First beer in ThailandFirst beer in ThailandFirst beer in Thailand

Chang beer is the favourite so far.
We've arrived in Bangkok! It's just before 1 pm and we have checked into the Viengtai Hotel for our three nights here. Basic room but spacious and has a fridge which is handy. Susan is in the shower now and the water pressure is good. We had arranged transfer from the airport to the hotel with Intrepid and the driver was waiting as arranged. We went through immigration quickly. We got to the hotel before normal check in time so we had a short wait for our room - 5 minutes only but we decided to have a quick beer - I like Chang beer best so far ... Oh did I mention it is HOT here. As soon as we left the A/C of the airport the heat and the humidity just smacked into us. It is supposed to be the rainy season but it is sunny today, which we are happy about.

After showers (we have been travelling for 24 hours) we headed off to Wat Arun - Temple of the Dawn.

The street our hotel is on, Rambuttri, is jam packed with shops, restaurants, small hotels and vendors.

It was a bit of an adventure but we eventually found Wat Arun, after walking for about 20 minutes to the ferry to take us across the Chao Phraya river, and stopping several times to ask people how to get to the ferry. And getting out of a tuk tuk when the driver kept trying to get us to agree to get taken to someplace else. Tuk tuk drivers are notorious scammers. We were pretty hot and sweaty when we finally got on the ferry but it was a nice way to get to Wat Arun. It is a Buddhist temple with distinctive prangs (spires) in the Khmer style, which are encrusted with pieces of porcelain. The prangs were built in the early 19th century although the temple is apparently much older than that. You can climb the very steep stairs up several levels, though I only made it to the second level. The stairs are crazy steep! Plus we were pretty worn out by then, after the long flight.

We are going across the road to the Green House Restaurant for dinner in a bit, then we will pop into the 7-11 to get some beer (we stopped in to pick up bottled water earlier today but the beer doesn't go on sale until 5 pm for some reason), then I think we will have an early night. Tomorrow we get picked up at 8 am for our day tour to Ayutthaya, which we are looking forward to.

Glad you are having a great time. Your Dad's neighbour, Roger Doyle, frequently takes that trip but for business reasons. He and his daughter went hiking once in the mountains in Thailand. Had lunch with Daddy Dearest yesterday. Don't d
