Europe » Portugal » Lisboa May 31st 2010

So here we are on board the Duomo Queen on the river Duomo, Porto, Portugal at dusk. We are sitting on our little deck looking up and watching all the lights come on lighting up the cathedrals and buildings in the old city. It is very beautiful. There is a mist coming down after a 28 degree day. We arrived here by bus at 4 o’clock this afternoon and unpacked in time for welcome drink and dinner. The staff are lovely and can’t do enough for us. Dinner was 6 courses and beautifully presented. There are still sightseeing trips every day so we will be doing some walking but it won’t be enough to work off the three multi course meals. Haven’t blogged since we got to Lisbon as by the time we arrived two hours ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City May 26th 2010

Arrived in London on Monday afternoon to a heatwave. It looked like London but felt like Queensland - 28 degrees. Lovely to leave the airport and recognise all the signs and know where you are going Buy the time we found our hotel lovely old Georgian building in Glouster Place and settled it was late in the day so we just went out for a walk. Nearly melted, went into Marks and Sparks. So busy queues 10 people long for the fittings rooms. ( For those interested they seem to be having a love affair with linen.) Had a wondwerful day with our old friends Jackie and Paul. They came into London from Bradford on Avon to spend the day with us. We got the open double decker bus ride around London getting on and off ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 23rd 2010

So here I am 7 pm two glasses of red and a plate of Parma ham and I'm left to type the blog. Another full day. Our only whole day to see Venice. We arrived yesterday from Florence at 3 o'clock a little worse for wear as we had been up since 5 o'clock. Arrived in Florence and stowed our bags until the 12.30 train to Venice. Thought I would get some serious shopping in since we were too busy sight seeing and art watching on Thursday. Boy was I disapointed Saturday is a late start day in Florence where nobody gets much going before 11 am. So back to the station to get the Euro Star to Venice. So Grant gets all the bags aboard - (seem to be getting heavier for not much shopping!!) ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre May 19th 2010

So, After we travelled to Cinque Terre from Lucca by train yesterday having to change twice ond only just making our connection at Viareggio due to the train being late to Lucca. Fortunately the sun decided to shine for our walk around fom the 1st village to the second (Manarol) so it was looking its best. We stopped for lunch at Manorola where we had some of the best fish. I had anchovie casserole 5 Terre style and true to form Grant had the mixed fish grill wasted on him as he never sucks the shells. (So I did) seriously the best meal. Back on the path to the next village . The path to the next village is closed due to all the rain they have had and we had to catch the train to ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Lucca May 18th 2010

So today we have ticked off the hire car through the Tuscan Hills adventure! We started off at 9:00am having found Avis just outside the walls. We passed through lots of little villages heading south and also managed to circumnavigate the “Divorcia” village. Some people just have an aversion to any sort of right turn while others just don’t know their right from their left. So Tuscany looks just like the calendar. We ended up by good fortune at a very high fortified walled village called Volterra were we had the best Pizza ever for lunch then on to San Gimignano where we climbed the tower - 218 steps. What a view in 4 directions. Of course I couldn’t resist - I will definitely need more wall space at home. I’ve never seen so many beautiful ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 16th 2010

We rode the open top round and round bus around Rome which gives you a great view looking down on the people. Got off at the Coliseum and Grant did the tour while I found some more cobble lanes to walk (and and a Gelato). Got off at the Pantheon, piazza Novaona , church of Santa Maria, Spanish Steps - check out the video. The Spanish steps are surrounded by up market shops. I saw the most expensive shoes I’ve ever seen - more expensive than Jimmy Choos €900 shoes (NZ$1,700) by some designer I’d never heard of. The Australian lady standing next to me was so besotted she took a photo of them. They were very fine high heeled like leather lace covered in little crystals, (Sorry boys) Everything is just so old, old, OLD! ... read more

Coming home on the #40 bus from the Termini in peak hour traffic was an experience. Today we are doing more Rome sightseeing and then onto Lucca by train on Saturday. ... read more
