At some point, we plan to retire to South Carolina, and we decided to use some vacation time to see some things in middle America that will be a long trip once we reach the east coast. For some time, I have wanted to visit Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery where my mother's first husband (and my sister's father) is buried. He was a gunner on a B-24 during World War II. Part of the 459th Bombardier Group, they flew out of Giulia, Italy. On April 13, 1943 the plane was shot down near what is now Gorica, Croatia with the loss of the entire crew. During World War II, the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery became the final resting place for many groups of servicemen whose remains were recovered in such a manner that identification of individuals ... read more

Reflections (warning: some political commentary) We drove about 4000 miles on this trip, more than we would have liked, but unavoidable given the distances between points. In this area of the world, points of interest are far apart, and there is really no way to experience them without driving. As in Europe, I was struck by the difference in the Canadian investment in infrastructure and the amount invested in the United States. Roads were well maintained, smooth, and well marked. Bridges were often new. Those on the political right like to cry out about the financial burden we are leaving to our children with the national debt. While I agree that there is reason to be concerned about that, it is pretty obvious that the way out of that problem is to increase revenues, not simply ... read more

"Every little thing she does is magic Everything she does just turns me on Even though my life before was tragic Now I know my love for her goes on" With our first listening to The Police getting us out the door, we started from North Sydney NS to St. John NB. We found it interesting to watch the ferry ready itself for disembarkation. A giant panel in what had appeared to be a featureless fron below the bridge swung open, a ramp lifted into place, and a portion of the bow including the flagstaff swung upward and out of the way, making it possible to disembark vehicles on two levels (only one had been available in Argentia). Today was just a Point A to Point B day, with a re-tracing of roads we had driven ... read more

"Whenever I'm with him Something inside Starts to burning And I'm filled with desire" Martha and the Vandellas started us off on a journey that contained more heat at the end than at the beginning. We have experienced good weather throughout the trip other than the fog at Acadia, but today made it clear (pun intended) that good weather is not something on which you depend. Our main goal was to drive to the ferry that would carry us overnight from Argentia NL back to North Sydney NS and then drive to St. John NB. Since we had extra time before the afternoon ferry boarding, we decide to drive the coast south of St. John's, visiting the Cape Spear lighthouse and some wildlife areas. The Avalon Peninsula south of St. John's contains the earliest settlements on ... read more

"I'm trying to protect what I keep inside All the reasons why I live my life" We did not drive today, so no iPod choice, but given the miles we have covered I thought that Crossroads by Tracy Chapman would be good for starting music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3PX267adKs Today mostly consisted of a little shopping sandwiched around a fantastic cruise outside the harbor to see puffins and whales. St. John's was founded in 1583 when Sir Humphrey Gilbert landed on this "new found lande" and claimed it for the queen (Elizabeth I), thus founding the British overseas empire. It is thus the oldest seaport in North America. It also lays claim to the title of the oldest settlement in North America to be incorporated as a city. The main Street, Water Street, is the oldest street, laid out ... read more

" So won't you smile for the camera I know I'll love you better" With our agenda for the day centered around visiting Dildo on Trinity Bay, it was only natural that we started with the music of Steely Dan singing "Peg". The distances in NL can be pretty great. We drove for four hours before the interesting part of the trip, the peninsula east of Trinity Bay. The trip was to be a lark, but turned out to be one of the prettiest drives of the trip. Our journey (after the initial mostly uninteresting slog from Grand Falls-Windsor) took us from Lake Dildo through South Dildo and Dildo, then on through Heart's Delight, Heart's Desire, and Heart's Content, across the peninsula to Concepcion Bay, then on down to St. John's. Placentia will come another day. ... read more

"I guess, you say, what could make me feel this way My girl, my girl, my girl! talking 'bout my girl, My Girl! With the Temptations crackling through the speaker, and at 2 A.M. since we had to be there 2 hours in advance to catch the 5:30 ferry to Newfoundland, we headed out. Although I have been auto ferries before, never have I seen one of this size. I don't know how many vehicles it holds, but the number is certainly in the hundreds. You leave your car and proceed upstairs where they have multiple TV's, several restaurants and cafes, snacks, and comfortable reclining seats. The passage took about 5.5 hours, and was certainly comfortable enough. Once on land again, we had a drive of about 460 km to Grand Falls-Windsor NL. Newfoundland is a ... read more

"I've tried everything I know, to try and make you mine And I think I'm going to love you for a long, long time" Linda Ronstadt started us off on a long days' drive from Charlottetown to Sydney NS via the Cape Breton National Park with its spectacular headlands, vistas, mountains, lakes, and inlets. The scenery was spectacular, although not necessarily any better than others such as Big Sur. It was a day covering over 500 miles, and we have to leave the hotel at 2:30 tomorrow morning to catch the ferry to Newfoundland, so this will not include photos or any long dialog. More later. Tomorrow: ferry to Port-aux-Basques Newfoundland and then on to Grand Falls-Windsor NF, another fairly long day.... read more
