The Palace is a pretty cool place. That's where I'm staying. It's actually called Palace Backpackers now but it was originally called The People's Palace and, affectionally, known as the Lady of Lace due to the wonderful lattice work around the building. It was owned by the Salvation Army and has been threatened with being knocked down on several occasions contributing to why it is heritage listed these days. The Salvation Army opened it on 27 June, 1911 for the average Joe. Rooms cost $8 a night at one stage. That's a bit of a contrast to the $45 that I pay.
