Well the final day is here, so very sad to be leaving this wonderful country and amazing state, all I can say is watch this space, if I don't manage to achieve living here before I die, my life will not have been complete... Dropped off and said goodbye to our lovely car, dragged our very heavy luggage onto the courtesy bus and off to LAX. Arrived quite early so entertained ourselves with sushi (me) McDonalds (him) and Haagen Daaz (both!!) and sat watching the aircraft arriving at the gates. Uneventful flight to Madrid if a little noisier than the outbound as we were flying Iberia, Spains national carrier and the Spanish generally find it hard to stay quiet for any period of time!! Arrived in Madrid and took the very turbulent flight back home to ... read more

Sadly packed up to leave Palm Springs today, the desert wind was blowing hard and the hundreds of wind turbines on the freeway out of town were whizzing around like crazy. A straight route back down Interstate 10 winding its way down all the way to Los Angeles. L.A. was busy yet again with yet another presidential campaign visit so once again, hotel prices went thru the roof, I cautiously chose a cheaper Travelodge opposite our favourite Westin, near the airport and conveniently next to Dennys Diner! Hotel turned out to be a pleasant surprise, mixed reviews on Trip Advisor (surprise!) but found it very pleasant, nice spacious room with a pool view, super friendly bus driver Tony) who took me to the airport to sort out a quiery with my tickets and if you take ... read more

Loving Palm Springs so much, decided to stay another 3 nights! On Sunday the bikers all left town and everyhing quietened down quite a bit but the place was still busy and had a great feel about it, went to a store which was closing down and selling some amazing Americana, bought as much as we could get away with packing in our luggage and had a good rummage around, ate at a couple more really great restaurants and continued my theme of brightly coloured cocktails before dinner! Spent two relaxing afternoons in the glorious sunshine around the wonderful pool area, topping up the tan and having a well earned rest after the thousands of miles we have driven over the past 3 weeks. Could stay here forever...... read more

Well the time had come to leave "sin city" Vegas had been kind to us and we weren' t leaving out of pocket from the casino. Sad to leave but a huge AIDS convention was in town and the room price were trebled for the next few days. Had planned to go down to San Diego but again prices were high and as we had already been there before, decided to try something new and head for the oasis in the desert - playground of the rich, Palm Springs California. Another fairly unspectacular 4 hour drive apart from a few pretty mountain ranges, temperatures rising to over 100 degrees farenheit we eventually drove into town to find the biggest Biker Festival taking place over the weekend, downtown the roads were closed and many of the hotels ... read more

Starbucks breakfast ....this is getting to be a habit! Had been recommended to visit Red Rock Canyon, just a short drive away, was a lovely clear day so set off ready to enjoy the scenery and take some photos. Entered the Red Rock park area, set off on the scenic drive, along what we realsed was a one way road for 13 miles through the canyons, about 5 minutes into what started as a spectacular drive, the gas warning light came on and we realised the tanks was almost on empty...we couldnt turn around as the road was one direction, we had driven about 3 miles of the 13 mile tour and had no idea how long the gas reserve would last...so with a lot of "colourful language" bickering and blaming each other we drove round ... read more

Another great sleep in super comfy beds! Starbucks breakfast as usual, then jumped in the car and headed downtown to MGV the Machine Gun Vegas gun range! Met at the entrance by some sexy girls clad in black with pistols on their belts, Alex was impressed already! They showed us in, filled out the forms, chekced we werent insane and didnt plan to shoot up the place in a crazy Brit rage! Chose the package of guns we wanted to shoot and then waited for our beeper to go off to get called onto the range! Now I had done some range shooting before in South Africa but not for quite a few years so a little nervous, but way more excited than anything! Got called onto the range, given our eye and ear protectors and ... read more

A great nights sleep when we could eventually close our eyes against the fantastic view of the strip all lit up in its glory! Starbucks breakfast and out to explore and check off some of the things on our list! Now most people will have no idea of what we are talking about now, but Alex and I are big fans od a couple of shows on the History Channel, Pawn Stars and Ricks Restoration, both shows based in Las Vegas, the former set in a Vegas Pawn Shop and the latter in a restoration yard, both shows often get mingled, with the owners/workers requiring each others services, these guys are mini celebs in the US. So off we drove to the Pawn Shop hoping to catch a glimpse of the team, arrived there to find ... read more

Back on the road, out of the desert, climbed into the hills and then down into the valley, a much more interesting drive than yesterday. A couple of hours later we saw the building of Las Vegas rising in the distance! Soooo excited, I love this town! Had already decided on a hotel - New York New York but decided to cruise the "strip" before checking in, to absorb the atmosphere, the place is really busy, lots of conventions going on. Left the car with the Valet guy and checked into our Park Avenue room on the 34th floor overlooking the south end of the Strip, amazing views, fab spacious room with a real top end luxurious fell. Freshened up and went down to explore the notel, OMG, amazing place, the whole notel is like a ... read more

Up early and made it for breakfast! Tried out the waffle machine (Alex, not me!) then back on the road in the direction of Nevada. Long pretty tedious drive through the California central valley, miles of flat agricultural land. Saw a sign for a flea markey in the town of Selma, decided to pull off the highway and take a look, OMG it was a immigration border control officers dream! I mean we kind of felt at home, every single person was speaking Spanish, the stalls were all selling outrageous frilly over the top clothing, favoured by the "chicas" the "hombres" selling their custom low rider cars, it was like a scene out of West Side Story! We were the only fair haired, fair skinned caucasions in the place, made a swift exit... The temperatures started ... read more

Woke to glorious sunshine! Missed breakfast which bizarrely is only served until 9am! So found a local diner and Alex tucked into a short stack of pancakes with maple syrup and bacon while I restrained myself and enjoyed a bowl of home cooked oatmeal and honey and a gallon of coffee. Drove back up into the park and at this stage I apologize that I cannot find enough words to describe this place, even photos can't do it complete justice, it is simply stunning, amazing, breathtaking and awe inspiring, the colours an textures of the cliff faces contrasting against the greens and browns of the foiliage, the sheer majesty of the height of the mountains, wandered through meadows with babbling brooks with deer grazing close by, completely unafraid of humans, every turn in the road brings ... read more
