We spent the morning in San Felipe for a much needed day of rest. The morning was shopping and playing in the water. It was nice, but San Felipe is even hotter than Valle. We had an absolutely wonderful lunch at a friend of Carmen Velasquez's. After lunch we relaxed for a while and then everybody chose to go back to El Oasis to spend some more time with the kids. When we arrived at El Oasis, the kids were waiting with filled water balloons and we were doused again. We had time to say some tough good-byes to the kids. Some of the kids invited youth to their homes for dinner. Mario invited some of the workers to share a birthday cake for his wife. We will see the kids leave for school on the ... read more

Sunday finished off the work we set out to do - the fence is done, the office is done, the kitchen is done and we painted the roof structure on the trailer. VBS wrapped up its last day with the kids staying for more than an hour afterwards to keep dinging the songs and to have an all-out water balloon fight. After day 1, the team was really questioning if it was going to work. The bigger kids were giving the leaders some trouble but each kept getting better and all ages really loved the program at the end. I can see that it is going to be really difficult to leave tomorrow. Everybody has become really close to the kids. Sunday night the church had a real nice program honoring us and made beautiful handicrafts ... read more

El Oasis has a church here on campus, a nice little church of about 75 - the friends and families of El Oasis. We presented Sabbath School and church featuring Jean, Joanna, Marilyn and Vivian. Afterwards we were treated to a wonderful traditional potluck giving our food crew a much needed break. After day 4 of VBS we drove to downtown Valle about miles away to see the church school (about 150 kids) and church in town. There are about 200 members of a town of about 400. At the church in Valle we saw our old church pews. It was wonderful to see how beautiful they look in their church. The 2-section long pews that broke down to 2 pews and the sanded and stained the unfinished end to match. It was really special to ... read more

We had a really good day on Friday. The girls have finished painting the main entrance gate. Jerry and Ed set all of the posts and stretched the fence. We are just missing the last connecting rods for the top part of the fence. Pastor went to Ensenada to pick up the materials, but unfortunately the sections were not the right length and his car broke down along the way back. Mario, who works at El Oasis, went into Ensenada in the afternoon to get the right pieces - it's about a 2 hour drive through the desert and winding through the mountains to get to Ensenada. Marilyn Calvin Gloria, Joanna and Eunice have just about finished the office. Calvin re-wired the new addition to the office and the the new paint job looks great. The ... read more

Well, surprise to use, we have Internet access at El Oasis thanks to a donation form Baja 1000 motorcyclists. We have to drive up to the access point near the office, but hey we're connected. Our first day was a full travel day. It worked out pretty well. The flight was fine to San Diego, but it took us a full hour to get our vans back. We piled in the luggage sure enough it barely fit. We did our grocery shopping and tool shopping and I thought there would be no way that it would fit but somehow we crammed it all in and off we went. Border crossing was no problem but signs were. I made the famous mistake of making the wron g second turn to Ensenada and Ed starting following a taxi ... read more

Believe it or not, it has almost been 1 year since you last heard from us. We returned from Ecuador and took a leave of absence to return to our jobs and the rest of our lives. But we are ready to hit the road again with a new group and a new project. This year we are visiting an orphanage in Valle de Trinidad, Mexico located between Ensenada and San Felipe. We will be hard at work on the heat of the desert, building fencing and roofing as well as painting and other maintenance work. Ed Politano and Jerry Patricio will be our construction leaders. Arleen and Vivian will be leading the Vacation Bible School program based upon the Avalanche Ranch program in Spanish. Joanna Gardner will be our spiritual leader. We are excited about ... read more

We had just landed in SFO and Ale said, "Can we turn around and go back to Ecuador?" I think that sums it up. An amazing trip that none of us will ever forget.
