Calgary
Great pictures. Our daughter, her husband and their two boys were in Lake Louise in early March. They had a great time there. Looked like there was more snow than in your pictures. We have white tailed deer in out local park where we take daily walks.

Calgary snow
Especially this year, the mountains have had lots of snow, and Calgary has had hardly any. Glad your daughter's family enjoyed Lake Louise.

Calgary has done some wonderful work, making the river valleys accessible for recreation. I love your shot of grasses in the morning light.

Grasses in the morning
Thanks, I like the grasses in this photo too. I often take photos of grasses, but they don't always convey what I saw.

Architectural details
In my opinion, we could do worse than to integrate some of the decorative detail on these buildings into our own public-space architecture. I especially like the curves that merge into a single point - if there's a name for that shape, I don't know it. :-)

Curvature in Architecture
... is graceful and soothing.

Perfect day indeed
Beautifully narration Judith. I felt like I was there. Brought back memories of my time at Athens’ Monasitiraki market during the heat wave in August 2000. My rubber-soled sandals were sticking to cobblestones. So glad you patiently negotiated- carpet looks beautiful. Where dis you place it in your home?

Story of a perfect day
So glad that you felt like you were with me in the scenes! The rug hangs in my bedroom where I can see it every day. With such close attention, I appreciate it even more now than when I bought it.

How lovely to get a special carpet and a funny story in one transaction. The shots of the Central Souk look like some of the streetscapes you've posted - functionally familiar and yet interestingly foreign at the same time. The glimpses of what I presume to be commercial architecture and decoration are superb.

Mix of styles
So often the approach to arranging new facilities is similar all over the world, but local traditions make them especially interesting to travellers.

Kitchen knobs
If I knew, I'd forgotten where the knobs came from. That explains their exotic appearance: sort-of similar to Mexican ceramics but hardly to be mistaken for them. I'm impressed that you arrived home with the right number . . .

Field Trip
That dust/sand-in-the-air atmosphere occurs in the Phoenix area, too; also the growth mostly in the "washes" - the local wadis. Lots of differences between the two deserts, but some interesting similarities. How lucky to have knowledgeable guides who live in the area, and know at least some of the ins and outs (like that Indian women are a likely source of English speakers - who knew?).

Approximations and window shopping
I laughed at your approximate burger. It reminded me of your "North American" supper in Nigeria - meat, starch, vegetable, all cooked separately (I think) - that no North American would recognize as familiar. As for the window shopping, it looks like fun, and the best way to interact with pricey jewelry!

Visas and munchies
What a day! Having attempted to catch up in order, I don't yet know how it went at the border, but at least I know you didn't get thrown in the clink. And what fun to attend a cocktail party at a consulate. For some reason, these have not much come my way, either. That mosque is spectacular.

American University of Sharjah
Very beautiful and impressive buildings.

What fun to be able to indulge your love of silk in a market with different product sources from what you're used to. (Lorna imported specialty batiks and Japanese fabrics for quilting because she couldn't find them for sale in Canada or the USA.)

Silk
Every trip that includes a fabric shop is special, because making clothes outside of factories is becoming ever more rare.

Wow
What an amazing mosque. Your photo is better than the one on Wikipedia, says me. I went there to see if there were any shots of the interior. Some of the photos associated with that website make me almost ready to consider travel in the region, for the architecture alone. Looking forward to reading about your fabric purchases.

Architecture in Dubai
Apparently it is even more extraordinary now compared to when I was there.

Nothing all good or all bad?
I can't say that I'd like to live in a place where I always had to have a male member of my family with me in public to avoid being pelted with, well, anything. Nor would I necessarily appreciate an emir-style polity. On the other hand, it sounds like the result of having one brain behind the aesthetics of public infrastructure is yielding good results. Maybe it depends on whose brain . . .
27th January 2022

Whose brain?
The essential question in all dictatorial matters.
15th January 2022

Interesting observation - the street-level infrastructure (and the streets) do look remarkably familiar, allowing for the completely different alphabet on the signs. Functionality trumps all, I guess. I checked out the site of the first hotel. Clearly, there is no upper limit to luxury.

Luxury
Dubai has made itself synonymous with unimagined luxury.

What splendour. Reminded me of the Sikh temple i visited in India 2019. Gold everywhere!

Interesting comparison of faiths and the expression of reverence. Thanks
