Today felt like two days in one. The first part was two short flights that felt like eternities for some reason! We flew from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, then from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Some of the information on Stacy's entrance visa was incorrect so it took a wild goose chase to track down a computer to print a new one. We ran all over that blasted airport then finally got some food. I chose a really authentic Asian dish--grilled tuna melt. On the second flight we watched a little Step Up Revolution and dreamed about dancing some sick moves like they do. It took a while for them to review our visas when we landed so we were really nervous about not getting in. Some of Stacy's info was still wrong but ... read more

Another early morning (by my standards), and more American breakfast. We decided on a tour to chiang rai, the white temple and the golden triangle which is where Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), and Laos all border the same river. Our tour guide's name is Rhun and he kind of reminds me of a Thai "Provo Apex" guy. Pink polo, skinny jeans, aviators, spiky hair... Nice guy tho. I can't tell you how many times he squeezed opium into the conversation. We drove for about an hour and stopped at a little natural geyser but, as with most tourist sites, they really stop there because of the market. This market was actually selling some really great, genuine products such as silver platters/jewelry boxes, real gold/gem stones/diamonds. They were higher priced but still a bargain in comparison to US ... read more

I feel like this whole trip I have either been starving or stuffed. Two extremes. We go longer in between meals and don't really snack, then we get huge, yummy, authentic Thai meals and gorge ourselves till we want to puke! I am actually on the starving side as I write this but I can't exactly run out and grab some Del Taco. I brought some BBQ Pop Chips with me in my bag but at some point in one of the airports those disappeared... some security guy better be enjoying them 'cause I sure wont be. I should move on to the part where I start rehashing my day, but I can't move on past food. So. Hungry. Maybe Stacy has another Special K bar. Man I am missing those BBQ chips. Ah ok, moving ... read more

So the Great Siam Adventure began bright and early on Saturday on very little sleep. I'll sleep when I'm dead, right? My nervous mother dropped me off at the SLC airport and I met my friend Stacy to check in. My same, trusty yellow pack-pack felt familiarly heavy and I again cursed myself for over-packing. Someday I will learn. Long story short we travelled for like 30hrs straight and slept here and there on our flights. The longest one, LAX to Taipei, was 13hrs long. Bless my beloved Ambien, I was able to get some shut eye. I would also like to give a shout out to the complimentary slippers we got on the flight—score!! At the Tom Bradley Int'l terminal in Taipei I left my freaking bag at the food court after we devoured a ... read more

Shut the front door. I just got back from Ireland. And Scotland. And England. I don't even know how to sum those two weeks up! I heard a quote one time that travel, like education, is invaluable. The money you spend on either of these things will never cease to benefit you. A car will lose value, a house will lose value, but travel-- travel will always stay with you and the memories will grow richer with time. I have just barely stuck my toe into the waters of exploration, and I am hooked. So many places I want to go! My return home took about 30hours, so I had some time to reflect back on all of the incredible things that happened and say a lot of "thank you" prayers! Now, a few things that ... read more

I woke up this morning and realized that, in hindsight, two weeks had passed in the blink of an eye. My little adventure was almost over. I also realized that I had slept in a bit and had 45mins to get ready, eat, and walk 20mins to the tour departure site. Crap. Made it there just in time and ready for a nap on what was going to be a long bus ride to Limerick and the Cliffs of Moher. The girl that sat next to me, Allie, is traveling abroad in Rome and on a week holiday in Dublin so we became instant friends. There are so many people in Europe that travel by themselves, so making friends that are in simliar positions as you is easy. She even had a lot of the same ... read more

Leaving my castle this morning was indescribably difficult. I thought really hard about grabbing a coat of armor or marble lion statue on my way out as a little souvenir. Today was a looong day tour to Cork and Blarney Castle. We started at 6:50am and drove for an hour, through Leish County and over the Three Sisters rivers before stopping for some breakfast rolls at a little convenience store in Kilkenny. The tour "mascots" are a bunch of donkeys near this store named Jack, Jenny, and Pier. The group fed these little guys all sorts of junk until we set out again for Cork. Dave, our tour guide, probably knows more about Ireland than any other person in this entire world. He talked, and talked, and talked about Irish history the entire 12 hour tour. ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Clontarf October 21st 2012

Oh the rollercoast of emotions that I have had the last little while. After I posted last, I set out on my own to see some of the Dublin sites (St. Patricks cathedral and others), I had about an hour left of sunlight and was coming off of a social-interaction-high from the previous night (having real people to talk to and hang out with) so starting out by myself again was a little depressing. The guys asked me to go out with them again that night but we didn't really have any way of communicating because my phone doesn't work here, so I was pretty sure it wouldn't actually happen. So-on my own again. It's interesting how I hadn't really felt lonely this whole trip until I had a taste of friends again. I began the ... read more

I didn't post on my last night of Orkney because the internet was so terrible, I spend like 2 hours trying to find a hotspot with no luck. Plus, that was kind of a sick day/ it was too cold to actually go see anything. It was pouring icy rain all morning so I just stayed in and drank hot chocolate. When it cleared up -a little- I went to Skara Brae and the Skail House. More historical sites that display neolithic aged discoveries. I tried to stop at Helgi's again for a tuna sweetcorn cheese sandwich, but they'd finished serving lunch, so I went down the street to The Shore and had a veggie burger. Something that has surprised me here in the UK is how many people have graduate degrees but still work as ... read more

I sniffled my way from my Inverness hostel to the bus station and wound up at the airport a whole hour and a half early. Anywhere else, and that would be expected. They always say to arrive 2 hours before your flight, right? Well, when I walked in a little before 8am, I was the only one in the entire airport. No employees in sight, no waiting passengers. If the lights hadn't been on and sounds coming from behind of the counter at the cafe, I would have thought that I was in the wrong building. There was a plane out back-- I probably could have taken myself for a little joy ride! I waited around and asked the first person I saw where I was to check in. Turns out, in a airport you can ... read more
