A Very Merry Husky Christmas The run up to Christmas was a busy one this year! On Wednesday the 22nd we had two women come to have the 'Oak Lake' experiance. This is an 1 1/2 session whereby they meet the dogs, help collar the dogs, harness the dogs and have a 4-5 mile run sitting in the sled. Its a easy and nice way to experiance dog sledding (though nothing is like actually driving the sled! Its comparable to sitting in a car versus actually driving the car) and meet 14 beautiful huskies. Fourteen because Chris- another one of Linda's handlers however he is married with a child my age! So only pops in occasionally being busy with work- leant us Sasha for a week or so! Sasha is Wimzi's sister and is absoultly ... read more

Fights & New Arrivals On Monday Linda and I decided to take the dogs on another run! Now due to the huge snow blizzard/fall (5th worst since records began- just had to shove it in there!) the weight of the snow pushed down on the icy lake and cracks formed...so water seeped into said snow and thus slush formed! Slush is hard for the dogs to run in and hard for the poor human on the back to run alongside the sled to help the dogs! But we took our chances and went for it! As we were hooking the dogs up to the fence Phoneix growled at Oken as he walked past but Linda and I brushed it off as nothing....in forsight twas a baad move! We put the dogs onto the gangline, I ... read more

Home Alone! About a week ago Linda decided to go to New Hampshire to visit the puppies! Thus leaving me in charge....alone...for four days! She was due to fly on Thursday at 6:00am and began preparing me for my aloneness. However...Tuesday night a horrible revalation happened. We discovered the foot long bungee used to hold a door open in the Klaus/Oken/White feather kennel...had dissapeared! Completly vanished into thin air. Now I HAD noticed its disappearance the night before but stupidly thought Linda has removed it. NO. She had not! 'We HAVE to find it' She ordered after picking up one of the metal S rings thats on either end. (It was lying on the floor near a dog house) and I quickly began my search, first digging with my hands the edge of the kennel ... read more

My third run! Today we had a team of 7, and decided to put Oken up in lead on his own! And boy what a good leader dog he was :) Normally he is paired with Klaus but recently Klaus has had problems listening and following orders...but Oken tried to carry them out! However he didnt have the strength or confidence to drag Klaussyroo over to the right side so I had to hop out of the sled/run off the cart and holla at them to move the right way. Soooo....Oken went on his own :) We began running and Linda directed him to go Haw (left), but no Oken decided right (gee) was a better way forward. So Linda stomped on the drag pad (a big square that lies between the runners and helps ... read more

8 inch thick ice and Dog Sledding!! Last night, Linda and I walked across the lake out to the bridge to check the thickness of the ice. In this area is doesn't freeze well normally...so we got out the big eskimo ice drill and began drilling! When drilling ice it is important to keep your feet about shoulder width apart to spread you weight out, we also took a phone with us in case of an emergency! People die every year from slipping under ice! So we drilled, one of us holding the house dogs (who were on the evening walk!) and the other person attacked the ice. After breaking through you then have to guestimate the depth. Lets just say my inch is about 3 actual inches! So I was like ahh its about ... read more

Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is an American national holiday on the fourth Thursday of November, and its basically when families come together and give thanks to each other! So when Thursday came around millions of USA citizens cooked up a feast :) (well according to the TV 92% of Americans would be eating Turkey..!) We decided to have our feast on Saturday, giving us Thursday to chillax and have some free time! We let each dog group out for an hour or so, ½ the time spent in the yard, and the rest in the house. Now when dogs come into the house it is a mission simply trying to watch them! Most of them need virtually staring at to ensure they don’t pee or worse on the carpets! So I spent a good part of my ... read more

Frozen Lake! Bordering Linda's land is Oak Lake one of many lakes in Minnesota! (It being the state of 10,000 lakes of course!- actually its 14,215 but who's counting...). And I have captured many lovely photos of it during sunrises and cloudless days but now I have a new angle...as its completly frozen! It began yesterday morning with the edges freezing first. Then the ice creeped in gradually forming lines from one side to the other and when I woke up this morning the whole thing was covered! Last night I went down with my stick I stole from the north and managed to pierce a hole in the ice- however it was strong enough for me to put one foot on it and then lean my weight on that foot! However when I just ... read more

Hippy fair and Poorly dogs I woke up at 5am on Saturday morning to feed/pick up dog poo, a normal daily routine (though slightly earlier!). But when I arrived at the dog kennels a horror scene unfolded...all thirteen of them had servere diarhoa and by servere I MEAN it! I shall try and explain in the nicest way possible...poo pancakes pretty much sums it up! And LOTS of them. I'd say each dog averaged 5 plus 10-20 'little' bits which works out (if my maths is correct!) at 65 big jobbies and 195 little ones. I do apologise for the extent I am dragging this out but seriously, this is my life at the moment! It took roughly an hour to pick this up using a shovel because they had frozen to the ground! Wimzi's first kill Yesterday at approximatly 4:30pm I witnessed my first death. The death of a Muskrat. We let the dogs out into the front yard (Linda had a whopping great big fence put in about 3 weeks ago so they can have a bigger playground!) in groups no bigger than four, one consiting of Wimzi, Tuloon, Phoneix and Sweetpea- group 2. They ran up and down having great fun, prancing in the snow, running near the lakes edge...when suddenly Wimzi disappeared. Only for a moment then up she jumped from the rivers edge with a something in her mouth! "Shes caught a Muskrat!" Linda cried and we ran like freaking nutty things after her. Now persuading a dog to do something is no easy feat and it comes in four stages- 1) Pleading- please ... read more
