Trying to do some catching up. To start with: Here were some photos from the visit to the Cliffs of Moher, which we saw walking both ways, many steps ups and downs., and then actually saw from the water on a rock and rollling boat. David was so brave! It was worth it. Waves were only 2 meters. Tomorrow they were to be 5 meters. Then we drove thru the Burren, a fascinatingly stark and barren area. Our hosts were lovely people. Then we drove all the way from the Galway area to Dublin for one ;final evening near the airport. the next photos are our visit to Trim Castle, the largest and most impt of the Norman castle/fortresses, and neolithic Bru na Boinne. Fascinating. We crashed - long days all, and we are to be ... read more

Europe May 9th 2018

Started out in the rain, passing by Clocmacnoise as we had already visited Glendalough. And it was still raining as we headed East towards Dublin. We didn't start early either, having a relaxed morning with our lovely hosts. We arrived at Trim Castle, the grandest and most impt of the Norman Castles in the Boyne Valley and had great guided tour. then we went over hill and dale to find Bru na Boinne, a burial/worship site older than the pyramids at Giza. Very interesting. Then it was time to find our hotel, not far from the airport in Dublin. Incredibly huge resort hotel. Great beds and room but we only got 4 hours sleep. Early morning, and very tough time finding the restaurant for dinner. Oh well... read more

What an amazing day. We left Castlemaine and drove about 2 hours to the west coast, stopping in Ennis for coffee and a chance to buy an Aran wool pattern. By then the weather was windy, cool, and gorgeous. The Cliffs are over 350 tall here, quite sheer. Saw guillemots by the thousands but no puffins :( Then, after walking FOREVER along the cliff tops, many ups and downs, we drove into Doolin and caught the boat. David had time to down a dramamine, and that worked great. Only 2 meter waves today. 5 m waves due tomorrow! then it was quite a long drive thru the Burren, truly weird geography of rock cut into squares and shapes by the elements. Barren indeed, althought we drove along the coast much of the wa, and that was ... read more

What a great Full Irish Breakfast cook David is. We drove a tiny road up and over the hills behind us to Camp, on the n. side of the narrow peninsula. Lovely views and SHEEP all over. We meant to take the Conor pass but accidently took another and brought ourselves to the south side at Inch again. Oh well. Saw the pub where Antarctic explorer lived and worked. That was the best weather of the day - as you can see when we are "in the clouds" the rest of the day. NOT RAIN = let's be clear about that. stopped at stone aged "beehive huts" - went in 2. One had a "subterrain" passage to the outside. Very well fortified. PreChristian. We did see some referenced landmarks, but never saw the Great Blasket island, ... read more

We've not been online for a few days - explaining later. But back on the 6th we awoke from wonderful sleeps to have David cook our full Irish breakfasts from the supplies that Joanna had laid up for us - FRESH eggs from her chickens even. Headed out to Cobh to learn about the Titanic. As we had learned this was a "bank holiday" weekend, we expected crowds, but now we see an enormous LINER!!!! in the port. Evidently this tiny town of Cobh has one of the best deep harbors in the world. We had to park WAY way up the hill (only about 3 blocks walk but all hill) near St. Colman's Cathedral (we are going to have our own little Sunday service tonight, as we couldn't decide on any church - some with ... read more

Is anyone reading these? If not, it will still help us remember our amazing visit to Ireland. We had our first "Irish" breakfast at this nice B&B - little medallions of black pudding and white pudding, (Canadian) bacon, sunny side up egg, grilled tomato. Could have had porridge, cereals, fruits, etc etc etc. Then off to the Waterford Crystal factory tour. It was fascinating to see the craftsmen and hear about the process. No temptations to buy! Then off to New Ross to meet Mary Jo Mohlmasters second cousin (we think), Mike Quinn, and his 14 yr old son Josh. We sat for an hour to have tea/scones, wishing it could have been longer but the tour started after that hour. What a nice man -- we think niceness must be in the genes. We continue ... read more

Another early start and long day of adventures. We checked out of the place in Dublin, and were delighted that the GPS could work. We were NOT delighted with the terrible traffic - and we had hoped to go easily south from the city. Oh well. We went the "fast" way to Powerscourt Garcens and they were gorgeous, AND the temperatures rose to about 70 and such sun that I have a red neck now! Rhodies were out, and black tulips. This used to be a huge home with estate, but the house suffered fatal fire in the 90s. Then we headed over to the highest waterfalls in Ireland (lovely but not very tall) and then over the river and thru the woods to Glendalough, a monastic settlement of great import. Lovely walk. We didn't really ... read more

Wow, what a long day - we got a great night sleep and awoke bright and early with the sun coming in. Up and out and walked into the city, maybe 20 mins, via St Stephens Green, which was an interesting historic site for the "Easter Rising" of 1922. We had see a documentary about the Rising so it made more sense to walk around the city sites. We found Trinity College and had a really wonderful tour from a PhD candidate in philosophy from Ely, UK. David and he had much to chat about (school sports teams, strange robes needing to be worn for special dinners and exams, etc). Then the library and Book of Kells. We saw a small Celtic Harp that was hundreds of years old. Evidently English suppression of Irish nationalism tried ... read more

Wow . My eyeballs are threatening to close, but wanted to say we finally made it. Not much sleep at all on the flight overnight, but what can you expect. Breakfast on British Air hit a new low, however, with a prewrapped cold "pretzel bagel" with a slight smear of cream cheese. Oh dear. Anyway, we arrive in Dublin to rain around 3, found our rental car. And grateful that it stopped raining for we took at least 20 mins to figure out how to get the luggage into it. Not much boot space. To have gone for a larger car would have been so much more. John & Robin are having 2 small carry ons as arm rests in between them. David drove very very well on the "wrong side" with the manual shift with ... read more

We drove from Kent to Niagara Falls after lunch today and met up with John & Robin Legan here at the hotel at 6 pm. We will do some exploring tomorrow before arriving at the Airport in Toronto for a 6:30pm-ish flight. This is our practice post, showing some photos of the Falls at night with a FULL moon. The camera just can't do justice to the beauty.... read more
