We set sail, ok actually board the plane in dc at 5:05 pm for an overnight that eventually lands in Porto, Portugal. At this point Kathy and I will beg for a rental car that is an automatic. Or maybe even two cars. If that doesn't work we will hitchhike to Hippikos our final destination. Hippikos if you want to peek can be found at hippikos.pt. Why didn't we just book a car online, oh alas we tried for days, every rental car agency known to man and a few not known. In the end we realized that August is a very busy travel month for Portugal and unlike Americans every European can drive a stick so automatics that seat six are few and far between. The girls, Annie, Heather & Sage will have three lessons ... read more

Side note about Read's Hotel where we are staying. It is owned by a very nice British family who found an a 500 year old neglected estate in 1989 while at their vacation home in Mallorca. They purchase it and spent seven years restoring it to its current splendor. The owner said thank goodness he didn't know what he was getting into when he started this venture he thought it would take him 2 years at most. He used to be a lawyer in London, he found that the responsibility of owning a hotel is even more than a lawyer, because now he feels responsible for everyone who visits Read's enjoying their holiday to the utmost. They really make you feel at home here, so much so that we have had dinner here every night and ... read more

Wow, what a day! Last night we discussed riding up the mountain to Orient today. I did not commit because I was more than a little worried about my ability to make it up a real mountain. Plus the desire to worry my mother to death before hand seemed silly. This morning, I decided that I should give it a try, you don't know what you are capable of if you sit at the bottom of the mountain. So I agreed to give it a go. Our plan was to climb up to town of Bunyola village of Orient which is part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and then come back the same way so a big descent and then begin the rest of our ride. The rest our ride was to include a ... read more

Good News, I fell asleep last night fast and woke with no headache, which means all systems go for another big day of cycling. We started of with a plan which we stuck to for the most part. We headed via bike path to St Eugenia, which is a lovely town, it is the one with the lovely windmill, actually many of the mallorcan towns have windmills that look very dutch. After a little research I found out that they were originally flour mills. Speaking of we saw what looked like fields of wheat near the shore. Some of them are still in use, most are not, and in one town they have converted it to a cafe. After Eugenia we headed to Algaida which is the home to cafe Suc. Friday is market day in ... read more

We started our day the usual way, we have a hard time getting out of bed due to the time change, but knowing the only way to get coffee is to go to breakfast usually gets me moving. We have a buffet breakfast every morning in the dining room at the Hotel. It is a great spread, tons of fresh fruit, pastries, cereal, yogurt also the classic European meats and cheeses that I have no interest in for breakfast. The highlight is the fresh squeezed orange juice. We started by driving down to Manacor where the pearl factory is located, it is sad to admit that yesterday on our bikes we were only a couple of miles from the pearl factory but there is no way we could have carried them back on our bikes, and ... read more

Happy Anniversary to us! We spent the day in a perfect way cycling ourselves silly. Our plan which did not end up working was to cycle from Santa Maria to Manacor to buy Mallorcan Pearls. Let me clarify, Mallorcan Pearls are supposed to look just like the real deal but are painstakingly made in a factory with fish scales. I am intrigued so we decided that jewelery is easy to carry so it was the one thing we could shop for on the bike. On our way we planned on having lunch in Sineu. We were 1.8 miles down the road and realized that while we had some Euros in our pocket we did not have a credit card so Ed headed back to the room to get his wallet and told me to keep going, ... read more

Well, let me just say that even a little positive encouragement is all I need to keep blogging so remember, at least a few of you asked for it. I have to backtrack to last night at dinner where we again tried to eat the breadbasket. There are two things in life that Ed hates, live music and having the chef visit your table. Now this is not meant to offend anyone who enjoys these things, but for Ed it is the equivalent to locking him in a room with snakes. Of course if the live music is Neil Diamond I think he would make an exception, Ed is a big Neil Diamond fan. So now you are thinking there was live music and the chef visited our table. No, the music was elevator versions of ... read more

Well, I have to admit that my first attempt at blogging was a little disastrous. I started typing about our time here in Mallorca only to have my computer lose the wifi connection and could not find what I had typed. Enough whining. Our flight from NY to Madrid was uneventful in the sense that we had dinner and then slept. Dinner was good, which surprised both of us because we were expecting it to be pretty bad. Since we did not eat prior to boarding the flight we were pleasantly surprised. I took Advil PM as soon as the flight took off so by the time they served dinner I was literally falling asleep in my crab cakes. I slept soundly until thirty minutes prior to landing. I am getting ready to take my Advil ... read more
