Derby 11- 18th August We arrived back in Derby late on Tuesday after farewelling Steve and Kerry at Bell Gorge. We went to let Lorrain and Brett know we were back and they invited us to join them for a roast meal. Roast pork and vegies. Yum! Kerry and Steve arrived back in Derby on Wednesday afternoon. We had already checked with Loraine that it was ok for them to stay at the block which they did overnight before departing for Broome on Thursday. The next couple of days were spent washing, cleaning and sorting out the Jeep. On Friday Judy went and helped Lorrain out in the Toy shop she owns. This involved setting up an Excel spreadsheet to work out some new prices for trampolines and making up some signs with prices for them. ... read more

31st July - 11th August Once again with acknowledgment of input both of text and photos from Kerry and Steve Waking early with the symphony of birds in the camp grounds Kerry and Judy walked, we showered washed clothes and had decamped soon after 8am, much earlier than planned. This gave us time to replenish supplies in Coles before we returned and Steve hitched up the camper trailer while the girls collected the washing all before check out time. We later found that Kerry had left some of her washing as other people had put theirs around hers and she missed a row of washing. Our lunch stop was at the Emma Gorge picnic area. Nearby we also purchased our Wilderness passes which enabled us to be on the El Questro property for the next 7 ... read more

20 - 30th July 2009 Thanks to our guest bloggers Kerry and Steve for help with text and authorship of some photos. After taking ages in a conga line at the fuel depot in Derby to get discount diesel we finally got to Woolworths where Steve sweet talked staff into selling them vodka before the official opening time of 12 noon. We were finally on our way after Steve and Kerry met someone they knew from Denmark. What a small world! Windjana Gorge, a 3.5 kilomtere gorge tunneled out of the Napier Range by the waters of the Lennard River, was our destination for today and after putting up our camper and tent we relaxed through the heat of the day before going for a stroll through the gorge in the late afternoon. A shady walk ... read more

We arrived in Derby early Saturday morning and our first stop was the Visitors’ Centre. Judy had already been in touch with her step sister Lorrain and had an address. We discovered this was right across the road from the Visitors’ Centre. Lorrain was at work in her Toy Shop, aptly named Sparkies Toyshop (her and her husband also own an electrical business) when we dropped in to say hello. She gave us a key to the gate of the block where we were to park the caravan so we dropped off the caravan before checking out a local Saturday market. Here we found some lunch at a Chinese Stall. The afternoon we spent at a local event, mud football on the marsh. This was great fun as we’d never seen anything like it before and ... read more

Broome Our first afternoon in Broome was spent replacing the jockey wheel, restocking at the shops and a quick drive around. Our first stop on the second day was Gantheaume Point where at very low tides dinosaur footprints can be seen. As the tide was up, these were underwater but we did enjoy amazing rock formations and observation of the ospreys around their nest on the lighthouse. From Gantheaume Point we followed a dusty red dirt road past Reddell beach to the Port of Broome where we parked and walked out on the Deep Water Jetty where several people were trying to catch the elusive barrumundi that feed here at certain times. Cable Beach was our next stop. This being a large expanse of sand dotted with sunworshippers and a few swimmers. This has become a ... read more

We arrived in Marble Bar around lunch time and went straight to Peter and Marreta’s to pick up our wine that had been delivered from “Get Wines Direct”. We were soon made to feel at home. We combined the makings of a cooked lunch with the Banes and had a wonderful cook up for lunch. An invitation was extended to us to stay for a BBQ that night to farewell Heather as she had decided to take up a job offer in Canada and was leaving at the end of term. A great night was had by all which meant that Sunday was a very sedate day. During the evening David offered us another 2 days work at Marble Bar School which we accepted. This became 3 days during the first day. Judy had almost 3 ... read more

Nullagine 21-27th June After a leisurely drive we arrived in Nullagine about lunch time which gave us plenty of time to set up camp at the Nullagine Tourist Park. Although we’d met the managers previously we found them quite abrupt. When we commented about the small size of the caravan site we were told “ If you don’t like it perhaps Mitchell can find you somewhere else!” Mitchell is the new principal at Nullagine Remote Community School. After lunch we wandered across the road to catch up with Mitchell and found him at the school. He told us Dianne would sort out a timetable for us the next morning at school and left us to check our email. The following morning we arrived at the school to find the teacher of the Year 3-7 on sick ... read more

We thought we wouldn’t have enough new material to write about Marble Bar but we discovered places we hadn’t been before. We pulled into the Caravan Park just after lunch. It was obvious immediately that things were different with the new owners. We were told to park anywhere we liked so we spent some time deciding on our preferred aspect. It was interesting to see little caravans in spots best for the larger vans. Hopefully a big van won't come in and not be able to park! Working at the school almost felt like we hadn’t been away with most of the children remembering us from last year. There have been some staff changes and in fact Judy discovered on the first day that the new young Canadian teacher was there because of an email she’d ... read more

Exmouth After lunch in Carnarvon we decided to divert to the Blowholes as Judy had never been this way before. We were glad we did as the water spout and coastline were quite spectacular with the steep cliffs and the surf surging against it. The camp area here stretches for several kilometres and we were astounded by the number of caravanners and shacks here. We felt the shacks really lowered the tone of the area and hopefully they’ll be removed soon as they have been elsewhere along the coast. After travelling for about a kilometre past caravans and campers we eventually found an empty spot where we could stop. It was only early so we set out to explore the beach and nearby area. At 7.30am the next morning, we left and headed back to ... read more

We bade farewell to Geraldton soon after school finished and headed north. Just on dark we made camp in the bush opposite Billabong Roadhouse. Even though our book said we could camp here there was a sign that said “No Camping”. It was too late to care and we were in the company of at least one other camper. After an early takeoff we arrived at Hamelin Bay where we viewed the stromatolites which exist there. The weather was perfect and we loved the walk down to the bay past the ancient shell brick quarry. From here we continued to Whalebone Bay where we arranged through the Shark Bay Discovery Centre to stop for the night. Here we met another couple, Ross and Toni who were enjoying the fishing at this delightful spot. We unhitched the ... read more
