The Eiffel Tower for me was really boring, but we can't go to France and not do the Eiffel Tower. I would have much rather preffered to explore the catacombs(underground tunnels where bones exhumed from mass graves are stored). First we stood in a long queue to get into the tower, then came the push and shove to get onto the elevator where we were squashed like sardines. Our hearts were pounding 13 to the dozen because we were going higher and higher and did not know what to expect!!(especially with my fear of heights) but when we got to the top, it wasn't all that we thought it would be, as everything was fenced, so it didn't feel like we were actually so high and everything was so commercial at the top of the tower. ... read more

Kat took us to the train station where a big bad surprise awaited us!!!!Our train tickets to Paris had gone up from R300 each to R900 each as we had not purchased our tickets earlier. This was depressing and I felt like kicking myself because our host in Paris had repeatedly told me to book the tickets early as this exact thing would happen!!! Now it was too late!! OK what's done is done it's a learning curve - a damn expensive one at that but we were on our way to Paris and we were excited!! And besides Kee's ticket was vaild for a whole year so she could travel for free for the entire year!!! Mmmm...I think we gonna have to leave her here in Europe!!! Out of the train station, into the streets ... read more

Today Kat offered to take us to Gstaad for a horse and sleigh ride around the lake with the free tickets that she had. Sweet Kat!! Gstaad is the playground of the rich and famous. Movie stars have their winter vacation homes here and Kat said we could probably bump into one of them in the town. This town also had really expensive shops, like Gucci and Prada. The girls were excited. Gstaad was so beautiful, the lake area even more so, but we could think of nothing except the biting cold as we rode around the lake in the minus 15 degree temperature. The girls were bored on the sleigh ride and frozen solid and thought there was actually no point to getting all frozen for nothing, but as usual I put it down to ... read more

The days we spent with Kat, Andy and Solo were very relaxing. We played in the snow, cooked together, and sat for hours on the sofa just chatting. I cooked chicken curry and roti which Solomon totally loved - and of course Kat and Andy too - but they knew this food from having travelled in India. Today Kat and Andy made plans to take us to the ski resort, which normally does not open so early in the year, but this year the snow started early, so the resort opened just this week - lucky us! Getting dressed for the ski trip was a big deal cos we needed snow clothes. Kris and I had ski pants and all three of us had snow jackets, but Kee did not have proper pants, so after trying ... read more

We arrive in Zweissiman and I phone our host Katherin's home - a little boy answers and he says that she is at work and that I must phone back in 5 minutes. It's freezing, we're starving and it's getting dark. I phone back and Solomon the little boy gives me his mom's cell number. I phone Kat and...surprise...she is not expecting us till tomorrow cos the last email I sent her said that we were going to spend an extra day in Venice!! Silly silly silly me!!!!Now she is at work and only finishes at 6pm and there is no way to get to her place without a car as they live up in the mountains, so we go into a restuarant and wait there for her as it is way too cold to wait ... read more

It was a long train ride to Switzerland as we were now entering another country & had to change trains, but it wasn't too bad as we were on time and hey magic we discovered that we didn't have to lug our bags down the million stairs - there were escalators and elevators. Gosh what were we thinking -this is Europe, hello!!!! The train jouney was pleasant - EUROSTAR really really fast, Krisel was feeling a bit dizzy. We passed thru the beautiful Italian countryside and then the Swiss. However it was getting dark early as it was winter, so we needed to keep an eye out for our stop. Zweissiman was our stop, so we had to get off at Bern and take another train to Zweissiman, but we did not know this and just ... read more

Kee writing again: Ciao everyone, if you wondering why it's always mommy n me writing it's because Kris is nonsense at story telling, but she is giving us her two cents worth as we write!! Now for our day in the city built on water...we were excited to leave for Venice...have u ever been to a city that is on water???no??then you should definetly go to Venice!! No cars, no bicycles-only walkways and boats. Before we could leave for our Venice visit, we were a bit scared... now granma and Vilo mom please don't freak when you read this!!! Vincenzo told us that every two weeks or so or whenever it rained, the entire city floods & we have to know how to swim as we could be knee deep in water (and mom can't swim-so ... read more

Keeran writing again: As soon as we arrived in Vincenza, we phoned mom's friend (our host - Vincenzo who said he would be at the train station in ten minutes to pick us up. We waited again a bit anxiously! We are always anxious when we meeting our new hosts, but then we just get so used to them, we don't want to leave). We arrived at Vincenzo's house and were taken aback!! The house was huge and it was set on a massive olive plantation. His wife Maria had lunch ready for us after which Vincenzo took us on a tour of his gigantic garden. It was impressive!! Later Maria took us on a tour of the town of Vincenza after which we picked up their older daughter Francessa from school. Maria, Francessa and Federicka ... read more

Europe » San Marino » San Marino December 12th 2009

Today Mario made plans to take us to San Marino, which is a country on its own with its own flag and its own currency (well the cents are different from the euro cents) After shopping for groceries for dinner we headed off in two cars down the beautiful Rimini countryside to San Marino. San Marino is a little town and the main attraction there is the castle on top of Monte Titano(the highest mountain peak in San Marino). As it was almost christmas, there was a huge snowglobe with a scene of the nativity just outside the castle. Now we really had the christmassy feeling ( you know me, I'm a sucker for all this mooshy stuff!!) After a lovely(albeit rainy) day in San Marino, we headed back to the house, where I made dinner, ... read more
