Geo: 44.6784, -63.6582Jim and I set out on another long adventure this coming week. We have a one-way ticket booked to Goa, India, an Indian visa and 3 nights booked to get us started. The remainder will unfold as we are inspired. Our focus is to create (writing and photography), to live healthily and warmly and experience new parts of the world yet unexplored by us or not since our 'maiden voyage' in 1984-85.Follow along...if you received this blog posting in your email, it means you are signed up to our blog and will continue to receive alerts of our postings. Geo: 22.5823, -83.746Feeling more grounded in our Cuba-life, we prepared to move from Havana to Vinales, a small town in the Pinar del Rio province. As we waited in anticipation for the taxi we had arranged outside the bus station the day prior, time ticked away and, with allowance for Cuban time, after two hours we assumed the guy was not going to show up. Being peak tourist season, we were fearful we would not get a bus ticket on the day of. With our luggage in tow and me with a crutch, Jim lined up one place at the bus station and was told to go 'over there'. He lined up 'over there' and the lady exclaimed loudly, "no tickets now!". Backing away, he hovered near the ticket booth perplexed about what to do next.Other ... read more

Geo: 23.1168, -82.3886Upon returning to Parque Central the following day, Jim and I were mesmerized for over two hours by the activities and relationships around us:A group of men engaged in an dynamic and heated conversation - one man, hands held behind his back listening intently; another, arms crossed in front not quite agreeing; an ancient man leaning his ear in toward the speaker. The one monopolizing the talking is stabbing the air emphatically making definitive points, words flying in Spanish at a speed that I cannot imagine anyone is able to understand. Perhaps not agreeing, a man is pointing, punctuating his words, his arm reaches to the sky, hand open. Behind him, a fellow conversationalist is flailing his arms above his head; I'm sure they are doing a dance about politics or baseball. Two little ones, ... read more

Geo: 23.1168, -82.3886Havana is one worn down yet equally vibrant city! It has a magic that immediately soaks into your pores. And what a contrast from the paradise beach-bubble of all-inclusive resort life of Varadero to the bustling city with exhaust fumes to rival the streets of New Delhi. Although there are far fewer - and far more unique - cars on the road than in Canadian cities, they are making a lot noise and emitting lung-choking exhaust. Almost no car is newer than the 1980s and many as old as the 1950s - Ladas, Chevies, Peugeots, Oldsmobiles, etc.The bus from Varadero dropped us off at a five-star hotel a few kilometers away from our 'casa particular' (Cuba does not have the infrastructure to accommodate all the tourists so in 2011 the government began allowing people ... read more

Geo: 23.12, -81.36We departed Halifax for our one-month trip to Cuba on a perfect fly day – blue skies, crisp weather. The required three-hour arrival prior to flight seemed ridiculous but not wanting to end up without a seat or something equally as silly, we left with time to spare on our new Nova Scotia Heritage Day holiday. Our good friend CG offered to park our car at her home while we were gone and drove us to the airport. Sweet! I continue to use a crutch to facilitate mobility; if I have to walk far or stand long, the crutch enables me to take the weight off my osteoarthritic knees which have experienced a flare-up. Although I debated at great length whether to use my hiking poles or bring a crutch, the crutch won out ... read more
