September 2nd - September 6th -- Edinburgh Traveling usually involves some delays and we experienced one on our trip to Edinburgh. Our train was delayed for three hours because of fires beside the track that had been started by a steam train -- now there’s something you don’t hear every day! We were compensated, however, as we met a man who had very similar interests and even occupation to David. We had a great conversation until he left us about half way to Edinburgh. We arrived at our B&B at about 10:30 pm and were met by Ian, who carried my very heavy suitcase up the three flights of stairs to our room on the top floor. Davenport house is an 1820 Georgian townhouse on a cobblestone street - absolutely spectacular! Our room had 12’ ceilings. ... read more

August 30th - September 2nd -- London Took the train from Bath to London. In London we boarded a train on the Underground and arrived at the station near our hotel. The Sheraton Park Lane Hotel is a five minute walk across Green Park to Buckingham Palace. We dropped off our luggage and went on a tour of the palace. David’s camera and pack were taken away prior to the tour as photos are not allowed in the palace. It saved his back, but he didn’t seem to appreciate this. (David’s comment: Took part of my soul away..., it was troublesome...). There is so much to write about for this part of our journey, but I want to make this brief. Some of places we saw were the Tower of London, The Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s ... read more

August 28th & 29th -- Bath Bath! Oh, I could live here! What a truly wonderful place! We stayed at a beautiful B&B close to the centre of Bath called the Villa Magdala that was less than a 10 minute walk to the famous Roman Baths and the beautiful Abbey. We took a tour of the Abbey and walked up the 220 steps to the top. On our last evening, we went to the thermae spas. There are three different pools and a steam room, each on its own floor of the four-story building. The steam room consists of four separate clear, round rooms, each with its own fragrance -- sandalwood, lotus flower, frankincense, and eucalyptus. Floating in the warm water in the rooftop pool, we listened as the ten bells in the Abbey rang out ... read more

August 27th -- Day Seven -- Farewell Ireland & Crossing the Irish Sea Left for England today via an overnight ferry from Cork to Swansea. The sea which is often stormy was fair for this crossing. Even so, I had a poor sleep and spent much of it looking out the small portal window watching the waves and seagulls as they were lit up by the ships lights. Of the sleepless nights I’ve spent, this will be one of my most memorable.... read more

August 26th -- Day Six -- The Big Day! David was up at the crack of dawn preparing to take the photos along with a small army of family and friends rushing here and there. Guests arrived and the big event came off without a hitch (except for the appropriate hitching up of the lovely couple). Aunty Glenys performed the ceremony (I already explained the DIY affliction), and I was asked to read a poem. Met a number of Karen’s relatives, including her 94-year-old grandfather, Sonny. Saying he’s a “colorful” character would be an understatement. I understood little of what he said except when he looked me over and said to David, “Got yourself a good one!” He then looked at my sister, Terri and said, “I want a picture of that one!” She did look ... read more

August 25th -- Day Five -- Wedding Preparations Now, when most people get married they call a caterer, rent a hall, choose a wedding dress, arrange for flowers and send out the invitations. Our family has never done this. We gravitate to the do-it-yourself event. Perhaps this is a psychological affliction or self punishment. Some members, my sister Terri and Auntie Glenys are especially affected. (I won’t go into details as it would take a small book.) On the first day of our arrival, James and Karen met us at the airport with a small car filled with all manner of wedding paraphernalia -- candles, candle holders, napkins, and bottles and bottles of wine. (Apparently at an Irish wedding, it is customary to have 1.5 bottles per person in addition to beer, liqueurs and of course, ... read more

August 24th -- Day Four -- Road Trip & Cork Driving in Ireland is an experience that is difficult to describe. It’s like telling someone what something tastes like. Now, to be fair, I’m not the one driving; I’m the one being driven. David does the driving. The roads are narrow, fast and winding. At any moment another car may pass very quickly, or you may find yourself behind a slow moving piece of farm equipment. Roundabouts may have rules, but we’ve yet to discover what these may be. Stopped at an Abbey on the way to Cork. David got some wonderful photos and I got bit by a wasp. The Abbey is still in operation and its members observe silence at various times during the day. Perhaps the wasp was trying to enforce the rules? ... read more

August 23rd -- Day Three -- Blarney Castle Today, I did one of those bucket list items -- I kissed the Blarney Stone! Not sure if I will be given the gift of eloquence as promised, but it did give my back a great stretch. We toured the grounds and the castle. I especially enjoyed the fairy garden. You can see how stories of leprechauns and fairy-folk came from this land, every step one takes opens up another delight for the eye. Just a magical place!... read more

August 22nd -- Day Two -- Our 3Oth Wedding Anniversary Mediaeval castles are wonderful to visit, but there are reasons why we no longer live in them (see wedding preparations). However, if you want to celebrate something special, I highly recommend them! In the morning David and I woke to a wonderful breakfast complete with champagne and orange juice. We spent a lovely afternoon on the grounds of a former estate. I love the trees in Ireland. Patrick told us the Yew trees at the castle are thought to be between 600 to 800 years old. The trees on the estate included sycamore, chestnut, Birch, Fir and Oak. I have to wonder if there has ever been a massive forest fire in this land. The weather on this day was warm, but not hot. There was ... read more

Finally have some time and a relatively decent internet connection so I can update my travel log. I will post our fabulous week in Ireland and time in England over several posts rather than one long post. I can’t possibly write everything I’ve seen or thought, but I will give some highlights. August 21st -- Day One -- Blackwater Castle Spent the day getting familiar with our surroundings. Patrick, the owner of the castle, is a natural-born story teller. His love and passion for the castle and the history of the area were evident and I wish I had had more time to listen to his tales. ... read more
