My mom and I are off to the Azores! What and where are the Azores you might ask? I asked myself that very question the first time I saw this trip pop up on TravelZoo several years ago. Through the wonder of Google, I learned the Azores are a group of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that are part of Portugal. There are nine islands and we are visiting the third largest, Terceira. Guidebooks are limited so we are going in a bit blindly, but it will make discovering this island that much more interesting. Here is our itinerary! March 14 - Depart O'Hare at 4:34 arriving in Boston at 7:55 PM Depart Boston at 11:05 PM arriving in Terceira at 6:45 AM on the 15th March 15 - 22 - Reservation at ... read more

My trip to Oregon came to an end with a long day of travel. I used my airline miles for both flights and the only way I could get home was to fly to Phoenix and then O'Hare. Because I like to get to the airport early, I was up and leaving my Airbnb by 7. The Portland airport was really nice, with free wi-fi and comfortable waiting areas. The new thing in security was having to put any electronic device larger than a cell phone in its own bin. So now I needed three bins, one for my laptop, one for my Kindle and one for my shoes, liquids and camera bag. The amount of bins you use is getting crazy! The Phoenix airport did not have free wi-fi, I had to take a train ... read more

My Airbnb host suggested Mount St Helens as a good option for something to do to beat the heat in Portland and the traffic to the coast. The park was only a 2 hour drive so I decided to make a day of it. And I would say it was worth it! Mount St Helens is a part of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and falls under the USDA's forest service. It is technically called the Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument and so I was able to get a stamp for my national park passport. The only area I had to pay a fee for was the Observatory, but the $8 was worth it for the visitor center and outdoor viewing platform. It's a fairly easy drive to get to the park from Portland and ... read more

Due to the excessive heat in the forecast for the weekend, I decided to do all the things on my Portland list in one day. I ended up seeing everything I wanted to and I lucked out with the weather. I headed out to find a TriMet station with parking. After a little searching, and a drive through the Nike campus, I found a park and ride at the Beaverton Creek stop. The TriMet consists of the Max train, buses and the Portland streetcars. $5 buys you an all day pass that is good on any of these, which is a great deal if you are going anywhere in the city. There are plenty of signs and each stop is clearly announced on the train. I took the blue line to the Washington Park stop to ... read more

Today was mostly driving, with a little sightseeing thrown in. I hated to leave the coast, especially since Portland is under an excessive heat watch starting tomorrow, but I wanted to check out some things in and around Portland. I left the very chilly coast and headed back the same route I had come in on. I really enjoyed driving along Highway 6 through the Tillamook Forest. The road is never very steep and it winds through the hills with green trees all around. I don't know the highest elevation in this area, but the one sign I saw said 1500 feet. It was still cool and cloudy through the forest and that made for a nice drive. My first stop of the day was Oregon City, home to the terminus of the Oregon Trail. Now ... read more

Today was my last day on the Oregon Coast and I decided to head south again to see a whale one last time. The day started out very chilly and foggy and I thought it would never clear up. Most of the drive to Newport was through the mist on the 101. I stopped at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Park again to check out the tidal pools. The pass I bought the other day was actually good for three days so I was able to get in without paying again. Unfortunately, the tide pools were still closed. I didn't see any seals on the beach, but maybe there was one just out of view. The whole rest of the area was pretty well covered in mist so I wasn't able to see very far offshore at ... read more

I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do today, other than I was going to drive north. I thought I would go all the way up to Astoria, but I never made it past Cannon Beach. This morning it was quite cold and cloudy. I had some guests out in the water to watch while eating my breakfast, two sea lions! They were right up by the shore looking for fish I suppose. A nice start to the morning. I headed north from Tillamook on the 101. Here the road winds along Tillamook Bay with some nice green hills on either side. Beautiful scenery, even with the clouds! There are plenty of pullouts for checking out the views and I would recommend stopping at several. Most have information signs about the area and most ... read more

Every time I travel to an ocean, I always say "this time I'm going to see a whale" and every time I'm let down. Yes, I saw some way far off in Hawaii once, but they were far off dots on the horizon. I want one to be close enough to see the size and beauty of it. Today, my whale dream became a reality! There are so many things to see and do along the Oregon coast so its hard to pick and choose when you have limited time. I decided it would be a good idea to head south again to try and find the elusive whale. All the guidebooks and area magazines say the resident whales hang out around Depoe Bay, about an hour and a half south of my hotel. I found ... read more

Today was spent following the Three Capes Scenic Loop. I'm not sure why it's a loop since it runs north to south and is not a circle, but there are three capes and it's scenic and we'll leave it at that. Being on central time, I woke up at a normal time for me of 5:30, which is only 3:30 out here in Oregon. Not much to do that early in the morning so I dozed in bed and listened to the waves. Eventually I got up and had breakfast. This hotel does not offer breakfast so I brought my own oatmeal cups and got juice at the store, which is enough to fuel me for a morning of exploring. I took Highway 101 south to Pacific City rather than drive the scenic loop route so ... read more

I can now cross another state off my list as I have made it to Oregon! I'm very much looking forward to recharging my batteries out here and i can feel it happening already. My wonderful sister took me to O'Hare early this morning for my flight. I knew this trip was going to be good when my gate was right after I came through security. How often does that happen! The flight was an uneventful four hours and some change. The descent into Portland was pretty cool with the mountains on either side of the plane. I don't know which one was Mt Hood, but they were all beautiful. The Portland airport was quiet and easy to navigate. I made my way to the rental car counter, checked in and even got a free upgrade ... read more
