This morning our aim was to go in to Edinburgh and do some sightseeing after yesterday's lost opportunity. Wayne did some research and found a train station called Wallyford which is less than 10 minutes drive from Carberry, where we're staying. The train from Wallyford is an 11 minute run in to the main station Edinburgh (Waverley), 2nd stop Edinburgh (Waverley). While waiting on the platform an express train that doesn't stop at Wallyford went through and just about blew us off our feet. While on the platform we were talking to a local who reminded Wayne of one of his Budget work colleagues in Tasmania. He was very informative telling us about the local area and also his upbringing in Edinburgh. A really nice man and a pleasure to talk to. Once we arrived at ... read more

This morning's breakfast was a crash down to Earth from what we've been having, buffets of all sorts of goodies, to good old Corn Flakes and toast. After breakfast the group were heading in to Edinburgh to explore the city together. These plans soon changed as the roadworks and traffic split the two cars we were travelling in so Vicki and Wayne escaped Edinburgh's traffic snarl and headed to the country. We were going to go to St Andrews but we actually ended up almost in Glasgow, a right turn Clyde moment if there has been one. By the time we realized Wayne's best mate, Google Maps, had taken us on an adventure it was lunchtime. We ended up finding a Scottish nursery chain called Dobbies that had a café under the same roof. Food was ... read more

This morning we bid goodbye to Casa Corner B&B and Aalborg. While located close to the town centre the room we had was really stuffy and Denmark's weather has been really hot and the Danes are just not equipped to weather more akin to Brisbane. We did say farewell to the Danish couple that we met earlier in their stay and they wish us safe travels. Our taxi was booked for 8:30 and at 8:28 we went outside just as he pulled up, perfect timing. The taxi was a VW people mover, enter through a middle sliding door. The driver asked Wayne to let him know when the coast was clear so he could reverse out on to the busy main thoroughfare in to the South of Aalborg. When Wayne give him the good to go ... read more

After our breakfast we walked to the Aalborg Museum of Modern Art for some culture. Unfortunately the museum wasn't for us, bit too "modern" if you know what I mean. We then walked to the bus stop and boarded and hopped on the number 1 bus to Nytorv near the waterfront in Aalborg to go to the Utzon Centre. This is a museum dedicated to the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, born in Aalborg in April 1918, famous in Australia for designing the Opera House on Sydney Harbour. We've been very impressed by the level of service from our bus drivers, all very friendly and very good drivers to boot. We've also been impressed with the technology of the buses, with their air bags dropping to make for a very small step for the less mobile to ... read more

Another day of trekking through the beautiful town of Aalborg awaits us. First we met up with the Danish couple we spoke about yesterday and then the new arrivals, a couple from The Netherlands that were only staying here last night as they were off on a cruise to Norway at lunchtime today. After breakfast we walked in to the town centre to get a bus to Lindholm Hoje (pronounced Lind home hoy) a Viking burial site dating back to AD400, nearly 1,400 years before Captain Cook discovered Australia. To get to the town centre we walked through the park at the rear of the Cultural Centre called Kildeparken. It is said to be the oldest park in Aalborg, over two hundred years old. The park is beautifully kept and manicured and basically free of rubbish ... read more

A hearty breakfast at the B&B as well as introductions to our host and another couple who are staying here who live outside of Copenhagen. Time to explore the town Wayne's father was born and raised in till he was 19 and migrated to Australia. Another wrong turn, wouldn't mind a dollar for every one of those we've done while in Europe, saw us turn a leisurely 8 minute stroll in to 15 minutes of dodging trucks, buses, cars and of course bicycles. It did enable a photo opportunity of Aalborg Station so it was not without its use. We also found the main bus interchange for the area. There are no metro trains in Aalborg, the town isn't big enough and looking at the number of people on the buses they are well patronized and ... read more

Last night we went for dinner at our hotel, the AC Marriott Bella Center, at their Basalt Restaurant. Their food is all cooked on charcoal priding themselves on fire and their use of local produce a lot of which is grown for them directly off the farm. The meal was outstanding, a shared piece of Nordic Beef cooked on the charcoal and desserts and coffee were equally outstanding. The amusing part was our waiter, for the sake of this blog let's just refer to him as Manuel as in the 70's television show Fawlty Towers. While our Manuel was not Spanish, he was in fact born in Greece but has lived extensively throughout Europe. His mannerisms were classic Manuel, fluttering from table to table without actually achieving anything. He did recommend us a beautiful Italian Sangiovese ... read more

This morning we woke to a nice day, a little cloudy with some hints of showers to our North. Breakfast was muesli in our hotel room after Wayne's heroics of yesterday to track down a couple of bowls and being an ideas man coming up with the Starbucks spoons. We slept in a bit this morning, not getting up till nearly 9am. Off on the metro like a couple of pros that soon turned to amateur hour as we'd board what we thought was a Copenhagen Central train but turned out to be the M1. We disembarked at Norreport as we remembered it from our hop on/off tour from yesterday. It's about this point we realized yes the bus tour came through here but where on earth do we catch it from - error! We ended ... read more

Apologies in advance for the long blog entry. Thursday 30 August 2018 We woke to a wet Copenhagen, the first real sign of rain since we've been in Europe. Vicki has a pretty nasty cold and Wayne is still getting over his. After breakfast at the hotel we caught a taxi to a laundromat in suburban Copenhagen, nothing within walking distance of the hotel. Once there we had a crash course in laundry the Danish way as well trying to break the Da Vinci code that is the Danish language and nothing in the laundromat was in English. Once the washing was on Wayne went for a wander to find some water. Eventually finding a pizza shop with an Italian owner who spoke Italian/Danish but not a word of English Wayne got some water and headed ... read more

This morning was very much bittersweet. Saying goodbye to Daniel, Gabi had left work before we got up and we'd said our goodbye to her last night, and his beautiful home and country in Switzerland for the next leg of our journey through Europe to Copenhagen in Denmark. Another new language to master and even harder is converting Danish Krone to Aussie Dollars. We caught a train from the town of Olten about 20 or 30 minutes from Daniel and Gabi's. Daniel was good enough to not only take us to the station but also wait to ensure we boarded the right train. He was then off to work in his office, the company he works for designs and engineers the roads in Switzerland and they do a top job. The road network is almost as ... read more
