So I think this is now our sixth day in Shangrila and we're feeling fully recovered from our bout of giardia and ready to get back on the road.. G was having a hard time recovering and refused to take any meds until we managed to get enough for both of us, so we checked out the local pharmacy and later the hospital to see if we could get more metronidazol. After getting in contact with an American doctor, we managed to get more than enough meds. Luckily G managed to recover without needing any. We were actually thinking of leaving a couple of days earlier but it's been snowing and the roads were quite icy. We really enjoyed the Tibetan culture and people in this area and visited the Songzanlin monastery where you get basically ... read more

25 km 7.0km/hr 3:34:00 I had a rough night as I woke up around midnight wanting to get sick and/or have diahrrea! I got dressed to go outside but ended up fighting it most of the rest of the night as it was so cold outside-lol! I finally got a couple of hours sleep and then woke up early. It was a brisk -8 degres C still at 7a.m! I noticed that I was having strong egg-tasting burps and from experience realized that I had giardia(traveller's diahrrea usually from bad water or from poor hygiene in restaurants etc). Luckily I had medication to treat it but it can take a week until you feel 100 percent. Anyway, we got packed up and began to cont. our climb but we were almost out of water so we ... read more

63 km 10.6km/hr 5:57:20 Lots of climbing again today reaching altitudes over 3000m but rewarded with some fun downhills and incredible views of pine forests and snow-capped peaks! We got a late start again today as brekkie took a long time. We got as far as a town called Annan and realized that we should consider finding a camping spot so we bought a little food and cont'd a couple of km of steep uphill out of town until we found a decent spot. By the time we finished setting up camp it was almost dark so we cooked up some REALLY spicy ramen and had some hot chocolate and chips before tucking in.... read more

45km 9.3km/hr 4:54:05 Elevation change:1760m at low point past Walnut Grove to 2750m at Haba We got away early from Tina's guesthouse in Tiger leaping gorge and headed for Chateau Woody's guesthouse for brekkie. As it turned out it was only a couple of km away and all downhill. Had we known that the night before we would have made the push for it! What an idyllic location with the gorge below and snow-capped peaks on either side! Really nice patios-awesome place to read a book. They were so friendly too-we ended up staying there for a couple of hours and soaking it all in. It was cold but the skies were clear and the views amazing! So we finally left there quite late and decided that we'd only ride as far as Haba as we ... read more

Distance 103 km, Average 14km/hr, Actual Riding Time 7:22:36 So once again after a late start, saying our final goodbyes to Norm and Nikki and buying a couple of delicious vegetable stuffed dumplings for the road we were ready for our long journey towards Shangri-la. The weather was a bit cool but was helpful for the long initial climb up. It was a bit of a struggle for me (G)since I was still fighting a cold but thankfully the climb wasn't too steep. Once we reached the top of the pass, it started to snow a little and the road became wet and slick but we really enjoyed our very long downhill. At the bottom of the pass the snow stopped and sun glowed as we biked along the Yangzte River. It was really a beautiful ... read more

Sapa,Vietnam to Kunming,China to Lijiang,China SapaHekou(China) 42km 27km/hr 1:40:23 The downhill to Lao Cai was super fun-barely having to pedal for 32km or so is pretty cool! We decided to make up a little time again and take a bus to Kunming as we'd need at least a month further down the road to get from Shangri-la to Lhasa,Tibet. There were no more buses that day so we hit up hotel. Oh yeah, shortly after getting our passports checked and stamped and bags x-rayed in search of the oh-so bad Lonely Planet guide which doesn't include Taiwan as part of China, a guy in military fatigues in Hekou at the border post asked me to pose with a touch screen tourist info. machine and give a big thumbs up while he took a photo for promo ... read more

Feb.03/08 HanoiViet Tri 84km 15.3km/hr Got away from Hanoi heading towards Noi Bai airport on hwy 3 around west lake and past the dog meat restaurant strip. Leaving town we passed through literally at least a 6km strip that had vendors selling small pink peach blossom trees for Tet(Vietnamese version of Chinese New Year-celebrated at the same time and their equivalent to our X-mas) as well as small mandarin trees. The traffic was quite thick and we had to be careful as people were shoppinng as they were driving along and would stop suddenly when they saw a potential purchase! We crossed the big bridge over the Red river with the traffic despite seeing a no bike sign as we really didn't seem to see an alternate route(like a separate bike and moped bridge when we ... read more
