I have been trying to visit the Gila River Indian Community for about the last ten years. My parents were incarcerated at the Gila River Relocation Center, located on an Indian reservation belonging to the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). With Covid, all visits were suspended. I was pleased to hear on October 11, 2022, that I can apply for entry, and visit the grounds with a member of the GRIC. My visit is planned for March 10, 2023, assuming my application for entry is approved. I consider this a very big moment in my life. I have attached some of the paperwork involved in my application. BTW, it was approved on Feb. 7!!! I am so pleased! The Gila River War Relocation Center was located about 50 miles south of Phoenix, and 9 miles west ... read more

Time for warmer and dryer climate, at least for a few days. Having been to Scottsdale, and the state of Arizona so many times, it has become more difficult coming up with a new angle for an email about our trip. So, here is some extraneous information that you may or may not care about: 1. The average temperature in March is 76. Most days are clear and sunny. Perfect for baseball or golf. It rapidly jumps up to 85 in April. 2. There is a cactus league (Spring Training) game held every day in March, somewhere in the Valley of the Sun. 3. It is just a few hours drive from either Sedona or Scottsdale to see the magnificent, Grand Canyon. 4. The Sonoran Desert, one of the lushest in the world, is blooming with ... read more

Have you ever been somewhere, and wish you had not? It has happened to me a few times. I have also avoided some places at the last minute, like the Ukraine. The Impulse Traveler listed ten places to never go back. "Never Go Back" was a movie with Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Here is their list, though I agree and do not agree on a few places. Rio de Janeiro Yes, they have a plethora of favelas, but the other parts of Rio are amazing, fun, interesting, and very different. The food is great, the beaches are astounding, the bikinis are tiny, and the people are friendly. I would go back anytime! Paris I would heartily agree back in the 70s and 80s, but it has ... read more

So, I have been under the weather lately, so not much news or email updates. Here are some pearls of whatever you want. “We should try to be the parents of our future rather than the offspring of our past.” — Miguel de Unamuno Pinot Noir is the most commonly mispronounced wine name. Apparently, an average of 2,380 people search for how to correctly say the world-famous French wine each month. (It's PEE-noh nwar, in case you were wondering). Expedia shows the ideal day to book a flight is Sunday. For domestic flights, you can get the best airfare by booking at the end of the weekend. Doing so can save you around 5%. For international flights, the savings are nearly 10%. Barium nitrate is insoluble in 6M Nitric Acid. (I remember that from freshma... read more

From Explored Plant (Sara Horton), some pretty good hacks and hints for your pre-flight enlightenment. Take a photo of your parking location-Back when I drove to the airport often, I always parked in the same spot, always. I could find my car in my sleep. But I tend to have problems finding my rental car, often forgetting either the color, make or location!!! Contacts vs glasses-Long flights are difficult for contact lens wearers, particularly if you are able to sleep. Though I no longer wear glasses or contacts, I carry some artificial tears just in case. A refillable water bottle-This is one hint I rarely follow. Why? I tend to lose nice bottles. And they usually weigh more than a disposable plastic bottle. To each his own, I say. But it will save money! Always know-Certain ... read more

February 14th must be more than cards, flowers, and candy. And who is St. Valentine, and what is the Valentine's Day massacre? Though it sounds a little like my pal Andy Rooney, it might be interesting to find out why this day is what it is. It is celebrated in a big way in Southeast Asia, as we found out firsthand. Most restaurants are decorated, stores are full of special gifts, and people seem to step a little lighter on this day. Valentine's Day was named after two early Christian martyrs, both named Valentine. It was Geoffrey Chaucer who began to associate it with love, romance, and courting. Since the 19th cent... read more

This map makes me feel like I am a real traveler, and that the world is so small. Yet, I have places to go and people to see. And I need to revisit a few, like Helsinki, Reykjavik, and Budapest. My trip in May might be my last to Europe (I keep saying this). I need to refocus on SE Asia, Japan, and South America. Along with a return to Athens to see my Greek brothers, I may also head north to Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, or south to Crete, then up to Slovenia, and the capital city of Ljubljana. After that, maybe Estonia, Slovakia, or Albania. Or maybe all three? I also want to see some of my European friends again, in France, as well as Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, and England. And don't forget Barry ... read more

(From Road Trips for Families) A Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa allowing its holder to circulate in the Schengen area, which covers 26 countries without border controls between them. These countries are: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. When you get a Schengen visa, you get a short-stay visa to 26 European countries. (I have been to countries in italics). Everyone seems to have a bucket list, including Sherman's Travel. Of course, their motives are to get you to buy their travel packages. I have no motive, other than to tell you what I think about them. And I prefer to use the term. "Water Pail List" instead!!! Oahu North Shore-truly spectacular, biggest waves I have ever seen. While you are there, hit Giovanni's Shrimp Truc or Matsumoto Shave Ice. We also enjoy I Am Paradise (pearls and jewelry). Kentucky Derby-you must attend at least once, truly spectacular, often called the "most exciting two minutes in sports." Make sure you bring your best hat, visit the bourbon houses in downtown Louisville, and get to the track early on Derby Day.
