Monday 6th October Beautiful morning at Glendhu Bay, near Wanaka, and we spent the first few hours doing mundane things such as washing and preparing the van. Then on the road to the Rob Roy Glacier, termed the jewel of the Mt Aspiring National Park. We travelled about 50km from where we campedat Lake Glendhu, the last 30km on a good gravel road through farm country and very scenic. About 6km from the end cars were parked at the side of a shallow stream. As the bottom looked hard and the water wasn't too deep we continued through, this occurring several times to our destination. A group of 4 hikers thumbed us down and we gave them a lift. They had left their car with the others. Three guys and a lady, from Switzerland,Germany, England and ... read more

Wednesday 8th October It rained heavily from about 0400 and both of us had a fitful night. On our way and first stop was just up the road, Fox Glacier. A short walk got us to the observation area but when we saw others in the distance near the foot of the glacier we ducked under the marker tape and moved quickly along a rockfall area, keeping our eyes peeled. On our return this section was open so it couldn't have been too bad. After a bit of fun trying to get across streams of gushing cold water we managed to get very near the glacier. Rags was a little worried about ice-falls because of the rainy conditions, so Judy didn't get close enough to actually touch it. Looking at some posters later we could see ... read more

Saturday 4th October It was still raining when we awoke so we set off headed for Queenstown about 150kms away. As the rain didn't abate we didn't stop at Lumsden where we were going to do some shopping and refuel. Instead we continued on and until 10kms before Kingston we saw the Kingston Flyer, a vintage steam train, just about to leave on its journey back. This gave us enough time to take a few photos of this fine old machine. Queenstown, set on Lake Wakatipu, is what you would expect for a tourist town on the snowfields and in the mountains. This is called the 'action' town in that it has all the thrill type activities such as bungy jumping, a luge track, a gondola to get to these, jet boating, parasailing you name it. ... read more

Wednesday 1st October What a night! At 0300 we were woken by strong winds, heavy rain, occasional lightning with the accompanying thunder. The van was buffeted by the strong winds and rain and we dozed fitfully, expecting to wake up with water all around the van and having problems getting out. No worries, daylight brought a few puddles and no hassle driving out. Rags battled the wind gusts which hammered the van, and was happy to take a break in Invercargill, where we found a Countdown store. There was a New World store there but Judy wanted to see if they had different specials. Nothing great, just mushrooms and broccoli! They didnʼt sell wine there so we decided to go “dry” for a few days (except for the scotch & Coke we have). After refuelling in ... read more

Sunday 28th September Great nightʼs sleep but very cold when we awoke. Judy risked it and went for a jog up the beach for an hour or so. Rags meanwhile had a couple of hot coffees whilst watching the local birdlife and scanning the beach. Sometimes having an injury has advantages! Moeraki Boulders was our first stop, quite different but still a bit disappointing from what we had been led to believe. From here we continued to Shag Point where the road in was lined with beach huts of all descriptions. Most of them were tiny, either the families who stayed in them got on very well or else they put up tents around them. The point itself was interesting but there was no animal life around that we saw. Big patches of kelp dotted the ... read more

Thursday 25th September We were picked up by our airport transfer, Luxury Airport Shuttle, just after 1130 and by 1400 we were at the Auckland International Airport. It was a smooth flight to Christchurch and we were picked up and taken to the nearby Sudima Hotel a few minutes after advising them of our arrival. We were quite impressed with our room, large, modern, well worth what we paid. Hotel.com does give you a good bargain. We caught the bus into Christchurch, walking one stop further than the one outside the hotel on the advice of a local, saving us $5 each. We have noticed on several occasions now that the tourist is certainly made to pay here! Cathedral Square was our destination, this considered the centre of the city. Very pretty, nice cathedral and buildings ... read more

Wednesday 24th September Yesterday was a day of recovery, both tired and Rags' foot painful. We did go for quite a long walk around the neighbourhood in the morning, especially alongside the estuary. In the afternoon we went to Fernland Spa where we soaked in hot mineral waters for about 30 mins before both having a deep tissue massage. This was most enjoyable and we felt much better afterwards. Today was a day of preparation as we leave for the North Island tomorrow. Besides washing and packing we set about the task of cleaning both the house and the car. This was after Judy went for an hour long jog around the bay, coming back with wet shoes from jogging on the sand at low tide. She was so happy that she didn't have any ... read more

Friday 19th September Today we set off on what will probably be the last section of our exploring of the North Island. Just before we reached Rotorua we visited the Kiwi Encounter facility which is a working hatchery and nursery, kiwis being hatched and nurtured here until they are old enough to be released into the wild where they came from. The eggs are actually taken from the nests of wild birds. This is done as the survival rate otherwise is very low. It was an interesting hour or so, we being shown eggs hatching as well as live animals in the nocturnal room. Each bird is fitted with a microchip so that they may be monitored in the wild, details of their breeding also being kept. Lunch was on the bank of Lake Rotorua, followed ... read more

Wednesday, 17th September Waihi was the destination for today, about 40kms north of here. This pastoral town was brought back to life by the reopening of the Martha goldmine by Newmont Mining in 1987 after being closed in 1952. About 6 mine shafts were taken by a huge open cut mine. This hole will reach a depth of 250m before they stop mining, allowing it gradually fill with water to form a lake. Natural filling will take an estimated 23 years but by diverting the local rivers at their peak it should be full within 5. The town itself was attractive, well set up and the i site very helpful and informative. After a picnic lunch overlooking the mine (after a long walk around half of the mine as Judy wants to increase her fitness ;-( ... read more

Tuesday 16th September This was to be a day of rest! After a couple of loads of washing, an hour or so of Judy dusting and vacuum cleaning we were on the road again. This time our objective was to climb Mt Maunganui, an extinct volcano near Tauranga. Last week when we were there it was covered in haze as was the surrounding countryside. Today was the perfect day with hardly a cloud in the sky, no wind and the temperature in the low 20s. We set off on the ocean side of the mountain, up steps from the beach. We passed through green paddocks with many sheep in them. Rags had difficulty getting the sheep into a photo, they seemed very nervous of humans!!! After explaining he was an Australian they paused long enough for ... read more
