Carl K

Well hello there and welcome to my shiny new travel blog! Not only am I a newbie to Travel Blog, but also a newbie to blogging in general, and a newbie to travelling solo too!

So here goes with a bit of background info...

I'm Carl, 26, and from Cambridge, England, here in the UK.

After numerous vacations to the USA... Florida on the promise I'd see "cartoon mice" and New York on the promise I'd see "big apples", what started off as a life-long ambition to see so much more of the land of the free, suddenly on a whim one day became a real opportunity to do so and quickly developed from being another 'regular' vacation, into a mammoth 36 day trip/tour/trek of as many states as I could cram in!

Using a Contiki tour as a starting guide and base, I've added a few bits before and after the tour to extend it to as big as was financially possible!

It's cliché to say that in travelling the world there's often a dream of 'finding yourself', but for me it's actually true.
After having my heart broken into a few more than a million pieces last year by someone I thought I'd be spending the rest of my life with, so little has made sense ever since. In the death of the relationship, more of me died along with it than remained alive, and the past year has been more difficult than I could ever have imagined and would ever be able to articulate here. In being with someone for so long you tend to be unaware of how your own identity is silently and subconsciously merging itself with theirs to become an "us". And so when the shock of being without them for whatever reason comes along, trying to establish your own identity again, for me anyway, has felt daunting, scary and near on impossible.

And so, amongst all of the other wonderful things I hope to achieve on a personal level from this trip, putting the pieces of my heart back together again, and both proving to myself and restoring some self-belief that I can achieve great things on my own, are all some of the main objectives.

Running alongside in being equally as important, are the fantastic friends I hope to meet, the experiences I hope to gain, and the wonderous sights I hope to take in along the way.

I guess life's what you make of it, and for me after much time in the dark, I know it's time to start making it fun again. :o)

So I hope you'll join me and read about my adventures of both inner and outer discovery from my postings here in blog-world! I'll try to update as often as I can. Hopefully as we travel across America in our tour bus, in amongst the sights, adventures, drunken nights out, on-board singalongs and snoozes, there will be time for me to write some musings and details of what's happened and when on my ever faithful laptop. Hopefully by the time I'm home again and my memory begins to fail me on the millions of things I've done, this blog will act as a way of reminding even myself of all that was achieved.

Feel free to comment on everything, and again, I'll do my best to comment back.

London - 19°c Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean in between one nap and another, and remembering to move my watch forward 5 hours, day 36 became day 37. As not really much of a sleeper anywhere other than a comfortable bed and even then sometimes struggling, I thankfully managed to sleep a fair bit on the flight home thanks in large part to the complete exhaustion that’s caught up with me after such an epic trip in so many ways. Mentally, physically, emotionally and psychologically, I’ve been on one of the largest journeys of my entire life both inside and out. And I guess when a person has been affected in so many ways like that, it’s only inevitable that extreme tiredness will occur, and sleep is soon to follow. I’m pretty sure I didn’t make ... read more

New York City to London - 34°c (NY) And so, the final day of my trip has arrived! In many ways it doesn’t seem as though it was 36 days ago that I arrived to start my epic journey across America with time between then and now flying by so quickly. In just as many ways, it does. When I think about the things I’ve seen, the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met and the escapades we’ve shared, 36 days seems more like 136, with far too much action and adventure crammed into such a relatively short space of time for me to believe that it was ‘only’ 36. - My mind plays tricks into fooling me into thinking that it’s not possible to do and see so much in such a short time, and ... read more

New York City - 32°c I woke up shortly after 9am, and after taking my morning doses of cold and flu medication, showering and making myself presentable, Aaron and I headed down to the club lounge for breakfast, with Jen needing a bit more time (and peace!) to get ready, and then joined us shortly afterwards. After breakfast we headed down to the subway at 53rd street & 7th avenue, to pick up the ‘E’ line down to the World Trade Center. Although I visited the site around 18 months ago when I was in New York City last time, a lot has changed and it’s great to see that the building and construction work is definitely progressing. Last time the builders were still excavating in preparation for the foundations, and now the framework must be ... read more

