April 10Met David for our old Havana (Havana Vieja) walking tour, we had saved the best part of Havana till last - lots of grand old buildings from the days when Cuba was wealthy, and amazing architecture. After the tour, we said farewell to Gabrielle :-( then the girls had liqueur coffee and cake at La Escorial cafe in the plaza, while the boys went to the Boutique Brewery opposite! (not Scarlett and Nathan of course!). Went up to the Camera Obscura, which gives a live 360 birds eye view of the city, complete with a hilarious commentary! Did a bit of souvenir shopping along the pedestrian mall, then wandered up to Parque Central for a snack. Rained heavily early evening, just when we were heading out for our final group dinner, it was a traditional Cuban ... read more

April 6 Happy birthday to me! Carmen our host gave me a Cuba key ring and there was a card from the Beatons, after breakfast it was off to Baracoa, our last day in the bus with Ivan. We stopped at Guantanamo for coffee then it was a scenic drive to Baracoa over a big mountain range, 5 hours drive all up. After checking into our casa with Miriam and family about 2, we set off on an orientation tour by local van, which turned out to be a surprise birthday BBQ for me!! Wow! The van arrived at a lovely river, where there was a roast suckling pig on a spit and a small group of musicians singing happy birthday! Lunch was amazing, pork, black bean dish, rice, salad, plantain chips and bread, served in ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba April 2nd 2013

April 2 Was about a 4 hour run through to Camaguey, where we were staying in a hotel for a change. Usual orientation walk after lunch then coffee in the square with our group. Ordering coffee can be interesting in different countries, what you get can be totally different to what you think you order! Here a latte was a small cup of black coffee! Blu and I needed to find an ATM, this proved to be another Cuban experience, when we finally found one, we had to wait in line for over half an hour! Stuff we take for granted at home is not here, no Wifi, ATMs only in large cities, and to use the Internet you go to a government agency and show your passport before you can buy a card to use the ... read more

March 30 Left about 9 for Trinidad via Santa Clara, where we visited the Che Guevera museum, memorial and burial place, very interesting and most important to Cuban people. Che and the Castro brothers are national icons and everywhere you go there are photos, posters and signs about them and "Vive la Revolucion"! There are statues and monuments all over Cuba to other heroes of the revolution, such as Jose Marti, Camilo Cienfuegos and Frank Pais, and streets across Cuba are named for them. It was a beautiful but very steep and windy drive through to Trinidad across the mountains and down through the national park. Got to Trinidad in the early afternoon and our group went off to different home stays (casas) for the next 3 nights. We stayed with Eugenia and Nancy, who were ... read more

March 27 We were both excited, but especially Blu, about going to Cuba. Caught the Isla Mujeres ferry across to the mainland and then a bus to Cancun airport. we were surprised to find the flight time to Havana was only 45 minutes, it is so close to both Mexico and Florida, but we went forward 2 hours in time which was a bit confusing. It took about an hour to get our bags at Havana airport, but we finally arrived at the Hotel Nacional which was rather grand. It was "the" hotel in pre-revolution Cuba, and many famous people stayed there in the 50s and 60s, their photos adorn the walls as proof. Built in the 1930s, it is a national icon. Our room was like an old American style hotel. Not our usual budget ... read more

March 18 Headed to Merida on the bus, 2 hours - buses a great way to travel here, cheap and efficient. Nomadas Hostel in Merida is great but our room was hot, we soon found out why there were 4 fans in the room! Met lots of interesting travellers during our stay there including the amazing Connie, an 81 year old grandmother from Michigan travelling on her own! The hostel pool was a great place to relax, with several hammocks strung across the water. Had a huge thunderstorm in the late afternoon which cooled the place down for a while as being inland it was generally hot and humid. Went down to the plaza, a very large leafy square in the middle of town, and visited the cathedral of St Ildefonso, the oldest church in Latin ... read more

13 March Decided on an extra night in San Christobal, to wander round the streets of the old part of the city. Weather here is cool, being 2000 m above sea level. Visited the central markets, a great way to see local people going about their business, it was a huge busy market, lots of produce, meat, chickens, fish etc. In the afternoon we went to Na Bolom, the former residence of Hans and Trudy Blom, archaeologist and anthropologist, who worked and studied with the Mayan indigenous people for about 50 years and left a legacy of photos, artefacts etc. The head Chamolean had 4 wives and 20+ children and lived to 104! Was a cold night, our evening meal was at a restaurant with a fire going! Meals here usually so big that it is ... read more

Ola! Mexico Part 1 Somehow felt like this was the day our trip really began, California being a good entree for what lay ahead. Travelling cheap also means some personal sacrifice, up at 4.15 to go to Mexico via the local (trolley)train to the border town of San Ysidro, from there just walked across the border to Tijuana ( border control more interested in Mexicans going in to the US, not us going out)then taxi to airport. A long way to our first destination, about 5 hours flying time and 4 hours at Mexico City airport, Aeromexico were just fine. Finally arrived in Chiapas de Corzo, which is a small town near to Tuxtla Gutierrez, and the first (Chiapas state) city founded by the Spanish in 1528. Collapsed into our concrete base bed for a long ... read more

3 March It was a long day as we had two March 3s. Headed off in good time to the airport then queued for 40 mins to check in! Plane then delayed so no time to dawdle in Auck! Quick flight to LA with tail wind, 11 hours. Blu had a duff TV screen -only managed one movie which was a good one (Sapphires). Entry to the US took ages, then got out to the Alpine Inn in Anaheim, yum pizza for lunch and a wander around, shrimp dinner at Bubba Gumps , crazy fun atmosphere, very American - the entire staff gather round customers who are celebrating birthdays, and chant and clap loudly! Walked round to Disneyland to watch the fireworks display, tired now. 4 March Disneyland, great day! Did heaps, skipped on the scary ... read more

On 14 March we went up to the Hokianga, a beautiful region about 4 hours north of Auckland, to attend Katy and Brett's wedding. We had a wonderful weekend - it was a beautiful wedding set right in the heart of this beautiful and unspoilt region of NZ. The wedding venue was on the waterfront of the Hokianga Harbour and the sun came out just in time for the big event. And best of all, most of our extended family were able to be there to celebrate with the happy couple! We would like to share our photos with other wedding guests, so if you would like copies of any of the photos FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY, please feel free to download direct from this site. Or we can send you electronic copies by email. NOTE ... read more
