Isnt Padang..special LOL You're right, gotta love Indo for what it is. As one of the more mature bloggers I found Sumatera Barat an awesome place..and at a certain age what the hell, we dont need to stay in backpackers anymore. You are so right about the wan massage, wan tshirt, wan bintang...bloody bali!! Give me Sumatra anyday
You know, those visa restrictions are mutual. It's not that Russians can freely travel the world. The West suffers from this Cold War hangover too.
Still the situation is slowly changing. Several weeks ago there was mutual visa regime easing with USA. And negotiatons with EU about visa abolition are in progress.
Let's hope that one day there will be no barriers for those who want to see the world.
Where New Zealand gets its name from New Zealand doesn't get its name from Sealand, Denmark, but from the Dutch province of Zeeland. It was so named by Abel Tasman who was Dutch and came from that province. Hence, he named this new island he had discovered, Nieuw Zeeland in Dutch, and in English it became New Zealand.
Smoking for all Haha Gary (I presume not Penny) - sure you could have found some payback for the smoke sharer that didn't require oat bran! Great to read your news.. all good on the Gold Coast!
Alaska cruise Loved your blog. I am hoping to do a smaller cruise next year from Moscow to St. Pete with an extension to Estonia and Finland. Two years ago a friend and I did the Inside Passage in Alaska from Juneau down to Prince William (in Canada). We used the Alaska ferry system and stoppend in Sitka and Petersburg. It cost us about $250 a piece. This was in early July and the ferries were practically empty. We had berths for two overnights ( the price includes that fee). Granted the arrival and departure times are somewhat inconvenient but it is much better than being on a cruise ship with 3 or 4,000 people (in my opinion). There are cafeterias on board the ships with serviceable food. We researched B & B's on line and had good luck everyplace we stayed. Nothing fancy but clean and in good locations ( walkable distance to town) both in Juneau and Petersburg for around $75 per night for two.
We flew from Prince William to Vancouver and spent a few days there. It is a beautiful city with lots to explore. Keep travelin'
Ps I am a travelblogger and write under the name 'gunga'
Thanks for the information! Now I can add St Pete in my trip to Finland and the Baltic countries. I've been to Moscow, but that's all I've seen of Russia.
Cruising can be a good deal if you are selective... We only cruise to places where it is very difficult to get to any other way; the Alaska Inside Passage for one. We will be taking advantage of the prices on a repositioning cruise from Honolulu to Sydney via Lahaina, American Samoa, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, and French Caledonia in September. Hard to see these islands any other way. We were thinking of taking a Baltic Cruise for the same reasons you did...I want to see the Hermatige in St. Petersburg and wanted to avoid the visa hassle. Anyway, I'm enjoying your blogs, having followed you since the beginning.
amazing pictures! but one question to ask... i am not jealous of anyone in the world except for those who travelled more than me. please tell me how you financed your year long trip? i really am jealous... thanks in advance
Cruising It's a great cruise and you are so lucky to get to go back to the cities to really get into the culture. We weren't so lucky, but the part about Stockholm was right on, Gary, and Penny, Tallinn, Estonia was Wen's fave! Have fun exploring more in depth and Penny nailed it, never take a "lift", always do stairs....feel better about eating twice your weight each and every day! Good to hear Gary is open to doing another cruise! The inland passage of Alaska sounds great! The Alaskan cruise we did was one of our first, and one of our most memorable. Life is GOOD...
Maldives Surf Trip Maldives was the "M" place to surf in the 90's, now it seems like everyone is going on surf trips to the Mentawais. I'm getting ready to book a trip to the Maldives on a Surf Charter and hoping to score fun surf like you did! http://bit.ly/_Maldives
Beautiful but... 93 is stunning of course, but I would not go so far as t say it usurps Chapman's Peak Drive! Nowhere near as colorful or geologically interesting for one! By the time you count the whole Cape Peninsula, the 250 or so Miles from Langebaan through to Hermanus, taking in Bloubergstrand, Chapman's, The Twelve Apostles, Cape Point, Kogel Bay etc etc, I don't think it's even close.
What a great title So much to do in so little time. One of the world's great cities! Glad you are squeezing every ounce of pleasure out of it. Plenty of observations are to be made in that city!
Happy travels.
Very glad to hear you got a dose of New York hospitality; I've always thought the rudeness must be coming from other visitors. Living in a city (transplant or native) so jam-packed with people and not learning how to pleasantly co-exist with all forms of humanity is just counterproductive. But I reach the opposite conclusion that you did - I think it's a great place to live but a terrible place to visit (because, as you saw, NYC is so much more than cupcakes and crowds - though boy oh boy do I know a lot about those darn cupcakes). It's the daily beat, the walk down the street, the little nooks and crannies and endless small discoveries you can make as the world converges at an intersection. It's a city that only reveals itself slowly, otherwise it just overwhelms the senses.

Gary and Penny, from the beginning... Again. Round the world for a year in 07 and we've decided it's time once more. So packing up the house, the jobs, selling the cars and up up and away, this time with no return ticket and no fixed itinerary. A smidgin reckless, sure, but what the hell. May as well indulge in a few passions before the last great journey in who knows when.
Stay tuned and please stay in contact, cause whilst we love seeing what the rest of the world has to offer, we also love receiving news from home base.... full info
