Geo: -33.9258, 18.4232For all intents and purposes we have been on the road and almost entirely camping for 26 days since the beginning of our March 16 safari. Since then we have covered approximately 8000 km of African roads and skies. What we have seen has been beyond our wildest dreams – wildlife, vegetation, landscapes, skies, weather and human behaviour. How can I describe my gratitude for these past 20 days of this overland trip – well, really the entire 8 months - of safe travel, fantastic weather (about 6 days of rain in total since August), healthy body, good food and drink and sustained friendly interaction with fellow travellers? Fabulous. We have been so lucky! But…I am growing weary of our daily ritual of packing up our tent and bags, climbing into a vehicle and driving ... read more

Geo: -22.6833, 14.5333Before I describe the journey to Swakopmund, please indulge me while I tell you about one of THE best experiences of the entire trip and maybe my life. For those who have seen my Facebook posts or who I have emailed about this already, it is old news. I have always wanted to do this and I finally did – I skydived!! I went up in a Cessna with no side door, joined by another jumper from our G Adventure group, as well as a photographer for him and an instructor for each of us with whom we jumped tandem. Flying for about 20 minutes to get to an altitude of 10,000 feet, I wiggled up to the open door with Alfred attached to me (thankfully, because he had the parachute) and with no ... read more

Geo: -20.5325, 16.9574Radiant. Infinite. Vast. And as Van Morrison says: Let go into the mystery Let yourself go You've got to open up your heart That's all I know.We have never seen stars like this!We are in Waterberg Plateau National Park, a brick-red sandstone table mountain range that seems to go on forever and is surrounded by Nambian savannah. After driving north from Windhoek, we arrived here to an almost empty park. Our group ventured a steep climb up to the plateau before settling in to dinner and star-gazing.Our star-gazing continued throughout Namibia. Each night, because of the amazingly clear weather we encountered, we were able to watch the stars from our sleeping bags as they sparkled into our tent. I would often awaken at night and instead of just turning over, I'd catch a few moments ... read more

Geo: -19.0933, 22.4451The next few entries in our blog will be about our G Adventure overland trip. This one, the first of three or four entries, sees us travel by air from Arusha, Tanzania through Kigali and Johannesburg to Livingstone where Victoria Falls sits on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. After a day in Livingstone, we continued our 21-day-trip-in-a-truck and journeyed to Chobe National Park, the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert in Botswana. In order to reduce the cost of our flight from Arusha to Livingstone, which should have been about a 3 hour flight, we flew for 18 hours through the night including two 5-hour stopovers. Upon arrival, we were as exhausted as our new travel-mates who had come from other continents! Our tour began with a preliminary gathering, meeting our fearless leader Wendy ... read more

Geo: -1.95325, 30.0587We will be behind on our blog for awhile. Sorry, our faithful readers! You will just have to be patient. We volunteered for 2 weeks in Arusha,Tanzania then went on a 6-day safari to Tanangire, Ngorogoro, Serengeti and Manyara National Parks. We are now heading to Livingstone, Zambia for a 21-day G Adventure overland tour and will have little Internet access. As you know, Jim spends many hours choosing and processing his photos and hasn't had much time lately to get that done. He took about 3000 photos on the safari so selecting his best ones will be a feat in itself. We will try to get our volunteering and safari blogs out but no promises; it may take up to 3 weeks.Travel continues to treat us well and we are having fun in Africa!... read more

Geo: -2.4492, 34.5932I am touched by this beautiful world and our exploration of it this past 7 months. As our friend expressed in one of our blogs, the universe is treating us with kindness. We had reports of other people who went on safari and whose experience was marred by the behaviour of one of their group members and/or the group dynamics. We were so lucky with our safari-mates: Jim, myself, Jackie and Irina - a compatible group who collectively valued sustained time observing and photographing wildlife and scenery.Day 1Those first glimpses of wildlife are indescribable! From the odd looking lizard-like ‘Go-Away' bird to that first sighting of the majestic lion, it just got better and better. We travelled from Arusha to Tanangire National Park, staying in a campground surrounded by a cement wall to keep the ... read more

Geo: -3.36, 36.67Two weeks of 'Hokey Pokey', ‘Head & Shoulders, Knees and Toes', ‘Row Row Row Your Boat' and various other shenanigans with 2.5-6 year olds was plenty for me! Much to my surprise, my 2-week volunteer placement was at the Best Center for the Blind (BCB) working in the mornings at the ‘nursery' (preschool) with the children (with sight) of blind parents and then providing basic health education for the parents in the afternoons. Jim was working with ‘Women in Action', an organization that provides care for men, women and children infected with HIV/AIDS. It also assists widowed women to start up small businesses, many that only generate a few dollars a day, but it's enough to enable their families to survive. He put together a grant application to the United Nations Development Program for ... read more

Geo: -3.36, 36.67Well, with Jim taking so many photographs in Laos (over 2000!) and then needing to process them, we have got behind in our postings. Geo: -5.72941, 39.3043After 18 hours of travel, from Bangkok through Dubai to Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania then a short, small-plane journey to the island of Zanzibar, we were ready to rest. Stone Town is a unique spot, introducing us to African culture with strong Arabic,Indian, and European influences. Needing a short nap, I laid down while Jim went out to explore the town coming across groups of highly athletic children playing soccer, volleyball and doing gymnastics in the late afternoon following school. By the time I was mobile it was dark out but we headed out to find a bank machine and something to eat. We felt nervous walking the busy street with no street lights, many people staring at us, and dust swirling in our faces. Eventually we returned to our hostel having not ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Part of our transition to Africa was a jarring three days spent in and around Khao San Road in Bangkok. This is an area for backpackers with music blaring until 5:00am, crowds of tourists, street vendors selling everything and anything and cheap accommodation and food seven days a week. We did none of the usual tourist activities because we have been to Bangkok twice before and lacked the motivation to see more temples, the palace, take a boat ride, etc. So, Jim took photos. I chose to spend two afternoons in two different meditation retreat centers and wished I had spent the three full days there. There was a huge Buddhist monk conference in the nearby park which offered an endless array of interesting sights.I wasn't even motivated to shop which is usually a ... read more
