Today was very interesting. Jeanne was having a take care of yourself before the big event day. The day started with her getting a Vit B infusion. Then she went for a massage while I visited the Safeway store. Finally she went for a whole body Cryotherapy session. I had never heard about it before, but think I am going to try it before I leave. The person getting the treatment puts on a robe, warm glove, knee socks and rubber slip on shoes. Then the doctor cools down this tall cylinder and you get in. The door is closed and an elevator lifts you until only your head sticks out the Top. You throw out your robe and for between a minute and a half and three minutes you turn in quarter turns every fifteen ... read more

i have arrived, yippee! Great flights on Hawaiian Airlines. I must have been booked on a newer plane, seating very different from last time. Felt like I was in a science fiction transport. From the rear, the seats looked like the back of some amusement park ride. Three rows across, three deep, with two seats in each curved seat. Picture looking at nine sets of white ultramodern curved walls, only they are only four feet high. As you come around to the front, there are two seats to your left facing a grey plastic magazine and safety card rack at the top, with storage below. The seats are leather and modern and the leg rest is to the left or right of the seat and approximately two feet away. Does not sound very comfortable, does it, ... read more

Good morning everyone from SEATAC airport in Seattle. Plane takes off in an hour and a half. I am psyched. I love going first class, especially on Hawaiian Airlines. Had my own line for checking in and it took all of ten minutes. Then I got to go in the premier security line and there were all of eight people ahead of me. There is a big lounge in the Hawaiian hub with comfy chairs, Internet and charging stations and it is open to everyone. Most people do not seem to even see it right in front of them, theyprefer to sit in those crowded seats instead of stretching out. There is a guy sleeping on a sofa right behind me. Wonder if he is going to miss his plain, only thing he has done in ... read more

Hi everyone from Gerri's house in MD. Heading back to Jeanne's in less than a week. First time back on the Big Island in a few years. Just wanted to let you all know I will be blogging again. In the meantime, I am enjoying time with Gerri, Jim, Andy and Rebecca Andy will be a senior next year, Rebecca graduates from middle school in June. Weather here has been strange since I arrived. Do not think global warming is the problem, I seem to have attracted an ongoing cold front. Later all.... read more

Well, everyone who was going home should be there by now. Can not believe it is over. It was truly a marvelous trip and there is still so much of Sicily I would love to see. Thought I would kind of give a fun ending to this blog by relating some fun stuff. First of all, I promised Luca I would correct a couple of spellings from an early blog. Luca, if there were more errors, feel free to correct me. I only wrote what I remembered and that can sometimes be way off. The town we saw from the outlook or belvedere in Sicily was Castellammare. The hot ricotta cream pastry was Cassatelli. When one travels in a foreign country, there are always interesting things. First let me introduce you to my fellow travelers, but ... read more

11 May - Last day in Sicily. today we went to Linguaglossa, a quaint alpine town situated on the northern slope of Mt Etna. The top of Mt Etna was pretty hazy today, so no one got a clear picture as we got closer. Yesterday when we went to Taormina we could see some venting going on, but today we could see nothing. Glad I bought a postcard yesterday. Mt Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe and the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. Last time it erupted was in 2002 and lava flowed for 20 days and only went 13 kilometers. The flow wiped out 2 ski runs, 3 restaurants and 3 cafe bars. Not a single person was killed. Salvatore, our guide, told us a man could out walk the ... read more

May 10 - Second last day. Started off the day with a tour of Catania, a vibrant city perched on the edge of the Ionian Sea. Founded in the 8th century BC, Catania was once among Italy's most important cultural centers, particularly in the Baroque period. First stop was at the local WWII Landing Museum, dedicated to the Allied landing on the southern coast of Italy. Americans landed on the south central coast and the Brits on the southeast coast. Idea was for the Americans to liberate Palermo by fighting northwest across the island while the Brits fought up the coast. The idea was for the Brits to reach Messina first, but even after fighting across over half the island, the Yanks got there first. The guide told us how the Brits and Yanks used to ... read more

Had no internet at last hotel, so you might find several blogs dated today. On the third last day we learned so much that I thought my head was spinning. We went to Siracusa (Syracuse), birthplace of the famed Mathematician Archimedes, the guy who supposedly yelled "Eureka" when he discovered that objects displace as much water as they weigh, as he was running down the streets naked. Oh well, sounds good, but probably no truth in the naked part. Anyway, he was way ahead of his time in so many educational matters. There is a sculpture standing in between two bridges supposedly of him, since no one knows what he looked like. He is holding a compass in one and and a "burning" mirror in the other. Story is that when Roman ships tried to attack, ... read more

Guess some of you were wondering about the xxxxxx's in yesterday's blog. Could not remember the name of the huge, ornately decorated silver vessel that supposedly held some of the bones of St. George. The word I tried was not recognized by this program, so asked Luca and we finally just decided on a really big, heavy silver thing holding bones. Now the strange thing is, there is no proof that these bone fragments actually belonged to St. George. Seems the Catholic Church sometimes played pretty fast and free with the bone pieces they were selling as belonging to whatever Saint they claimed it was. Seems to be more than enough bones among all the churches to make several men. Today we went to Castelluccio to witness a day in the life of a Sicilian dairy ... read more

Day 10 - Thought I might tell you about the hotel here in Ragusa. The bottom floor was originally a stable and wine and storage area. Now it holds reception, a lounge and two suites. The lobby floor is limestone with oil so it looks like marble. The rest of the rooms are staggered in what seems to be a hodge-podge arrangement with one suite plus a breakfast room and banquet room on the first floor, three suites on the second floor and three more rooms five steps up and opposite two of the suites. All this is done without an elevator and with wide deep stairs. Get a lot of exercise just walking to my room. Oh, did I forget to tell you that Mary Ann, I, and Luca have the uppermost rooms? Ragusa is ... read more
