14 July - well here we are in a wee village called Litton Cheney, at a very traditional YHA. Arrived here in the dark after getting back from Jersey and extracting our car from the long term car park, this proved challenging with the pay machines not working and a long queue of very patient people! Spent the next 2 days exploring the start of the Jurassic Coast, famous for its towering stratified cliffs and where they filmed the TV series "Broadchurch". Blu had a go at impersonating Danny's body on the beach but don't think he will win any awards for it! Spent a night at Torquay and visited Agatha Christie's holiday home at Greenway on the Dart River the next day. This was a particular highlight or me, being a Christie fan since my ... read more

Why Jersey? Well, is a place that Blu has always wanted to go, as was the home of Gerald Durrell and his wildlife park, and Blu has been a big Durrell fan since he was a child. So, after a rather bad nights sleep at Bournemouth, due to some very drunk young people staying at the hotel, we took the Channel Ferry over. A large fast ferry, takes about 5 hours to get there via a stop at Guernsey. Our first night we stayed at Gorey, a small fishing village that sits under a castle, very atmospheric. We were up at the hostel on top of the hill so we had a steep climb up from the bus stop at the pier, not so good on a hot day. The hostel was rather strange, a huge ... read more

Our wee FOG cottage (Flat over Garage) was great once you got used to the sloping ceiling! Was on a PYO berry farm on the South Downs and on the family estate, Lisa and Andy were wonderful hosts and found a spare pop up bed for Alister who joined us for 2 of our 3 nights there. We walked up to Chanctonbury Ring in the morning, then picked Alister up in Brighton and took a stroll out on the dramatic Seven Sisters cliffs. Brilliant sunny day. Was nice to go back 'home' and prepare a meal and chat over a drink in the evening. Tuesday we visited Arundel in the morning, popped home for lunch and headed down to Brighton as Alister had a job interview there (long story, he ended up getting a different job ... read more

Friday 3 July - Picked up our rental car, was a strange system, we could choose any car from Group 1 (economy!) that had keys in it, and amongst a row of black and white cars it stood out, a yellow and black Citroen! Our Hurricanes car! No choice really. Headed off to see the real England, but first a visit to Kew Gardens, which are huge - and quite stunning. Got to our Kent Farm accommodation late after we called in to see the pub where we worked in 1980, the Bulls Head in Chiselhurst. Next day we were full on, visited Leeds and Castles, both splendid, especially with all of the summer flowers out. Funny thing about Leeds, it was very expensive, so we decided to walk on the public footpath get a look ... read more

28 June - This time round we had 5 days to spend in London. Amazingly we had struck a heatwave again, the same as in 2013 almost exactly 2 years to the day. Sunday we took it easy, both very tired from a full on week in Russia, met Alister at the Marylebone Fayre in the afternoon and had dinner together, Monday we spent the day at the Tower of London. Hadn't been there for 35 years and enjoyed the experience. Thought the entry price was steep, as most things in London are, but we are both seniors now in UK terms which made it cheaper, and there was such a lot to see, it was well worth it. Tuesday we decided to have a go at getting into the grounds at Wimbledon for the Tennis. ... read more

26 June. Today we had another treat in store, the Summer Palace of Peter the Great or Peterhof outside the city. More lavish grandeur inside the palace and the gardens were magnificent, with fountains everywhere as Peter loved fountains and water features. So much gold everywhere too, it was used extensively in most palaces, cathedrals and on domes in St P and also in Moscow. By this stage we were getting quite blasé about the grandeur of the Tsars, but it is impressive. After the tour, Blu was very happy as we came across a craft beer restaurant. We tried a great porter and had mussels which were small compared to NZ but very good. Wandered around for a while, tried out the metro to visit a monastery across town, St P also had very smart ... read more

24 June After an uneventful train journey with our 2 Russian men, woke up fresh in St Petersburg and met by our guide Helen, who whisked us all off to breakfast at a nice cafe just near our hotel. We then embarked on a driving tour of St P, which we discovered is a beautiful elegant city, they call it the Venice of the North. A series of canals run through the city as well as the large river and their are beautiful buildings and churches everywhere you look. Took a nap in the afternoon before venturing out to the Singer Cafe (inside a huge bookstore with a view over Kazan Cathedral) for tea and yummy cake. St P is the kind of city you can just wander around for hours, which we did! Made our ... read more

22 June Another exciting day in Moscow, met by Luba at the hotel and visited the Kremlin, another eye opener, we had expected the Kremlin to be some sort of grey austere place, official KGB style, totally wrong! Kremlin just means fortress, and it was a large walled place with beautiful buildings and churches. We spent some time in the Armoury - a museum full of treasures, apparently this huge collection was only part of the royal treasure, when the last Tsar fell, a lot were hidden and have never been found to date. Over the years the Royal family of Russia and their empire had gathered up priceless artefacts from all over the world, a lot of them gifts from other empires. The Empress Elizabeth apparently liked carriages, there was a large room full of ... read more

20 June Early start for our flight to Moscow, its just over 3 hours away. Greeted by the Go Russia sign at Moscow airport, first time personally collected by a sign! Our hotel was very nice, just time for a cuppa and a lie down before negotiating our way to the Bolshoi ballet, which was our first Russian challenge. We knew it was 2 stops on the Green Line, but all the signs are in Cyrillic so bear no relation to the 'English' name. And of course when we got out, which building? The ballet was La Sylphide, a beautiful classic and the dancers, scenery and orchestra were marvellous. The cream was the beautiful old theatre (called the 'new' theatre just to confuse), it was extensivley renovated over several years and millions of $$ and sure ... read more

19 June Enjoyed an English breakfast at Oakwood B and B ( probably first of many!) B and B fine apart from the tiny bathroom - took some manoeuvring to use the loo! Spent the morning catching up, then met Alister at Westminster. Good to catch up, spent the afternoon wandering around the centre, called into Tate Britain to visit our favourite painting, The Lady of Shalott (the real one, not the one on our wall at home!). Had a lovely stroll through St James Park to Buckingham Palace, and ended up in Soho where we were amazed to find 'The Stockpot' restaurant. We used to eat here regularly in 1979-80, and on our last visit found it was closed, but apparently they moved, and here they were. Same good basic grub at a great price! ... read more
