Hi All, A fantastic ride down the California coast. A really good workout with all of the ups and downs and some wild hairpin turns. I did run into a couple of days of fog which spoiled the sight seeing but it was still great and the ride over the golden gate bridge was definitely memorable, but holly cow riding down the hills in San Fran were absolutely frightening. I was afraid a brake cable would snap or the brakes would melt!!! Luckily I didn't have to (try to) ride up any of those hills. I've been doing some sight seeing around San Francisco and today I took a tour out to Alcatraz Island. I'm getting antsy though and I can't wait to get back on the bike. Sunday I fly on Qantas Airlines to Adelaide ... read more

Hi Folks! I'm in Eureka California taking a rest day. Had a nice week long stay with my daughter and spent a lot of time planning and making arrangements for the next phase of the trip. I have a reservation to fly to Adelaide Austarlia on the 12th! It's been a beautiful ride down the coast so far! The Oregon coast is breathtaking and the California redwoods are awesome! Oregon has been about the best for camping so far with Hiker/Biker sites in the national parks at $4.00 a night with free hot showers and some of the parks having laundry facilities. I met another rider from Australia who's also on his way to San Francisco so we're riding together. I've uploaded more pictures to my Kodak Gallery, but I haven't had time to arrange them ... read more

Hi All, It’s been awhile since my last post and I have covered some miles. From my last post, I bicycled up Vancouver Island to Port McNeill, (I originally planned on Port Hardy, but I ran out of daylight so Port McNeill it was!), to go sea kayaking and hopefully see Orca. Johnstone Straight is a popular area for whale watching as there’s a resident population as well as transient pods of Orca that travel the Straight regularly. Beautiful views of the coast range mountains on the ride up, but I rarely got more than a glimpse as most of the time it was foggy, overcast, and drizzly as is the norm for the north Island. In Port McNeill I called a kayak touring company in Port Hardy, but they didn’t have any day tours and ... read more

Hello All, I made it! I cycled off the ferry and onto Vancouver Island at Nanaimo on August 31st. Some incredible country getting to Vancouver and of course a beautiful city, but need I say I didn't spend any time there. Headed for Marine Drive and on to Horseshoe Bay to get the ferry to Nanaimo. Fantastic, salt air, mountains and the sea!!!! I stayed at a Hostel in Nanaimo and took a rest day to walk around and do some bike maintenance. Presently I'm heading north up to Port Hardy. For tonight, I'm staying in the Riding Fool Hostel in Cumberland, a really cool Hostel. OK, take care all!!!!!! ... read more

Hello Folks, Sorry it's been a while, but somehow things always seem to conspire against me getting internet access. Anyway, I'm solo again. Chrostoph and Iris wanted to spend more time hiking around Waterton, I wanted to get to the coast, also Christoph had a cracked rim and was waiting for a replacement. The Rockies have been incredible, beautiful scenery, long long climbs (20K to 25K) @ 6% to 8% grades, and mixed weather. Of course my 1st pass was the highest, Kootenay pass out of Creston, at 1774M. And naturally full on conditions; started to rain about 5K into the climb, hail for a bit and then lightening and thunder as the grade kicked up to 8% at about the 20K point. At the summit it was snow mixed with rain and wind. A very ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Lethbridge August 13th 2008

Hi All, It was time for some time off the bike, so Christoph and Iris and myself rented a car here in Lethbridge and headed north into the Canadian Rockies. Stopped at Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump park to view a cliff edge in the foothills where for 6 thousand years aboriginal peoples have stampeded buffalo herds over a cliff to provide their winter food supply. From there, we drove to Jasper and then to Banff. Beautiful country with lots of wildlife; bear, coyotes, mountain sheep, elk, marmots and badgers. A few short hikes including a hike up the Athabaska glacier to get a view of the Columbia ice field. Unfortunately we didn't get the best views as we had low clouds and rain all but the last day. After a week sealed in climate controled ... read more

North America » Canada » Saskatchewan » Eastend August 2nd 2008

Hi Folks, We're presently at the municipal campground in Shaunavon Saskatchewan for a day off. The prairie is incredible.....fantastic vistas that seem to go on for ever. Lots of hawks, prairie dogs, a few deer and we finally saw Antelope. The past couple of days have been hard riding with temps between 27 and 32C and south/south west winds. We also had a 13km section of road construction with dirt and clouds of dust whenever a car or truck went by. Tomorrow we'll be heading to Eastend Sas and then on to Cypress Hills Provincial park. I managed to upload a few photos to my Kodak Gallery site, (no particular order!), so you should be able to log in and view. I'll continue to try to get more uploaded. That's it for now, trust all is ... read more

Hi All, The weather has finally cleared, a week without rain!!! I'm still biking with the German couple, Christoph and Iris. We're presently in Estavon Saskatchewan. We've been fairly lucky with the infamous prairie winds, a few days with North/North West winds, but then we get a break and get a few days with South/South East winds. Also as 3 we get to trade off leads. In western Ontario we took a short cut around Lake of the Woods and dropped into Minesota for a day to get to Manitoba. Manitoba was a treat with no shoulders on the roads, but the southern route luckily didn't have too much traffic. 5000 Km's so far and the bike is doing well, so far I've just had to replace the chain. Christoph had trouble with his trailor, a ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Thunder Bay July 11th 2008

Hi Folks, Taking a rest day in Thunder Bay. I've been riding for several days now with a couple from Frankfurt Germany. They rode from Frankfurt to Amsterdam and then took a container ship to Montreal! We're currently staying in a Hostel (reminds me of my college days) in Thunder Bay. He's pulling a trailer and they are definitley going for comfort including having a lap top with them! They took a 1 year leave of absence from work and are planning on heading to Asia when they get to Vancouver. Tomorrow I'll be heading west and a visit to Kankabeka Falls and they're thinking of swinging into the US for a few days. The cold and rain continues and as a result the black flies are relentless!!! Yesterday we stopped in Eagle Canyon to hike ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Sault Ste Marie July 2nd 2008

Hi Folks, I'm in Saul St. Marie Ontario. I actually had 2 days in a row with no rain, of course it's pouring as I type this!!! Wind has been kicking in but no serious climbing yet, the terrain is mostly flat to rolling hills. The ride along the north channel of Lake Huron has been beautiful and everyone keeps telling me the North Shore of Lake Superior is even better. I've got 3200 Km's in now, so I stopped at a bike shop here, Velorution, to get my pedals lubed and tighten the rear cog set, (I noticed some looseness). No charge for any of the work!!! They also offer free camping to tourists, (wish I had known that last night!!!). I've seen quite a few tourists, including 2 guys riding recumbents, heading east, but ... read more
