We're in Dunedin. At a critical point on our journey into the city centre, I saw a sign for Corstorphine, which completely threw me, but fortunately we still managed to get into the centre without any trouble. Weather is still pretty crap - heavy showers and cold - it's midsummer here or is supposed to be but we're both wearing fleeces and our waterproof jackets! We've booked into the backpackers for 4 nights. It's fairly central ie literally 2 minutes from their main square (which is actually an octagon). We went for a walk along Princes Street and Willy has bought another two books and is now reading. I've been trying to find an Eddi Reader CD (as a present for Christine our hostess in Christchurch) and get my camera repaired. "We don't have any of ... read more

Not the group - the weather. It has been particularly atrocious for mid-summer I douibt if we've had 3 decent days in a row. Boxing Day started off promisingly enough - the previous night's rain had eventually stopped. We phoned home, where it was still Christmas Day and then packed up a still damp tent and left Wanaka. We travelled South through Roxburgh, Ettrick and other very Scottish sounding names - and the sun came out with ferocious intensity and it suddenly got really hot. The scenery had changed and we were in bare brown stony hills like you get in cowboy movies and car adverts. We noticed the familiar green and gold of a DOC scenic reserve and turned off the main road for a walk around a lake. The lake turned out to be ... read more

Christmas Eve went Christmas shopping (only for food and sunglasses for me (to replace the ones I'd left in Lesley's garden). In the afternoon we climbed the nearby Mt Iron coming across a very young quail hiding under the seat at the viewpoint on the top. Every time anyone with small children arrived they would gather round the poor thing making it impossible for the parents (if they were around) to get back to it. We did try and chase it into the nearby bushes but it soon returned. Don't know what happened to it but am not very optimistic. Christmas Day - were awakened by the kids in the tent behind us at about 6.30. Beautiful sunny morning and already feeling warm. Eventually got up and had breakfast opened pressies - new t-shirts for both ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Glaciers December 23rd 2006

Thursday - woke up to find the clouds gone and a beautiful snow-capped mountain outside our door. So we went for a walk to see the Franz Josef glacier - we got pretty close to it, but didn't actually walk on it. Close up, glaciers are not pristine and white, but dirty, covered with soil and rocks, and the meltwater that flows out of them is milky grey with silt. Access to the area immediately in front of the glacier is by ladder and appears to be controlled by the companies running the tours. However we ignored the various warnings and during a break in the procession of guided tours ascended the latter and made our way to within 20 yds or so of the glacier itself. Close up it is indeed massive, row upon row ... read more

Woke in Lesley's garden to a steady drizzle. Quick cup of tea then packed the tent and headed south. Stopped in Westport for breakfast and to check e-mail by the time we came out of the cafe the sun was trying to break through so set off south towards Greymouth (sounds inviting no?). Stopped at Truman track recommended by Lesley as one of the best short walks on the west coast - it was. A track down through native forest - rata, rimu, matai and southern palm trees intertwined with various shrubs including Kiekie (like a a small NZ cordyline which can grow on other plants eg in forks in trees), supplejack (the vine so common in north island forests, the ever present manuka etc ( David Bellamy eat your heart out). The path then wound ... read more

Its coming on Christmas and the sun is shining the sky is blue or was yesterday today its more reminiscent of Scotland - a scotch mist but its early still and the one thing you can say about weather in NZ its changeable. But to our tale after a very pleasant walk along 6 mile creek we returned to Murchison and headed out to meet Brian and Bella. They live some 11km west of Murchison itself. Their propoerty consists of a bit of garden, a bit of pasture ( Brian has 2 calves he's raising for the meat) and a bit of mainly native bush with a small burn running along between the pasture and the bush. We were made most welcome and spent a brilliant evening - a few beers, wine etc and roast lamb ... read more

Left Kaikoura in a veritable storm horizontal thunderstorm - drove north up the coast on what should have been a scenic road to rival the Pacific drive down Big Sur fortunate road was just too far from the beach for the bigger waves to reach us. However after an hour or so (after we'd left the coast) the weather abated. We decided to head for Nelson as the weather forecast for there was better, picked up a couple of French hitchhikers en route and arrived Nelson mid afternoon. After a look around we decided to opt for an upmarket (for us ) holiday apartment rather than the usual campsite or backpackers hostel. It was a lovely small aprtment with a large bedroom, well fitten kitchen cum dining room and a door on to the garden luxury. ... read more

Flew to South Island without much hassle - 45 minute delay. So it was good bye to wild and windy Wellington hello (hopefully) sunny Christchurch. Were met at the airport by Christine our host for the next week while we helped her get her garden sorted as a first step towards becoming organic. Christine is bubbly blond in her early fifties and made us very welcome. We spent the first afternoon chatting and looking round her garden working out what we would be doing (lots!). She lives on the edge of Christchurch with her 5 cats and her garden backs on to the Avon estuary (named by "a Scotsman after a small stream back home"). Lots of typical estuary birds - herons (at least 2 different kinds, white throated shags, black and pied oyster catchers, Siberian ... read more

We drove the last little bit to Wellington and right into the Centre to the Youth Hostel, which was exactly where the map said it should be. It was full, so we were forced to spend the night in a proper hotel. This turned out to be very fortunate, as the hotel had a two for one offer on evening meals - we each got an 8 ounce steak, two eggs and real home cooked chips and two beers for a grand total of 29 dollars (ten pounds to you and me) and it was delicious. We returned the hire car two days early, as it's just a pain having a car in the city centre. We got a daytripper bus ticket and have been using it to its full. Today we took the cable ... read more

Set off from our last stop Tairua? with the intention of stopping in another of the Dept of Conservation campsites south of Lake Taupo. Weather was fine if a little windy, drive down was uneventful apart from another pleasant meal stop (more 2nd breakfasts) We stopped at a cafe called Cat's Pyjamas in Katikati (aren't the town names fabulous). I had this ridiculous carrot cake topped with fresh strawberries (photo later). From there we drove down to Lake Taupo, stopped to get some info on local DoC campsites. By this time blue sky was disappearing but optimistic as ever we headed south looking forward to seeing Mt Ruape (excuse spelling) used as Mt Doom in Lord of Rings. Unfortunately by the time we had left Lake Taupo weather had really closed into heavy squally showers and ... read more
