We’re off on an adventure to the Great Smoky Mountains! The bulk of our trip will be in Tennessee with Andrew’s family, and we’re hoping to catch the synchronous fireflies at Elkmont, our campground. Last night, we drove for about four hours and stopped in Hannibal, Missouri, to stay overnight. This was Mark Twain’s hometown and is the inspiration of his popular adventure stories of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Andrew’s paternal grandmother is originally from this part of the country. Her family is from Louisiana, Missouri, so Andrew’s been here a few times when he was a child. We were hoping to see the Mark Twain cave this morning before heading back out on the road. Unfortunately, there is incredible, terrible flooding in the area. As we drove through Missouri, we saw entire fields under ... read more

This was our last morning at Isle Royale National Park. I felt a little sad leaving. The kids had been amazing on the trip, and I just felt so proud of the kids for how adventurous they've been. Isle Royale National Park isn't the easiest park to get to, and it's one of the least visited in the national park system. For these reasons, I can't help but wonder if and when we'll get back. We spent the morning doing short hikes around the lodge. The kids also picked out souvenir books from the little gift shop. Joanna got North Woods Girl, and Oliver got Do Beavers Need Blankets? We listed to one last ranger talk before boarding our ferry and heading back to Copper Harbor. Thankfully, the ferry back was once again uneventful. We had ... read more

We started out this morning by hiking on the Stoll Memorial Trail. There's an easy version of the loop that is about 4 miles around. We did that loop and hiked about two miles east of Rock Harbor and then looped around heading 2 miles back but on the northern side of the island. On our way, we saw some other visitors in canoes. We also saw a lot of evidence of moose: tracks and peeled bark on the trees. We never actually saw one, though. Instead of looping back early to keep the hike short, you can do a longer loop on the Stoll Memorial Trail and actually head to the far east part of the island to Scoville Point. I heard there are lovely views there, but we didn't make it that far. The ... read more

Today is our first full day at Isle Royale. We decided to pick up where we left off yesterday and hiked to Suzy’s Cave. It’s 1.8 miles to Suzy’s Cave, and the trail is a loop. We could walk the 3.6 miles and see something new the whole way. We started by going counter-clockwise, and this part of the hike was more forested and followed the shore on the northern part of the peninsula. There were only a few patches of mud and a few inclines. It was a moderately easy hike. We arrived at Suzy’s Cave, and it was unique compared to its surroundings. The cave had an entrance on both sides. The side closest to us was harder to access. On the opposite side, we just strolled right in. Raspberry and thimbleberry bushes surrounded ... read more

Nervous would be an understatement. Last time Andrew and I were in a small boat for an extended period of time, everyone on it got seasick. Vomit was splashing over everyone, and I’d considered jumping overboard to end the horrific ordeal. So, that brings us to our boat to Rock Harbor at Isle Royale. We were going with our two kids, and I was having nightmares of our kids getting that seasick on the trip over. We got Dramamine. The waves were low, so I started each kid with a quarter tablet. Oliver swallowed his, but Jo would not. I went in the store on shore and found some chewables. Thankfully, that worked better for Jo. I then started worrying about the cold if we spent a lot of time outside, spewing over the railing. I ... read more

Today, our plan was to drive through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on our way to Copper Harbor. We hit a few snags with Google Maps and ended up bypassing the national lakeshore, and I didn’t realize it until we were on the western end of it. We opted to drive into the area to see a few sites on the western side before turning around and heading back out the way we came in. We stopped first at Munising Falls, which is a nice stop for a road trip. It’s easy to park, use restrooms, and take a stroll up to the water falls. It’s shaded and beautiful. From there, we drove to Miners Castle. It's a rock formation that's stunning against the beach and colorful rocks below. If you've ever seen advertisements for Pictured Rocks, ... read more

Yesterday, after a late breakfast, we crossed the Mackinaw Bridge and drove into the Upper Peninsula. Our surroundings quickly turned to forest and soon wilderness. There were almost no signs of people, and any shops we did see were closed down. On our drive to Tahquamenon Falls, I think we saw two gas stations and a small handful of dilapidated buildings. I was thankful we'd filled our tank in Mackinaw City because there really wasn't much to stop at for quite a distance. I’d made reservations for us to camp in the Lower Falls area of Tahquamenon. Portage was the name of our campground area, and it was only about a mile hike to the Lower Falls. Unfortunately for us, the temperatures were unusually warm for the area. It was over 90 degrees! So, we chose ... read more

We stayed overnight at Mackinac Island, and the process to get here couldn't be easier. At Shepler's Ferry in Mackinaw City, we were told to pull into a loading section. Some of Shepler's crew came over to the car to get our bags, and we walked over to a tent to buy our ferry tickets and overnight parking pass. We put the pass in the dash and parked in the lot, not far from the ferry. The whole process probably took 15 minutes, and then we caught the ferry just before it left. It took another 15 minutes to get to the island. So, really, from the time we pulled in to the time we stepped off the ferry in Mackinac Island was about a half hour to 45 minutes. Easy, peasy! The only hiccough we ... read more

We've had fun camping at our KOA, and the kids got to do fun activities like pan for gems & gold, ride a "train," play oversized chess, and watch family movies. Still, we're looking forward to a real bed tonight at our inn at Mackinac Island. We set out early and opted to take the more scenic route through the state. We drove through forest and along lake shores. We were charmed by the little town of Charlevoix. We giggled at the next town, Bay Harbor, that seemed very elite and had a country club, equestrian club, yacht club, and golf club all in a row. There were a number of Victorian homes along our drive, and homes overflowing with flowers. We passed countless numbers of cherry orchards. In all, we were enchanted by this stretch ... read more

I wasn't able to reserve a campsite at Sleeping Bear Dunes last fall (they must fill up quickly!), so we booked a site at Traverse City KOA Holiday in Buckley, Michigan. It's nearly an hour from Sleeping Bear, but it ended up being a great fit for us. The KOA was well run and had plenty of family activities. That meant we could "rough it" when we wanted, but we could still do things like family movie nights, swim in the pool, and play giant chess games. On Friday, we decided to set out for the dunes. My friend Mona was staying nearby with some family, so she and the kids met us at Glen Haven beach. On our way there, we stopped at Glen Lake picnic area to eat our sandwiches and enjoy a nice ... read more
