Another beautiful breakfast of cheese, cold meats, fresh bread and coffee. Daniel and Gabi have spoilt us and we never want to leave this beautiful country! This morning we headed to Lucerne, Wayne fully recovered from his motion sickness of yesterday and Vicki with her cold. The drive to Lucerne is around 30 minutes on a wonderful 4 lane freeway, 2 lanes in each direction. Daniel and Gabi knew of a parking station not far from the Reuss River that separates the old and new town of Lucerne. The river is crystal clear and quite free flowing but controlled by a dyke that can be opened up depending on rainfall or I assume snow melts as well. The bridges are beautiful wooden structures. Interesting with different heights of the handrails. Daniel pointed out the high side ... read more

After a great night's sleep we were greeted by Daniel and Gabi with a traditional Swiss breakfast of cold meat, cheeses, bread and coffee. A great start to our first full day touring this beautiful country. Our first stop today was at Wyher Castle. The castle was built in the late 1200s as there is a register acknowledging the castle as far back as 1304. The castle is a traditional castle with a draw bridge, lookout towers and a moat. The castle is now used as function centre for birthdays, weddings etc. We then headed for the hills, well alps. Enroute to Burgenstock, in the lower Swiss Alps altitude 1,000m, we stopped at a convenience store for some water prior to climbing the "hill". On the way up the hill with its multitude of bends Wayne ... read more

This morning we bid farewell to Rosemary, 52 Clichy (our Parisian home) and Paris. Our taxi was booked for 7:45am and arrived at 7:43. The travel to Charles De Gaulle Airport was very smooth. A bit of congestion around the airport which is typical of large cities. We found the taxis in Paris to be spotlessly clean, the drivers friendly enough (they don't talk while they're driving which is fair enough given the chaos they have to work within) and very efficient. We flew with Swiss Air from Paris to Zurich. The check in queue was lengthy but fortunately we'd checked in on line the previous day so were taken from the long queue to a very short queue and we were able to check our luggage very efficiently. Then it was off to our gate ... read more

Another healthy breakfast at 52 Clichy, our Paris home with our host Rosemary. From there the healthy part of living kind of went downhill, more on that later. We boarded the 13 Metro at Liege and headed for the Louvre-Rivoli station. We passed through this station yesterday and it caught our attention with its many sculptures, copies of their originals. At Liege we found a couple of English tourists who were asking each other the same questions we were only a few days earlier. We asked them if they'd like any help and they gratefully declined saying they were ok. From Louvre-Rivoli we headed to Printemps via the 21 Bus. On disembarking the bus we found some bling for Vicki, see the photo. By this stage it was time for coffee and ok there may have ... read more

Another great healthy breakfast with Rosemary at 52 Clichy B&B before heading out for the day. Our first stop was Notre Dame, we're old hands on the Paris Metro now and got there including a change of train without any issue. On the way to Notre Dame we stopped at Pont D'Arcole for a photo of the Seine River. A great view on top of the bridge before walking up to Notre Dame. A wonderful building but as is the Paris way plenty of people and very long lines but extremely detailed and wonderful architecture. Following a very nice lunch at Soliel D'or on Boulevard St Michel we boarded a metro bus for the Louvre. More stunning architecture and a great chance to just sit and take in more of the Paris atmosphere. After the Louvre ... read more

Wayne's man flu is now in full on mode and is knocking him about quite a lot. He is not enjoying Paris, way too noisy and way too busy for his laid back way of life. Vicki is enjoying Paris a lot and has now sorted out her SIM card issues and now has a 30EUR SIM with 12GB data and call inclusions. Neither of us can ring Australia on our SIMs at this stage but we'll try and work that out as we go and see what we can do. This morning's adventure was to find a chemist for some Strepsils for Wayne, called Strefen in France. After doing that we then ventured to the Paris Metro (underground trains). After getting on at the wrong station, we were looking for the 13 and was on ... read more

After another great breakfast we headed out to resolve Vicki's SIM card issues. In our haste to leave the hotel we never took our passports so we were unable to get anywhere. We'll resolve this in Paris one way or the other. Wayne has picked up a sore throat and runny nose so we found a chemist and got some drugs to get this sorted before it turns to full blown man flu, as no travel insurance known to mankind covers for that. While we were out in Mainz we also got a hat for Vicki and a cap and sunglasses for Wayne. His sunnies died a cruel death on the way over. Back to the Hilton Mainz to check out and get a cab to Mainz HBF for the train to Mannheim then on to ... read more

There weren't a lot of photos today so if you're looking for pictures this is not the blog post for you. Today has been a great day besides a pretty ordinary start with Vicki's SIM card ripping us off to the tune of $60 for 120MB of data. The SIM was with Woolworths Global Roaming and my advice to you, from our lesson learnt, do not touch them with a barge pole unless you want to be similarly ripped off. We tried to find a Vodafone shop in Mainz and had a fairly hard time of that and in the end we had to give up as Ingelise, Wayne's aunty, was picking us up about 5 minutes after we found the shop. Enough of the negative and to some really nice positives. After meeting Ingelise at ... read more

After enjoying a great breakfast at the hotel we caught a cab, Mercedes, to Mainz hbf (Hautbahnhof or main station in English). Buying a ticket on the train is fairly simple as the machines are in multiple languages. The trick is being able to find the right platform but it is also pretty easy once you work out the time of the day and what train number you're on. Also if in doubt ask the staff at the information booths as they understand English. We needed to be in Frankfurt for Ingelise's (Wayne's aunty) arrival at 10:30 and we were there in plenty of time. We'd heard of the ticketing officers who will gladly charge you 60 EUR if you don't have ticket. Today we met them. We were sitting on the train to Frankfurt and ... read more

After getting to the hotel I phoned my aunty, Ingelise (my late dad's younger sister), who lives near Darmstadt and who we will be catching up with Monday and Tuesday. Firstly to let her know we arrived and to confirm our meeting location and time but also to make sure my phone was working ok. We're meeting her in Frankfurt Monday morning, she said she is going to meet us on our arriving platform. She sounded very excited about us being here and it will be great to see her as we haven't seen her since she came to Australia over 7 years ago. The first part of our walking tour was along the esplanade on the edge of the Rhine River. A beautiful walk watching boats passing by and nice to just be outside on ... read more
