Thursday 2 March 2017 After a fantastic 2 weeks in Norway on the MS Spitsbergen we attempted to fly to Iceland on a 6.10pm flight that was heading to Copenhagen before connecting with a flight to Reykjavik. The flight was delayed 2hrs in Bergen and we missed our connecting flight forcing us to stay in Copenhagen for the night (at the expense of SAS fortunately). Stayed overnight at the Hilton Hotel (the one at the airport). Very comfortable place and was within walking distance of the airport. All under cover too, so we did not have to brave the sub 0 temperatures in Denmark. We changed some Australian currency in Denmark into Iceland Kroner. THIS WAS A BIG MISTAKE! Without thinking about it, we lost money on the change into Danish Kroner (DKK) then lost more ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Kirkenes February 27th 2017

The last port of call northbound is a place called Kirkenes. On the surface, this town is very much like the others. The colours and styles of building are very similar to the other small villages we have seen on the way north. Kirkenes is located on a fjord which freezes over in winter. They have a snowhotel which is made of snow and only operates in winter. They are about 15kms from the Russian border and not too far from the Finnish border. Looking at a map of this area, you can see where Norway shares a border with 3 other countries – Sweden, Finland and Russia. We were taken to the Snowhotel (which is a hotel made out of ice and snow) and were able to get a close up look at some reindeer, ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Honningsvag February 27th 2017

The ship docked at Honningsvag. This little village boasts 2.5 supermarkets and 5 pubs. The locals make their living through fishing and the production of Stock Fish. Stockfish is unsalted air dried fish. It lasts for a long time and is easily re-constituted into moist fish. We had some on the ship – both dried and re-constituted. The dried stuff is a great way to carry and consume protein without worrying about it going off. We travelled to the North Cape in a bus. There were 3 buses in total from the ship. North cape is the most northern part of Norway and continental Europe. The latitude is N 71.10.21 degrees. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. It ... read more

The snowfall continues as we head north to Tromso. We stopped at Finnsnes for a short time – enough to be impressed by the land(snow)scape. This must be where people got inspiration for winter wonderland pictures, songs and so on. Quite magnificent. Check out the photos. Tromso is the largest city in northern Norway, population 70,000. We arrived amidst falling snow and it continued to snow sometimes lightly and other times heavily for the whole 3 hrs we were there. Despite the weather, we headed up the mountain on the cable car. Our visibility at times was only 10-20 metres but on some occasions we were able to see down onto Tromso. We had a great time up on the mountain. Check out the photos. The northern lights appeared again tonight. Again they were weak, but ... read more

Viking Feast On our arrival at Stamsund at 7.15pm, it was snowing as we left the ship. We boarded a bus and were taken to a Viking feast. We had a great time as we were invited to drink and eat as much as we wanted. The whole event was a re-enactment of what it might have been like to be invited to the Viking Chiefs table, including all of the Skols – we had at least 2 or 3 glasses of mead through the night. Mead is fairly yummy, and pretty potent on the alcohol content. The people re-enacted all the actions including dancing and singing. I would recommend this to any traveller in the Stamsund – Svolvaer area. Northern Lights On our return to the ship, we were treated to our first glimpse of ... read more

We crossed the arctic circle. We knew this because there was a little globe on a stand on an island we passed by. There was also an onboard activity where you were initiated into the Arctic Circle by having ice cubes and ice water poured down your back. Your reward was a shot of spirit of some type. So glad I don’t drink …. I have been working hard to stay warm – ice cubes down my back was not part of my plan. We got ourselves a certificate saying we had done the crossing so all is good. We had an hour or so in Bodo. Not a lot to see, but was kind of nice to get off the ship and just wander around. Weirdly we have been meeting our 10,000 step goal every ... read more

Europe » Norway February 23rd 2017

On first look it seems the Norwegians do it tough. Alcohol is heavily taxed – a pint of beer from the tap costs around 109NOK (17AUD). A small coffee from the deli costs about 30 NOK (4.5AUD). Food is expensive with a burger on board the MS Spitsbergen coming in at 250NOK (29AUD). A fish meal in a Bergen restaurant was about 445NOK (69AUD) for one person. Our taxi fare, for a 20 km trip was 530NOK (82AUD). All in all, if you lived the way Walter and I do in Australia then it would be fairly tough on the wallet. Not sure how the Norwegians manage but they seem to. As I look around the Norwegian population, everyone appears to be fit and healthy! Maybe they do not indulge in too much alcohol and eating ... read more

The MS Spitsbergen was waiting patiently for us as we boarded among 200 plus passengers (19 Feb). We could check in at 3pm but had to wait until 6pm to get into our cabins. Fortunately we located our travelling buddies, Kim and Stuart Grierson, fairly quickly, so we had a lovely few hours chatting and meeting other passengers. This ship is beautifully finished with good quality furnishings. The cabins and common areas both are very pleasant to the eye as well as being comfortable. The absolute best part of the service on the ship is the food. The breakfast and lunch offerings on this ship are buffet style. Some who know me well will attest to the fact that I have never been a fan of the "buffet" but the food selection and quality here is ... read more

Arrived in Bergen amidst the rain, but it wasn't too cold (7 degrees C). We are quite tired having been in transit for more than 34 hrs. Thankfully we slept fairly well on the overnight sector between Bangkok and Paris. Bergen appears quite pretty even in the rain. We had a very nice seafood dinner and fell into bed about 8.30pm. Could not do very much sightseeing due to the rain and it still continues to rain so we might be pretty limited here. Will try the Floibanen funicular today before we get onto the ship.... read more

Middle East » Turkey October 7th 2015

Kapadokya (Cappadocia) is an area in middle of Turkey on the Asian continent. It has snow in winter and we were told some very hot days 35+ degrees in summer. The topography here is interesting. There have been a few volcanoes erupt in the last 60 million plus years and the resulting ash and lava has left the area with reasonably soft sandstone. This sandstone is impacted by the wind and rain over the centuries to leave odd looking structures known as fairy chimneys. In this region, there has been evidence of the Hittites then Romans then Turks from 1071. The Turks came from Central Asia. In 1299 the Ottoman Empire took over the area and in 1453 Istanbul captured and made the Turkish capital. The hills and fairy chimneys have also been used over the ... read more
