Well here we are at Hotel 81 Heritage in Kampong Glam, in the Malaysian /Arab quarter of Singapore, a small hotel in a former "shop house" and close to Bugis. Good overnight flight across from NZ, arrived before 7am so spent the morning pottering around the area till check in. Interesting district with lots of history and nice architecture. Had a nap in the afternoon then a wonderful time catching up with Joyce and her family over a traditional Singaporean meal, followed by a visit to see their new apartment in the suburbs. On Tuesday we visited the Sultan Mosque and the Malay Heritage Centre just near our accommodation, then spent the afternoon at the Gardens by the Bay, a relatively new attraction and quite remarkable. It is huge, with lots of themed gardens, the stars ... read more

15 AugustRain, heavy, cool and wet all day! Cut our losses on the scenic tour stuff, and went to Ross Castle which was a very old castle keep, took a guided tour then visited Muckross House, which was also excellent, entry by guided tour only, lovely stately home. Drove to Nenagh and found an excellent B and B - Abbey View, Sharne the owner is a real character. Had everything you might possibly need and lovely décor with excellent Irish breakfast for 60 Euro. Generally, like in the UK, the B and Bs were excellent and quite good value at around 50-60 Euro double, very comfortable with huge Irish breakfasts. We really liked the Irish equivalent of black pudding which is called white pudding and an entirely different taste and texture to its UK cousin! A ... read more

Europe » Ireland August 10th 2013

10 August Walked around Donegal Town, feeling slightly hungover from our Irish pub session the night before, then drove out to Slieve League Cliffs, wow, some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe and a very scenic drive out through very isolated and rugged country. Headed down to Eniskillen in County Fermanagh (crossing back into Northern Ireland again) and visited the castle in the middle of town, home of the Maguire Chieftains (my g-g mother was a Femanagh Maguire) and also to a museum. there was some interesting info about the Maguires but it didn't really helpmy ancestry investigations, assume we go back somehow though. Crossed back into Eire and down to Sligo, drove around till we found a B and B, 60 Euro, very comfy, great breakfast! Had pub grub dinner downtown, good bangers and ... read more

6 August Our first day on Irish soil since 1980! We were excited at the prospect of revisiting the country many of our ancestors emigrated from. Took an Easyjet flight from Glasgow to Belfast, short flight -30 mins after waiting for them to extract the bird from the engine! Picked up our rental car, nice to get an upgrade from our usual "budget" car to a Hyundai 130, very roomy after our UK Fiat 500! Drove to Antrim town, pottered around the shops then had a sammie picnic lunch in the sun at Lough Neagh. Went to the Antrim Castle Gardens- the castle itself was destroyed by fire, with very little of the buildings remaining but the gardens were lovely and free too! Drove up to Ballyclare near Belfast and checked into Templeton Hotel, OK but ... read more

18 June 6am ferry to Hvar, fast ferry takes 1.5 hours, catamaran. Had breakfast and checked out a place to stay, got a great apartment, very clean and new, for 40 Euro, right near the old town, bus depot and supermarket! Walked up to Fortress for the view and around the old town, lovely town! Very hot today, and sunny. Took a bus ride around to Jelsa, via Starigrad and some small villages, bus driver was crazy! Drove so fast, even round the corners! Witnessed a German tourist v Croat bus driver dispute, very funny! Went round for a swim at the beach then back for dinner, had our ham and salad, plus potatoes, home cooked! Went to a 9:30 pm Concert at the Franciscan cloister of the old monastery - Split Minders/ Partet with Jasenka ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik June 13th 2013

13 June Had a very relaxing start, egg on toast for breakfast. So nice to cook our own for a change! Went into Dubrovnik by 12: 30 ferry from the local jetty, entertained by a couple of Poms from Newcastle on the way. 40 min boat ride via Lokrum Island to drop off passengers, nice way to travel! Dubrovnik an amazing place, walked around the old town a bit and had a delicious slice of pizza from the hole in the wall place, then walked around the whole city wall, very hot sunny and tiring at the end, but great views all over the old town. Went into a couple of monasteries and churches, then walked up to the fort outside the wall for a great view over old Dubrovnik. Had dinner at a pizzeria, excellent ... read more

10 June Nice day. At Sarajevo. Hostel had dining area and kitchen so able to do breakfast there. Went on a walking tour at 10 with Neno, who was a very enthusiastic guide, it was a free tour, just give a tip at the end! Got a great insight into the history, what an interesting city! Sad stuff happened in the ' 90s of course, learnt lots about that. So different and with such cultural and religious diversity - Orthodoxy, Islam, Judaism and Catholicism all co-existing together. There is a mosque, Catholic and Orthodox church and a synagogue all within the small city area. The influence of the Ottoman empire is very evident in the architecture of the city. Had lunch at a small self service place, very interesting food, we joined with a British couple ... read more

5 June Key Tours Day 3 Spent the morning at Olympia, a very interesting site. Was great to see the stadium where the games were held in BC. Another warm day. We spent the morning there, there was a special sports museum, then at the end, another museum with relics from the digs. Lunch stop was at a buffet restaurant, nice for 12 E, sat in the shade afterwards. Drove to Delphi in afternoon, a very scenic drive with rural and coastal views, and a stop at the new bridge at Patras. The road to Delphi was amazing, winding up the hills to the top. We were in a lovely hotel with a view right over the valley, millions of olive trees and then the sea in the distance. Had a swim in the pool and ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens June 1st 2013

1 June Arrived at the port at Piraeus and left the boat about 7. After a coffee and snack at the train station, caught the train into the city, not sure where our hotel was, so got off at Omonia and asked a police officer! Was a couple of stops in the other direction, President Hotel. Nice hotel and a room on the 18th floor with a view over Athens. Good value as a bit out of the centre. Too early to check in, so left our bags and caught a bus to the National Archeology museum. Free internet in the foyer! Spent a few hours there, there was a huge collection of sculptures and artefacts from around Greece. Also an interesting special exhibit on the Wreck of the Akothira. Back to the hotel for a ... read more
