Periodically, I am asked by some of you for my "best" trip, meal, experience, drive, train ride, or hotel. So, without making the list too big, here is a snapshot of the best. And best probably means favorite! Best Hotel Rasa Sayang in Penang, Malaysia Casa Palmero at Pebble Beach, CA Old Course Hotel, St. Andrews, Scotland The Peninsula Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand The Datai, Langkawi, Malaysia Best Train Ride The Trans Siberian Railway, Russia Anywhere on the Shinkansen in Japan The California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco The Sunset Limited from LA to Nawlins for the Super Bowl The Coast Starlight from Seattle to San Francisco ... read more

There are several answers to this question. One might be that it is more fun. I can walk around, without that damn seatbelt light coming on. And I can see out of BOTH sides of the train. Mealtime is at an actual table with waiters, something even a premium seat in First or Business Class of an airplane cannot match. The quality of the food is somewhere between coach class and first, however. Two, it is much more relaxing. I can nap whenever I want, with nobody to bother me. I can stretch out on two seats, with several pillows and blankets if needed. I can open or close the shades, adjust the airflow and light, and it is much quieter than an airplane. Three, the people I meet on the train seem much more willing ... read more

Having taken a portion of the Coast Starlight from Seattle to the Bay Area, I decided to try starting in San Diego, and ending in Seattle. I flew down to San Diego to catch the Pacific Surfliner to Los Angeles Union Station. It leaves at the ungodly hour of 6am. But at least I got to spend the better part of a day in San Diego. At Union Station, we board the Coast Starlight at 10:10am. The scheduled time of arrival in Seattle is Thursday evening at 8:12pm at the King Street Amtrak Station. From there, I will spend a night in Seattle, along with most of Friday before heading home on a dinner hour flight back to Fresno. Hardly an express, the Coast Starlight makes 17 stops in California alone, including Santa Barbara, San Luis ... read more

I do not claim to be an expert as far as predicting travel trends. But I do not what I like when I travel. And I also see some trends, both good and bad. One of the worst, and I am as guilty as anyone, is the constant digital connection to the rest of the world. But I do not use roaming, and limit myself to a few phone calls home, and unlimited texts. The experts call this trend, "digital-detox", though I prefer to call it, "just try to enjoy your trip." Of course, going back to nature, getting away from cities, and getting more active physically helps immensely. Hit the "second" cities for a great experience. I can think of several here in the U.S. I enjoyed Memphis much more than Nashville. And Columbus much ... read more

Everyone knows our typical New Year's celebration and ritual. We go out, to dinner or a party, have a few glasses of champagne, and wish each other a Happy New Year as the ball drops at Times Square in NYC. But what about the rest of the world (thanks to Fodor's)? But first, a question: Which country celebrates the New Year first? Answer below** In Spain, they celebrate the Twelve Grapes of Luck. Eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the year for good luck and prosperity. But you must eat one grape at each strike of midnight!. The tradition goes back to 1909, and I would not be averse to washing it down with a glass of bubbly. Wear colorful undies in Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, or anywhere in Latin America. Tradition says red brings ... read more

According to many travel "experts" and writers, these are the new travel trends for 2018. Some of these are familiar, if you follow what I do and where I go. Let's see if there is anything interesting. Solo travel-hello! I think I invented solo travel. Who else would take the Trans Siberian Railway across Russia solo? Multi generational travel-I never traveled much with my Mom, except for local trips. But my kids really enjoyed having grandma along, especially my daughter. Double destinations-again, I hate to tell you, maximize that 10-12 hour trans-ocean flight and see the world. My last trip to eastern Europe covered five countries, and easily could have included more!!! Glamping-though I am not a big fan, I did this on the Serengeti in Tanzania. It was quite comfortable, ... read more

Most of us are so fortunate, either already retired (like us), or working in a good job. But have you ever stopped to think about people in poor countries? Take a look at these: The average income in the world is about $10,300 per year, per person. But can you believe there are many countries where the per capita income is less? Let's see if I have visited any of them (two only). Tanzania has a per capita income of only $900. But it does have domestic and political stability. My visit there was primarily focused on two safaris, one in the Ngorongoro Crater, and the other on the Serengeti. At Ngoro, we stayed in a better than average safari resort, and on the Serengeti, in luxury tent cabins. Though gold is their top export, they ... read more

Most travel websites and email newsletters tell us where we should go. They tell us what destination is hot. In reality, they are just trying to line their pockets, and keep their sponsors (online ads) happy. Frankly, I tire of their relentless and shameless touts. My biggest travel misadventure was going to Machu Picchu. Lots of hype, and not much substance. The train ride to and from was interesting and scenic. And remainder of Peru remains one of our favorite places to visit, Amazonia. But I do admire a website that tells us where NOT to go. Fodor's took the chance, perhaps since they do not receive $$ from these countries, or companies that transport or house us at those destinations. Here is Fodor's commentary: We believe that we’re not only passengers on this trip, but ... read more