New York City - 33°c After not heading to sleep until around 2am, it felt so great not to wake up until just before 10am. I think if it hadn’t have been for Aaron, and knowing I should get a move on, I probably would have carried on sleeping until mid-afternoon! After 26 consecutive days of very early starts, sleeping in has become what can only be described as the Holy Grail, and the ultimate reward! Once awake and dressed, Aaron and I headed down from our 50th floor (top of the building!) hotel room to the 44th floor’s Platinum member club lounge for breakfast. With Aaron being a Platinum club member and getting access, it’s meant we gain access to the exclusive lounge for free food and drink in very plush surroundings! It’s such a ... read more

Washington D.C. to New York - 33°c So that I had plenty of time to pack my case for the last time (on the Contiki part of my trip anyway!) and collect everything that had gotten sprawled out around my hotel room over the past 3 nights, I set my alarm for 6:45am this morning so that I would then be ready for our 7:45am departure. As it turned out I still managed to get to the coach a good 10 minutes early anyway! Once again, before I packed my case I ensured I dosed myself up on my cold and flu medication and took enough tissues with me for the journey too! We boarded the coach and Kristina played our ‘day song’ for the final time. For the past 26 days “In The Summertime” by ... read more

Washington D.C. - 34°c When the alarm went off this morning, I felt the worst I’ve felt all trip. I didn’t get much sleep at all in between all of my coughing and sneezing, with my cold symptoms running very high. I contemplated staying in bed. Missing the coach drop off at 9am would mean having to pick up a taxi into the city later on in the day. Feeling as though I ought to keep powering through, (and not wanting to pick up the $40 cab ride, being so far out of the centre) I got up, had a long shower and managed to get on the coach with about 15 others. Apparently the night had extended quite far into the early morning for many, and subsequently it was a very empty coach trip into ... read more

Washington D.C. - 32°c After dosing up on medication last night and sleeping quite heavily throughout the night, it was a bit of a struggle to get up when the alarm on my mobile phone went off at 7am today. Thankfully after a fairly cold shower owing to the fact that I can’t get to grips with how the taps work in this hotel, I was slightly more rejuvenated and ready for quite a big day, and whatever D.C. had to throw at me! After two slices of toast downstairs in the ‘do it yourself’ breakfast room and bumping into several of the group who were already down there, and those arriving after I did, we boarded the bus and headed off at 8am. Owing to a bit of morning traffic, along with the distance needed ... read more

Raleigh to Washington D.C. - 30°c We managed to have a bit of a lie in (comparatively speaking!) this morning since we didn’t have to check out and leave until 8:45am. In a way it was a nice to be checking out, safe in the knowledge that we’d be checking in to tonight’s hotel accommodation for 3 consecutive nights, rather than the 4 single nights one after the other we’d had in 4 different places. It’s been difficult knowing how much to take out of our suitcases since 12 hours later we’ve had to pack everything back up again and leave. Once we were on the road and on our way to Washington D.C. near enough everybody had dozed off. I think we’ve all been getting used to catching up on sleep whilst on board the ... read more

Savannah to Raleigh (via Charleston) - 36°c I woke up this morning feeling like death warmed up. After a rather poorly night and subsequently a severe lack of sleep, I could have done with spending at least another few hours in bed, if not the entire day! However that’s not the Contiki spirit, so in keeping with that spirit (not to mention our schedule!) I managed to get out of bed, showered, dressed and down onto the bus in good time. Once I and everyone else was aboard, I was filled in with all of the details of how the night progressed after my sudden departure, and who did what songs up on the karaoke. It was also good to see that I wasn’t the only one still feeling a bit poorly this morning, with many ... read more

St. Augustine to Savannah - 39°c After waking up in good time this morning and mercifully not finding any cockroaches in my room as Nathan and Tim had next door, I made my way down to the coach and even managed to log onto the internet whilst waiting on the coach for others to arrive - the wi-fi signal obviously strong enough where the coach was parked. It was a beautiful morning and made for a lovely start to our journey as we left St. Augustine and headed towards Savannah. We stopped off in Jacksonville around 10am for a brief half hour stop during which time I loaded up with some more snacks from a grocery store. Kristina made a joke about the fact that the back half of the bus (where I’m usually sitting) is ... read more
