Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796Today we visited the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This is a small sanctuary which protects the Magombe Swamp. It is a great example of conservation and tourism and it also directly benefits the local community. All the money raised from the trail is used in community projects in Bigodi. It has already funded a library and a secondary school in the village. The extremely well-informed guides make the walk all the more enjoyable. Our guide, Alex, could spot birds we might have otherwise missed as well as small creatures like frogs, snails and centipedes and a good sized lizard with a yellow body and brilliant blue head and tail. We saw a lot of birds, for which this area is most famous. We saw Great Blue Turacos, Greenbuls, Weavers that look a bit like Grosbeaks ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796We are taking a day of leisure today to figure out the plan for the next few days and get some medical attention for Richard. He has had a cold, cough for too long now and it doesn't seem to be getting much better. After a long breakfast chatting with the owner of the Guest House, Inica, we headed into town which is a nice walk and the weather is perfect. Not too hot and not too cold. We first went to the Alpine Clinic to get Richard taken care of – antibiotics and antihistamine then went to Kabarole Tours to work out plans for the next few days. We have 5 days planned now so we are set until we get to Queen Elizabeth National Park. There is a lot to do as ... read more

Geo: 0.664314, 30.2796Up early again and headed to catch the bus to Kampala and then on to Fort Portal. We had debated taking the bus on hard surfaced roads versus a shorter trip, in kilometers, via matatus but after yesterday on bumpy, dusty roads, we opted for the bus. After about 10 hours we are now in Fort Portal relaxing at the Rwenzori View Guest House –a lovely, quiet, respite from the noise and pollution of the day. Ugandan's love loud music so the bus ride is anything but relaxing. We plan to use this as our base camp for the next 4- 6 days as we explore Kibale National Forest and environs.Dinner at the Guest House was very good and enjoyable. The place is full with travelers from around the world. We chatted with a ... read more

Geo: 2.2456, 31.802Happy New Year! We headed off for a game drive early so we could see as many animals grazing as possible. And we did! We saw hippos when we crossed the Nile for the game drive and later further into the park. We saw Bush Backs, Water Backs, lots and lots of cob, baboons everywhere, lots of warthogs some with babies – so cute!, a monitor lizard, spotted hyena, buffalo, a lion and two cubs and later 2 males lazing in the sun, elephants and giraffe. Some far off, some close but it was all very cool because we were seeing them in their natural habitat.Plenty of birds too. Storks are everywhere. We saw a Bataleur Eagle, Gray Kestral, African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher, African Jacana and Abyssinian Scimitar Bills, Guinea hens – just ... read more

Geo: 1.67444, 31.715After a not great night with loud music and loud people, we managed to snooze through our alarm and were awakened by Moses, our driver, knocking on our door for our 6am pick up to go to Murchison National Park. We packed up fast and headed out. The drive to our first stop, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, was less than 2 hours so we still got there right when the gates were opening. The Rhino Sanctuary was started to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda. They were completely wiped out during what the locals gently refer to as 'the political unrest' of the 70's and 80's. This was an all out civil war with horrendous genocide under Idi Amin. Many people killed the rhinos for food and others just slaughtered them during conflicts. The rhinos at ... read more

Geo: 1.67444, 31.715Up early and to the Central Bus Station where we caught a Link bus to Masindi. This is the beginning of our adventure in the wilds of Uganda. The bus trip was just under 4 hours and once in Masindi we met with the folks at Yebo Tours to plan the next two days in Murchison Falls National Park. We are all set and leave at 6am tomorrow. We stayed at Alinda's Guest House which is a budget accommodation and that is an understatement. More on this later. It wasn't horrible but we are happy it was just for one night!Alinda's Guest House: We had read in the Brandt Guide (V6) that this place was clean - not really; had regular hot water and electricity - no it did not; had fans in room - ... read more

Geo: -14.4113, 31.6098We spent the day walking around Kampala, dodging a couple of downpours. We visited the Kasubi Tombs which is the official resting place of the first four Kings of Uganda. The tour did a great job of explaining the early tribal/clan history of Uganda and its continued importance today. The building that contains the tombs is closed to the public now because it was destroyed by a terrorist fire started by the Sudanese in 2010. Fortunately the tombs are underground so they were not destroyed. A new building is under construction and will be completed by sometime in 2015. At the site there is also a cemetery where family members of these four Kings are buried. From the cemetery you can see views of two other hills in Kampala – there are seven in ... read more

Geo: 0.314269, 32.5729We got to Kampala very early this morning after 30 or so hours of travel including stop-overs. Today was a 'get your bearings day' as we have only 4 days of our total 3 weeks here booked. We learned very quickly that this week between Christmas and New Year is not the time of year to not have bookings made in advance but we have managed to get a tour booked out of Masindi for Murchinson Falls National Park with a camping tour operator out of Masindi – Yebo Tours. They are listed in the Brandt Guide and have a good, informative website so we will see. We will stay in Kampala until Monday (30th) and then travel by local bus to Masindi - about a 4 hour trip on good roads. Kampala, what ... read more

Geo: 28.6358, 77.2244The train trip from Varanasi to Delhi was supposed to be about 12 hours. We were almost 8 hours delayed. We left V 2 hours late and somehow along the way lost a lot more time. No one ever seems to know why.Oh well. We had planned to do a couple things in Delhi but didn't have time to do much other than reorganize/repack; shower and have dinner. It was a bit disappointing. I really wanted to go to the spice market and pick up a few things but I guess buying them at the Mekong Market in Mesa will have to suffice.I am on a layover right now in Frankfurt and then on to Denver and then to Phoenix. Richard is on his way to Laos.... read more
