest, nothing much to report here other than our hostel has a swimming pool and a ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz August 23rd 2013

We needed to come back to La Paz to get our flight to Rurrenbaque (the amazon jungle) a couple of days later (as the plan first was...but as Dad says you always need a plan to foul it up!) but a dreaded toothache changed all of this!. After visiting Fernando the dentist who reminded me just like Dougie Houser l was given some antibiotics to take for 7days 3 times a day- As l was feeling a bit sorry for myself l managed to pursuade Craig that we should have a burger king (it actually didnt take much pursuading) ! whata mistaka to maka!..que 24 hours of being very poorly! whilst trying to keep antibiotics down! We needed to do two things, postpone the jungle and check into a nice hotel with a private bathroom, cable ... read more

It was only a 3 hour bus ride from La Paz to the lake-side town of Copacana. Passing through the Northern neighbourhood of La Paz, El Alto, was an interesting experience. A relatively poor, bustling area of the town. Judging by the time it must have been rush hour. It just felt like a sea of people, stalls and vehicles, all fighting for their space on the dusty streets. We stayed in Copacabana for 2 nights at a really nice hostel, quite big but they made us feel very welcome. They had a constant supply of free fresh fruit which was a nice touch. The town itself was touristy with people on the streets trying to get you into their restuarant, bar etc. We didn´t let that dishearten us as we knew it wasn´t the main ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz August 17th 2013

Disembarking the bus at La Paz was the confusing, crazy experience we had been waiting for whilst travelling. Once in the taxi we felt like we were transported into an episode of mario-cart or wacky races, both of us bumping along on the back seat. We spent the first couple of days in La paz getting our bearings, and mostly getting used to the high altitude! La Paz is at 3,650 metres, which is tres high, and climbing two steps will get you out of breath - did l mention La paz is shaped like a bowl? The skyscrapers are at the bottom with the cheaper, shanty homes climbing up the walls with restuarants, shops etc up and down these roads.... so there are LOTS and LOTS of ups and downs!... To get our bearings we ... read more

With sore muscles we never knew we had, from the horseriding, we jumped into a 4x4 jeep with two ozzies, a cook, and a guide and started our 4 day trip covering the south of Bolivia which on day 4 we end up at Salar de Uyuni. Day 1 The first day was spent mostly in the jeep covering as much distance as possible - we climbed and climbed and looked down the sheer drops of the rugged landscape which was more like dessert than what we imagined from Bolivia- which was rainforest...We all had our first of many "baños naturales" experiences (going to the toilet outside, without ANY cover), and saw lots of llamas, alpacas, deer and birds. We stayed in rooms in a remote village which was up high and met the rest our ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza August 11th 2013

A 36 hour bus ride........... ouch! I started to forget what the outside world was like. We arrived in a place called Jujuy, said ´who who-ey´, a small town in Northern Argentina. It was pretty much non-descript, but we decided to mix it with the locals and ended up eating some really good food there. Very much needed after the bus journey. After a night in Jujuy it was another bus journey, only a 6 hour one this time..... piece of cake. Our eyes were on a new country. It was sad to be leaving Argentina as we´ve seen so much, but we were looking forward to arriving in this new country..... Bolivia! It was early afternoon when we arrived at a little border town called La Quiaca. The first thing I noticed is how hot ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate August 2nd 2013

Another wise decision of buying a plane tickect WELL in advance paid off. Only an hour on the plane to El Calafate from Ushuaia compared to over 24 hours on a bus. The main draw to El Calafate is to the see the Perito Moreno Glacier. However, other things that made it special was the view from the hostel. The hostel was perched on top of a hill with a panoramic view of the lake and snowpeaked mountains. The lovely town also had its very own...´McDaniels´which made us chuckle. With a value meal one could have a pint of beer! what would Ronald say? So we took a day tour to the glacier and en route saw the Argentinian planes, which are very dry lands, and then moved towards the mountains to where the glacier was ... read more
