Taking a break with some locals.....
So I think this is now our sixth day in Shangrila and we're feeling fully recovered from our bout of giardia and ready to get back on the road.. G was having a hard time recovering and refused to take any meds until we managed to get enough for both of us, so we checked out the local pharmacy and later the hospital to see if we could get more metronidazol. After getting in contact with an American doctor, we managed to get more than enough meds. Luckily G managed to recover without needing any.
We were actually thinking of leaving a couple of days earlier but it's been snowing and the roads were quite icy. We really enjoyed the Tibetan culture and people in this area and visited the Songzanlin monastery where you get basically the run of the place and get to see a slice of the daily lives of the more than 600 monks that live there-it was really awesome! It's a beautiful day today and tomorrow looks good as well so we'll likely be off in the a.m. Unfortunately our plans to continue cycling to Lhasa,Tibet have been thwarted by one of their worst winters in many

many years making the roads impassable for us. So we've been hanging out here with some super-nice people(Helen and Marco at Helen's pizza, Rob from Canada who's travelling by motorcycle, Mathieu the Belgian guy who lives here now, and Gil and the gang at Barley guesthouse) and looking at maps and talking to locals like Kevin(american ex-pat who has a gear shop and guesthouse) and Jean Luc who has an ngo here doing some good work. Our plan now is to head slightly north and then go west through Weixi and then south along the Mekong towards Baoshan and then maybe Xishuanbanna area of Yunnan province. It sounds great and the weather is MUCH warmer. It should be especially fun along the mekong as it's well off the beaten path! That being said there may not be that many more updates for while again-sorry! We may be able to in Baoshan and then maybe again if we make it to Jinghong. Anyway, we're having an amazing time as it's more about the people we meet along the way first and the scenery etc second(which don't get us wrong has been spectacular too!) and we're feeling good and definitely ready for
