Still sailing for the island of Mandrogi on the Svir river. A number of locks to negotiate including one very large one. Mandrogi was occupied by the Finns in WWII and the villagers were expelled. In the 1990s Russian businessman Gutzeit constructed a replica village in the old Russian style which is visited by both Russian and international tourists. Today it is a living museum. There are demonstrations of old crafts such as doll painting, jewellery making, wood carving and pottery. There is also a vodka museum which contains 2800 brands. For lunch we had a traditional Russian BBQ of shashlick, vegetables and salads . A traditional band of musicians played for us for over an hour. There was a female singer and two males who played the balalaika and accordion. They played traditional music and ... read more

Our cruise begins. After a boring and uneventful drive and border crossing we reached our destination of the Scenic Tsar - our cruise vessel from Saint Petersburg to Moscow. Checkin, orienatation and dinner, the first night complete. We have 4 days here each day jam packed. Our boat is moored about 1/2 hour (1 hour in traffic) from St Petersburg but we are lucky as we are the only boat there. Further away and on the other side of the river is the other boat mooring dock for river cruise ships kwhich we see on the day we leave. There are 13 boats there stacked against one another in groups of five or six. We are very fortunate as we can have our blinds open , use our balcony and relax without another boat next to ... read more

Our trip to Helsinki was a brief one unfortunately. We left Tallinn and boarded the ferry, Business Class of course. Free food and drink for the entire trip. As it was early morning we started with coffee. A smooth ride and a look in the duty free store. We had lunch before we left the boat, as we started our city tour from the pier when we arrived. We visited the abstract Sibelius monument which was very controversial as it looks like organs but Sibelius wrote very little music for organs. The artist placated people by adding the face of Sibelius next to the sculpture. Next we visited the Temppeliaukio “rock” church which was quarried out of the ground. No gold, no icons, just a copper dome, exposed rock walls and concrete beams. It is used ... read more

This morning we visited Kadriog Palace ( Museum of Foriegn Arts) with our guide Nikolai. The Palace was built in 1718 under orders of Peter the Great as a summer residence. While he built many wonderful palaces in St Petersburg he liked smaller places which was unusual as he was 2m 3 cms tall . He also wore size 38 shoes and had small hands, so he had to use walking sticks to assist his balance. It was designed by Italian Nicole Micheti and was supposed to look like an Italian villa. There is a selection of Western European and Russian paintings. The main attraction is the Great Hall which ranks among the finest examples of Baroque decorating styles. There are forested parks, ornamental gardens, statues and ponds to explore. After free time for lunch (we ... read more

On the way today from Lithuania we visited the Hill of Crosses. One of those “if I hadn’t seen it I wouldn’t have believed it” moments. The hill began as an alter for Pagan rituals worshipping nature but when Lithuania concerted to Christianity people started to bring crosses. It is a site where people met during periods of danger. People place crosses there for any special occasion such as births, deaths, marriage. During the Soviet occupation it became a symbol of Christian resistance and the crosses were repeatedly bulldozed and raw sewage was left on it a number of times but each time the locals cleaned it up and then the Soviets gave up. Some wit had placed a special message for Harry and Meaghan’s marriage. Crossed the border into Latvia and our next stop was ... read more

Today we left Poland for Lithuania. We had previously changed some money to Zlotys ( mainly in case we needed to use the toilets) and so as we were heading towards Lithuania we needed to spend it. Found a spot for lunch but still had some money left. It was a Sunday so all the shops were closed except for food and drink outlets. Kevin managed to find a shop that sold wine and the shop assistant found him a suitable red off the top shelf - Jacobs Creek Shiraz Cabernet!!!! Our dinner that night was at the Restaurant Medininkai, in a medieval building near the town square and close to our hotel. City Tour next morning to see the Baroque buildings around town including the Vilnius Cathedral used by the Soviets in the 1950s as ... read more

Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw June 17th 2018

Our Baltic adventure begins. We travelled by train from Berlin to Warsaw in comfortable 6 berth cabins. First class fare included free instant coffee, tea , juice or water once we had crossed the border from Germany to Poland. We passed through mainly rural countryside with vast areas of produce including cherry trees laden with fruit. From the train we saw a Statue of Christ in Swiebodzin, cost $1.5million. The figure is 33 metres tall ( Christ was 33 when crucified), the crown is 3 metres tall and it sits on a mound, so all up it is 52.5 metres overall. Completed in 2010. After a long day we arrived in Warsaw and were taken to our hotel for a quick checkin and change before we went to ... read more

We were last in Berlin in 1979 when the wall was still up; how the city has changed. You are constantly reminded of the deeds of the National Socialists and how many people they murdered. This theme is constantly “in your face” both verbally and visually with the monuments that have been erected. We arrived a day before our tour started, so we went walking and stopped at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe with its amazing 2711 concrete blocks. We also visited the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, (we knew we would be going to the Reichstag for afternoon tea on our tour, so just walked around) passing also the monument to the Romy murdered by the National Socialists. As we had a free day in Berlin on a Tuesday we knew that there ... read more

We left Kolkata on our flight to Singapore. It was uneventful . After arriving at the airport we changed our Indian rupees for Singapore dollars and I was about to order coffees while we waited for our flight. Instead we were called to the Singapore Airlines desk. Our flight was overbooked and as we had a connecting flight in Sydney to Canberra they asked us if we would like to be moved to the direct flight leaving later that night. The compensation would be an upgrade from Premium Economy to Business, access to the Business Lounge, accommodation and meals at the Crowne Plaza airport hotel for the day. We decided to say yes as we had been awake for over 24 hours ( not counting small naps on the plane). We also asked for our bags ... read more

We arrived very late at night after a long day of travelling and were surprised at the lack of traffic but were told that Kolkata closes after about 10 pm. Certainly a pleasant change from the frenetic traffic we had experienced all over India. Another thing we noticed was kerbing on the gutters. For the next two days our guide Khan, took us on a varied tour of Kolkata. First the white town and the buildings of the East India company and other colonials. We started at the magnificent Victoria Memorial built of white marble to commemorate the Queen's diamond jubilee. There are many exhibitions inside but the best is a chronological display of Kolkata's history. The gardens are beautiful as well. Our next stop was St Paul's cathedral was built in 1839-47 and has beautiful ... read more
