Just a very quick update before bed. We met in the lobby a bit after 6:30 (it seems someone is always late) and then we walked along the river into the tourist area of Siem Riep called "Pub Street". It was a pleasant walk, it seems the rain has cooled things off a bit. The town is very touristy, of course, but it is still quite small and it was pretty along the river with all the lights (it was dark during the walk). We noticed some very nice hotels on the drive in earlier today. Sowann pointed out the various markets and then we went for a group dinner to "The Corner" restaurant where we both had Amok (the Cambodian national dish I think). I had fish and Susan had chicken. It was really delicious. ... read more

Greetings from Cambodia! It's about 5 pm and we have some free time before we meet our group at 6:30 for an orientation walk into town and dinner. It has been a long travel day. We left our hotel in Bangkok this morning at 6 am, then drove for an hour and a half or so before stopping at kind of a gas station/rest stop where we got some delicious iced coffee at Amazon Coffee (it's evidently a chain because we stopped at one on our way back from Ayutthaya too), and some snacks for breakfast at 7-11. (Thailand is full of 7-11s). Plus to use the "happy loo" (Sowann calls bathrooms the happy loo). This one was the fairly standard Southeast Asian squat variety which is ok once you get used to it. We then ... read more

Another awesome day in Bangkok! But first I wanted to mention yesterday's tour company, Asian Trails. It is a great company. We booked the tour easily online, and they left a message with the hotel to remind us of the pick up time the day before. Our tour guide and driver were both excellent, and the vehicle was very comfortable. We were kept supplied with cold bottled water and cold towelettes. Great service. Oh, and a correction to yesterdays's entry: the tree the Buddha head is entwined in in Ayutthaya is a banyan tree, not a bodhi tree (I don't think there is actually such a tree). So, on to today. We met Gof from Intepid Urban Adventures at 8:30 this morning, along with another member of our Best of Cambodia and Vietnam tour, Sondra (from ... read more

What a full day we had today! We were up at 6:15 this morning, had breakfast in the hotel, then our guide picked us up for our day tour to Bang Pa-In and Ayutthaya. It took about an hour or so to drive out of Bangkok to Bang Pa-In, which is the Royal summer residence. It was built mostly in the 1800s by King Rama V, who was interested in European style architecture. It is still used occasionally today. You can see from the pictures we were lucky with the weather again. It was a beautiful sunny day. The Royal summer residence is beautiful, with many different styles of buildings, in a lovely park-like setting. From Bang Pa-In we drove to Ayutthaya, which was the former capital of Siam, founded 1350. It is mostly ruins today, ... read more

We've arrived in Bangkok! It's just before 1 pm and we have checked into the Viengtai Hotel for our three nights here. Basic room but spacious and has a fridge which is handy. Susan is in the shower now and the water pressure is good. We had arranged transfer from the airport to the hotel with Intrepid and the driver was waiting as arranged. We went through immigration quickly. We got to the hotel before normal check in time so we had a short wait for our room - 5 minutes only but we decided to have a quick beer - I like Chang beer best so far ... Oh did I mention it is HOT here. As soon as we left the A/C of the airport the heat and the humidity just smacked into us. ... read more

We have made it as far as the Vancouver airport! We are relaxing in the Premium Lounge, having a beer, before our 2 am flight to Hong Kong. Susan got a deal on the lounge passes on Groupon and I'm glad she did. It's a nice way to start our trip. It's quiet here, there is lots of comfortable seating and food and drink. Our cats are in good hands with our catsitter Ni. We're so glad she's staying in our place taking care of the cats while we're away. Ella knew something was up because of the suitcases. She always hides when visitors come but she came out when before we left so we know she'll be ok with Ni while we're away. Our friend and neighbour Myron drove us to the airport - thanks ... read more

Well, we're on the countdown now. Two weeks to go. We are getting very excited! I am practicing with the iPad mini keyboard. It's so small it's a bit hard to get used to. This is just a practice entry to make sure this blogging thing will work. I've never done it before. I took a couple of pictures on our camera, used the new cable to transfer them to the ipad, now I'll see if I can attach them to this entry. We've got the necessary visas, and booked various tours before and after the tour. In case you didn't know, we are on Intrepid Adventures 18 day tour "Best of Cambodia and Vietnam". We start in Bangkok, where we have a couple of extra days. The tour ends in Hanoi, where we have one ... read more

Greetings from the Heathrow airport once again - this time we area waiting for our flight to Vancouver and home. We had a leisurely morning getting all our things packed up and ready to go. We took some photos of the kids in their school uniforms as they were heading off to school. We enjoyed a very nice fish and chip lunch at a nearby pub with Carol Ann, then we headed to the airport. It is about 4:30 now and we are waiting at our gate for our 5:15 pm flight. It's about a 9 1/2 hour flight to Vancouver. I can't believe that we will be home tonight! Well, tonight Vancouver time, tomorrow London time. It seems too soon to finish our trip! Our amazing adventure is over already. I could travel longer - ... read more

We went to the British Museum today and I saw the Rosetta Stone! Yay! I've wanted to see it for ages. It was pretty amazing. It's in a protective case so you can't touch it, but it was so great to finally see it. I remember seeing an exhibit at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria several years ago called "Treasures from the British Museum", and there it was, the Rosetta Stone! I practically sprinted over to it, only to find that it was a replica. I guess the British Museum wasn't letting the real thing out on tour. Anyway, now I have seen it! :) We saw all of the Egyptian exhibits, some of the Greek exhibits (Parthenon), the Ancient Turkey exhibit, and the Easter Islands statues. We were going to see the "Roman Exhibits ... read more

We had an early start this morning, leaving the house at 6:30 am. We walked to the Ealing Broadway station, picked up a coffee and a muffin at Starbucks for breakfast again, and took the tube to Marble Arch. The mini-bus picked us up at Marble Arch and we were off. This is a small group day tour - there are a total of 16 people. It was a cloudy morning, with a little bit of drizzle on and off. We drove through the English countryside to Lacock, an incredibly picturesque village in the Cotswolds. It was a very nice drive, and we passed lots of other lovely villages too (Box for example). Lacock has been used as a movie set numerous times, and is full of beautiful old houses. We had a walking tour of ... read more
