After checking out of the Sudima Hotel, near Christchurch Airport, we were away in our faithful RAV 4 (thank you Rodney) headed to Nelson. The staff at the Sudima are first class, always friendly and very helpful. Wayne had been there for the four nights prior and Vicki met him there on Thursday. The roads in New Zealand, if this one is anything to go by, are organized not overly busy and motorists who are generally cruising along enjoying the scenery. Our first stop is at Hanmer Springs around 2 hours North of Christchurch. A really pretty almost alpine like village filled with touristy shops, cafes and friendly locals. There was a market in town as well as a big gathering of Ducati motor bikes, more about them later. After a coffee and a walk around ... read more

Like all good stories this one is coming to an end. To all the people that have read and commented on the blog, thank you! We opted not to reward the Hilton Garden Inn at Frankfurt with any more of our money so opted to instead have breakfast at the airport lounge after we'd checked in and gone through security prior to departure. Check in at Frankfurt was German efficiency with a smile. All checked in we had the usual hassle with security but soon cleared that and then we enjoyed a light breakfast at the Lufthansa Lounge as Etihad share lounge facilities with them. It was now time to head to our departure gate, Terminal 1B gate 60B is now etched in to our memories. It was like boarding a plane from a tin shed ... read more

Being a travel day there will be few photos which will be a relief to anyone who saw yesterday’s photo filled day of fun. This morning we had to check out of the Air BnB by 10am and with our quantity of luggage it wasn't possible for us to do any sightseeing so went to the nearby taxi rank and came straight to the airport despite our flight not being till 3pm. The traffic in Rome, as I've said many times, is chaotic and this morning was no different. Our taxi was piloted by none other than Valentino Rossi's second cousin on his mother's side. Our ride this morning was a Toyota Prius and our driver proved that a Prius, yes a Prius, is capable of speeds up to 150km/hr. The irony is at no time ... read more

After a more "normal" breakfast of juice, muesli and coffee we were off on our adventures. Today's weather was forecast to be some of the nicest we've had on our holiday, fine and sunny with a maximum of 25 degrees. This will be a welcome relief to the mid 30s and high humidity that Italy has thrown at us thus far. We walked from our Air BnB to stop 5 on the hop on/off bus at Piazza Venezia via the ruins out the front, an ATM, a fountain and more ruins. We got a better photo of the ruins near our Air BnB as well as a couple of the resident stray cats for our friends Julz Storey and others who are slightly cat obsessed. Wayne is still nursing his injured calf which has improved a ... read more

For breakfast this morning we had cold meat and cheese from the local grocery store. We were going to have cereal but the local doesn't sell it only cold meats, cheeses and every kind of alcohol you can think of. After breakfast we walked across the road to catch a bus to get us somewhere near the Vatican. The Sun was shining directly on to the ticket machine so we gave that up and ended up buying a 48 hour hop on/off bus ticket from a street vendor near the bus station. When asked where the bus stop was he said follow me I'll show you a shortcut. So off we head with our Bangladeshi Segway pilot with Wayne hobbling along behind and Vicki trying to act as an intermediate guide between our Segway speedway racer ... read more

We had our normal mediocre breakfast and checked out of the hotel in plenty of time for our 10:40 train to Rome. The station in Florence is crazy at the best of times, standing room (and not a lot) only and definitely nowhere to sit. We got there early, have we mentioned how Wayne likes to be everywhere well beforehand? Standing in the crush in temperatures already in the low 30s was not much fun but our train arrived and as is the way our platform number went up about 10 minutes before. Now the crush turns in to the running of the bulls as everyone heads through the only "security" point. Security being a very loose term as Vicki had our tickets and Wayne went through first taking advantage of being the biggest bull at ... read more

After yesterday's adventure and very long day today was planned to be a lot more leisurely. We had breakfast at the hotel, nothing too much to write about but it was included in the room rate and it beats going hungry. We'd decided to venture on to the hop on/off bus as we'd done previously in Copenhagen, Edinburgh and London. The one in Florence was split in to two routes, line A and line B (very original). Line A started at the main railway station, 5 minute walk from our hotel, and was more concentrated around the old city of Florence took around an hour to do non-stop. Line B was more about the outskirts of the city as well as a run out to Fiesole in the hills to the North of Florence, this route ... read more

Breakfast at the Atlantic Palace was ok but nothing to write a long blog post about. For today's adventure we'd decided to book a Best of Tuscany day tour with Walkabout Tours. Our guide Stefano, a very knowledgeable and charismatic man, and our driver was Antonio, a very professional driver and quite a nice guy too. Our first impressions of Stefano were he was the Italian drill sergeant but once we were on board he was more like Jerry Lewis. He entertained us with his singing and dancing while loading us up on a ton of Italian history throughout the day. Our first port of call on the tour was Siena. Siena is a beautiful city first settled somewhere between 900 and 400 BC. The town centre is world heritage listed and the site of the ... read more

After our change of room at the Palazzetto Pisini Grand Canal we slept well. While the room was a bit warmer than the previous room this one afforded the luxury of a glass cubed shower that you could see in to from any point in the room as well a toilet that was also visible from the wobbly old desk that I was blogging from. It was like being watched during a performance, to the point Vicki was waiting for a round of applause. We checked out of the hotel and bumped in to a German couple that we'd met as we were leaving dinner last night. We walked down a narrow street with them on our way to San Samuelle pier. It was already high 20s and humid so we sat in the shade and ... read more

After yesterday's difficulties Wayne was fed up and ready to go to Florence. Check the train app, plenty of availability, and then a call to our hotel in Florence and we were told sorry the hotel is full tonight but we'll see you tomorrow night. There went Wayne's plans of getting out of Venice! Down to reception we go to sort out our room. The receptionist must have known we were in no mood for discussion, just get us moved. She offered to show us a room on the first floor. Just as were about to go a young couple from the US were checking out. He was of similar height and slighter frame as Wayne so Wayne showed him the shoe in the shower photo. He was astounded and said get the suite we just ... read more
