Day 9 - a sea day Day 10 - another sea day - wet Weather gets worse as we get closer to Sydney. Preparations today for disembarkation tomorrow. We were given our bag tags and other info. Noticed that there was a possible transfer to Central Station and because of the weather we thought it might be the way to go. Went to guest relations and booked two tickets at $10 pp. Leaves at 7:20 Rest of the day spent packing and relaxing. Day 11 - end of cruise - extremely wet We arrived into Sydney to extremely wet weather. Up early, showered and then off for an early breakfast. Day 8 - humid and sunny We caught the shuttle to the terminal where we caught up with emails because of the free wifi. Walked over to the supermarket to have a look at the goods and their pricing. We confirmed that New Caledonia is expensive. We decided to walk to the NC Museum however it was closed for renovations. We decided to go to a bar near the marina for a rest and a beer. Had another walk through th... read more

Day 7 We were escorted to the tender by Francisco on to a boat and off to Mystery Island. The weather was hot and sunny. We had a couple of swims and Kevin did some snorkelling. I took the goggles and had a look at the fish. Brilliantly coloured and plentiful. Bright purple, yellow and green. Huge coral. Bought another necklace to use up our last Vatu. Gave some kids the pencils that we had bought over. Back to the boat for a shower and lunch. It rained again this afternoon. Went to see the Boys in the Band show. 3 guys singing tributes to male groups eg Franki Vallie, Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel. A great show... read more

Day 6 Walked into town after collecting a map. VERY HUMID. Passed some markets including one person selling BATS . We kept walking and visited the prototype of a WW2 museum with many relics left behind from the US occupation including the very wide road through the centre of town. We gave a donation and walked back towards the boat with the intention of a cold beer at a waterfront cafe that we had seen earlier. We made it just in time for the rain to start. And down it came!!! Great wifi and two beers later it started to relent. We left and caught a taxi back to the boat. Got changed a see were very wet. had lunch and a sleep. The humidity is a killer. We had a shower then and headed to ... read more

Day 5 We had to wait to be allowed off the ship as we needed clearances from local authorities because of coronavirus. When we got off we negotiated a scrum of touts to get a Water Taxi in to town $5 pp. A lovely ride which took us past boats that were shipwrecked during the last cyclone. Nothing has been moved to cleaned up. Nowhere to put the wrecks presumably. Easily found the yellow building which housed the Duty Free store. Very cheap prices 1.75 litre Hendricks ($85). Decided to come back to it after a bit of exploring. We found a cafe and had a Tusker beer and used the wifi. We then went for a walk around town and through the markets. Bought two pieces of pineapple wrapped in banana leaves. Juicy and sweet. ... read more

Day 1 - Departure from Sydney Harbour We travelled via the bus to Sydney and then a taxi to the Overseas Terminal. Checked in to the boat which was easy and smooth. We had managed to get a suite for this cruise. Our bags took a while to arrive so we went to have lunch at the Windjammer buffet and treated ourselves to a glass of bubbles. That evening we had our first sampling of the Concierge Club which we could access due to our suite booking. It is open 4.30 - 8 for free drinks and hot/cold nibbles. We had dinner in the Cascade restaurant and then returned to the club lounge. Day 2 - At Sea A light breakfast as we had been invited to brunch today. We sat at a table at the ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Abu Simbel March 28th 2019

We passed through a lock yesterday after being entertained by local traders trying to sell us outfits to wear for tonight’s party as well as tablecloths and towels. Many of us had already purchased an outfit on board or at a local market but they continued to throw things to the guests, haggle over prices and then either return the goods or send money. Some goods eneed up in the water but I think they did OK. The galabyea party on board that night is where everyone dressed up “like an Egyptian”. An early night for us though as we had to get up early for our trip to Abu Simbel. We listened though as the bass thumped through the boat. Up at 4am for our trip to Abu Simbel. It is a 3 hour road ... read more

If you want to catch up there is an entry for the Pyramids. Didn't want to create too many emails. Our tour has taken us to Alexandria where we visited the National Museum, the Catacombs, the New Alexandria Library, before moving to El Alamein to visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery including the grave of the youngest Australian soldier buried there. He was 16. There are 7367 graves here. We returned to Cairo for a visit to the Egyptian museum which deserves it's own post. (if I get time). Then to Luxor. KARNAK TEMPLE AND LUXOR TEMPLE Everything about the Karnak Temple is huge. The site covers 2km and is large enough to contain 10 cathedrals. Karna was the most important place of worship in Egypt during the New Kingdom. Construction began in the 16th century and ... read more

Well today was our visit to the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx amongst other things. We had seen the pyramids from our hotel but nothing prepares you for their size. Our Egyptologist Hassan explained and showed us the cuts on the bedrock and the process of how they were built. The Great Pyramid believed to have been built as a tomb for the pharaoh Khufu is the only remaining one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still intact. It was the tallest building in the world for over 3800 years and took over 20 years to build. There are an estimated 2.3 million blocks, some weighing 800 tonnes. It was originally covered in limestone casing stones some of which can be seen at the base. The changed topography of the surrounding land due to ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra March 21st 2019

We arrived at Petra with apprehension that it would rain. The walk in from the entry gate took us past many Nabatean monuments built more than 2000 years ago. The Nabateans buried theIr dead in intricate tombs that were cut out of the mountainsides. Petra came under lots of other influences including Roman and Byzantine before being deserted following an earthquake and changing trade routes. The Siq, the narrow gorge that leads visitors into Petra, resulted from a natural splitting of the mountain. Originally there was a triumphal arch spanning the entrance to it. We walked along the cobblestone paths dodging horse drawn carriages, camels and donkeys and many other tourists. The entrance to the Treasury reveals Petra’s most impressive facade. It is 40 metres high and decorated with Corinthian capitals, friezes and figure. It is ... read more
