Geo: 31.0461, 34.8516We left Wadi Rum early and arrived in Aqaba by 9:30am. Checked in, quick shower after a day and night in the desert and off to walk around Aqaba and spent some time on the beach.Aqaba is on the Red Sea directly opposite Eilat in Israel. You could walk across to Israel if you wanted to deal with the border control. Wandering around with Hannah and Sean, two of our group who also chose to stay ashore ( the others went out on a boat) we stopped at a sweets shop and bought baclava called Fish Mouth and another tasty treat made with honey and cheese. We saved the baclava for the beach but ate the other and then bought street food for lunch. Yummy trangles filled with spinach and onion, one with sweet ... read more

Geo: 30.5852, 36.2384Today we headed into the desert for a night in a desert camp. This is a camp styled after a bedoiun camp. We were the only ones there which was nice. After lunch we did a 3 hour ride through the desert in the backs of pick up trucks outfitted with benches on either side of the truck bed. It was super fun going up, over and down the sand dunes. One truck got a flat tire so we had to wait for a replacement vehicle. What do you do in the desert with time on your hands? Make a human pyramid!!On our way again to two natural bridges hewn by nature. It was so like being in Utah and very fun to see the reactions of folks who have never seen anything like ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra January 5th 2016

Geo: 30.1451, 35.3979Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985 and, in 2007, was named one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World. It is not known exactly when Petra was built, but the city began to prosper as the capital of the Nabatean Empire from the 1st Century BC. It was later annexed to the Roman Empire and continued to thrive until earthquakes and changes in trade routes eventually led to the downfall of the city which was ultimately abandoned. By the middle of the 7th century Petra was largely deserted and it was lost to all but local Bedouins from the area. The Nabateans carved these tombs and what is called the Treasury in the beautiful sandstone rock. Entering via the Siq, which is a narrow rock valley, is reminiscent of ... read more

Geo: 30.32, 35.48We stopped at 3 places on our way to Wadi Musa - Mt. Nebo (pronouced nay-bow) which is where Moses spent the last 12 years of his life after the long walk through the desert. There isa church being built at the top which will be a huge draw once it is completed. We then moved on to Madaba where there is an ancient church with an amazing mosaic map on the floor that depicts the 'holy world' as it was hundreds of years ago. I will add more specifics later. The mosaic is no longer complete but there is a very large part of it that shows the Jordon River, Dead Sea, Jerusalem etc. Then to Karak Castle - the largest and late-Islamic castle in Jordan. This is a famous castle from the crusades and ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » North » Amman January 3rd 2016

Geo: 30.5852, 36.2384Met the group last night. A nice mix of folks from everywhere from Tasmania to the U.S. Once again a well traveled group and all fairly young (compared to me:).Jordan is very interesting. A population of around 8 million plus about 5 million Palestinian refugees from the 1948 and 1967 wars and more recently about 2 million Syrian refugees. There is also a large Egyptian population, many have come because they can get jobs here. The refugees are a huge burden on the Jordanian economy although they get funding from the U.S., Israel, Britain and a few other countries. We have a packed itinerary today but return to Amman for one more night before heading south to Petra and then to the Red Sea. Hopefully the weather will improve so we can go snorkeling.Today ... read more

Geo: 30.5852, 36.2384I arrived yesterday along with the bitter cold, wind and rain. I was lucky enough to get my room right away so I pretty much hibernated for the day. I realized I was exhausted so it was nice to have a break.Today, the 2nd, there is a group meeting at 6pm. The day is still cold but not as windy and rain is intermittent. I didn't venture very far but did head over to Rainbow Street which, during the day, is pretty dull. There are lots of restaurants but many only open for dinner. I assume this is because it is low season for tourism so that might play into it as well. The area is supposed to be a beehive of activity...oh, well. I grabbed a falafel sandwich and bought some snacks and ... read more

Geo: 31.0461, 34.8516It's a nasty day. Cold, wet, windy but we headed out early to get in line to The Dome of the Rock. Hours are limited and even in the rain the line was long. We enjoyed watching the Bar Mitzvah processions heading to the Western Wall. Lots of singing and dancing before the solemness of the actual ceremony at the wall. We didn't get in by the 10:30am cut off so we moved on to see the Church of the Holy Sepulcre. This is arguably the most sacred place for Christians. It is the location of Jesus crucifixion, preparation for burial and the cave tomb. Built around all of this is a magnificent church/cathedral that has seperate churches for several Coptic religions and Catholic. After spending some time here we headed back to the line ... read more

Geo: 31.0461, 34.8516I have waited to post about this day because it was quite overwhelming. After breakfast we left the Bedouin camp and headed off to visit the Duhaishe Camp for Palestinian refugees and then onto Bethlehem. The camp was established in 1948/49 to temporarily house Palestinians who fled their homes during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The conflict over returning to their homes is still unresolved so the camp is actually a small city unto itself. This is an extremely complicated situation with apparently no willingness by anyone involved to compromise in any way. Our Palestinian guide was 19 and believes, as his father and grandfather do, that they should be able to return to their exact town/home. I am confused about who controls what but the people living in this camp get aid from the ... read more

Geo: 31.0461, 34.8516This is an amazing historical site. If anyone does not know the main story of Masada read The Dovekeepers or google it. The history of the site goes back to King Herod. This guy knew how to spend money. He built a winter castle on the mountain complete with saunas and bath houses. The main reason it is so well known though is it was the final home of about 700 Jews fleeing the Romans. I was amazed to see how much of the site has been excavated You can easily picture how everything was managed - living quarters, food storage, water cisterns - amazing. Then, the ramp the Romans built to reach the Jews living there...very sad ending to the story. After Masada we went to a bedouin camp. This is a fun, if ... read more

Geo: 31.0461, 34.8516I am on this trip with G Adventures a tour company based in Canada. I found them via a search for small group tours as I wasn't comfortable traveling solo in the middle east.Their are 9 in this group - 5 women and 4 men. Only 2 people knew each other before this trip. All are very well travelled in spite of their ages. All but 2 of us are under 30. They are very nice, positive, curious people. A few of them have done several trips with G and have been very happy with them. This has turned out to be a very god choice for me.... read more
