We had a full day today! After a very nice breakfast at the hotel (probably the nicest breakfast buffet so far), we met the group at 9 am. Susan was feeling much better today and seems to be over her stomach bug. It was a rainy morning, and unlike other days, it has rained on and off all day. Generally just a light rain, but kind of annoying. What can you do, it's the rainy season and no point complaining about the weather. Generally we've been really lucky with the weather. And the forecast for Halong Bay on Friday is for sun! We hopped on the back of motorbikes and whizzed off for our tour. It was quite exciting riding through the streets of Hue on motorbikes. We headed out to the countryside, which was very ... read more

The day started early with Susan and I meeting some of the group at 6:30 this morning for a bicycle ride around Hoi An. It was a nice morning, and we had a fun ride. It was good to get some exercise, and to see the pretty scenery around Hoi An. I tried to take some photos while riding, but soon gave up as it was too difficult to watch where I was going, keep my balance on the somewhat rickety bike, not run into one of the many motorbikes who passed us, and take photos too! There were a lot of water buffalo and I particularly remember one scene I was unable to photograph. There was a big water buffalo in a field surrounded by many fairly large white birds, with one bird riding on ... read more

We've had a nice relaxing day so far in Hoi An. It's about 5 pm and we have some time before meeting the group at 7 pm for dinner (and to celebrate Michelle's 32nd birthday). I didn't mention the drive from Danang to Hoi An yesterday. We were picked up at the Danang railway station in a mini bus and It took about 45 min or so to get to our hotel. There are really beautiful beaches in the Danang area and there are lots of expensive looking resorts along the beach. After I did the blog yesterday afternoon, we showered (it sure was nice to shower after the long train ride, and we were pleased to have both decent water pressure and hot water). We met the group for a late lunch and walk around ... read more

It's about 7:30 am and I'm typing from my top bunk on the Reunification Express, heading to Danang (where we will transfer to Hoi An. Hoi An doesn't have a railway station). We are on the somewhat optimistically named "sleeper" train. Each very small cubicle has four narrow beds, two up and two down as you'll see from the photos. The beds come with a sheet and a comforter and a pillow, but the cleanliness has a lot to be desired. Best not to think about it too much! I slept pretty well here on the top bunk, after the rest of our partying group quieted down about midnight. We brought a six pack of "333" beer on board, and Bryden and Kim (our roomies) had a bottle of Johnnie Walker and others had vodka. I ... read more

Day two in Saigon (it seems locals call the city Saigon rather than Ho Chi Minh City). Today was our day tour with Intrepid's Urban Adventures "Mekong Discovery". Susan and I had booked this day tour from Vancouver for today, which is a free day. Eight of our tour group joined us and we had lots of fun. We got picked up from our hotel this morning at 8 am, and we headed out to the Mekong Delta, about 2 1/2 hours drive. We were pleased it was a sunny morning. The countryside outside Saigon is quite pretty with lush green rice fields. But much more developed than rural Cambodia. After an hour and a half or so, we stopped at the "Mekong Rest Stop" which is a very pretty tourist rest stop, with bathrooms, gift ... read more

We are in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam! We left the Townview 2 Hotel in Phnom Penh this morning about 8 am. We drove in vans to the bus depot, where we boarded the "Mekong Express Limousine Bus" for our journey to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). While not up to limousine standards, it was a pretty comfortable bus, much more comfortable than the mini buses we have been riding in. We were given a bottle of water and two buns each, and off we went. Oh yes, the bus also had a perfectly adequate happy loo, which was much appreciated. The bus staff also take care of passports and border crossing formalities. Plus the Mekong Express has wifi! It is a mostly sunny day today and the scenery was pretty going through Cambodia. Lush green ... read more

Today was a difficult day, as expected. We had breakfast in the hotel this morning, then met the group at 8 am to head out to the Choeung Ek Memorial at the Killing Fields, about an hours drive from our hotel. There is a memorial here to the estimated 3 million people killed by the Khmer Rouge. The memorial stupa is made up of an estimated 8,000 human skulls and marks the site of the infamous Killing Fields. This wasn't the only location where Khmer Rouge victims were killed in large numbers; such places were located all over Cambodia. On the drive to the Memorial Sovann told us about the history of the civil wars in Cambodia and the political situation over the years, and how the Khmer Rouge came to power. His mother lost her ... read more

We've made it to Phnom Penh after a very long drive over extremely bumpy roads! Yesterday we drove from Siem Reap to a village near the Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex for our homestay (about 3 1/2 hrs drive), The scenery through rural Cambodia is very pretty. We passed through little villages on the way. The houses are all on stilts, mostly made of wood (some with a thatched material) and some of concrete. There is almost always several skinny white cows in the yard, sometimes water buffalo. Rural Cambodia memories: green rice fields, water buffalo, palm trees, stilt houses, "Cambodia People's Party" signs, skinny white cows, Buddhist temples, pink water lilies, warm smiles. (The power just went out in our hotel! Hope it comes on soon. I can keep working on the blog though, since ... read more

Another fantastic day! We were up at 3:45 am to meet the group at 4:30 am to get out to Angkor Wat for the sunrise. It was lightly drizzling when we left and unfortunately there really wasn't much of a sunrise because of the heavy cloud cover. However, it was still quite magical to see the towers of Angkor Wat emerge from the darkness. There were big crowds waiting for the sunrise and we had to hold our ground against other overeager photo-taking tourists. Sovann calls these pushy tourists "VIP's" which stands for "very impolite people". VIPs refer to Korean, Japanese, and Chinese tourists. We bought two watercolours from a vendor artist at Angkor Wat. There were lots of people selling stuff, taking advantage of the big sunrise crowds. There are numerous children selling to tourists, ... read more

Today was an amazing day! I can't believe how lucky we are to be here and to see these wonderful sights. We were up early as usual (I have been waking up early and been unable to get back to sleep since our holiday started - I hope one day to get a full night's sleep!). Breakfast is included here and we went up to the 6th floor rooftop restaurant for our breakfast buffet just before 7 am. And it was sunny! We have been unbelievably lucky with the weather, and today was a lovely sunny (of course hot and humid) day. The breakfast was good and the setting was really nice. There is a good view from the rooftop and it was a lovely way to start the day. We met our group at 8 ... read more
