The time we spent on the Gallipoli battlefields was so informative. I thought i knew the history but until I listened to the tour guide, and reading all the information at the various memorials I did not really have the full story. Our Turkish tour guide told the story with such emotion, he had a few of the tour group in tears. After being in Turkey for a few days and hearing about the last 4000 years of their history I would say that warfare was part of their culture. These people had been fighting for their bit of land for a long time. Their other secret weapon was their general, later to be called Mustafa Ataturk. He ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Kusadasi October 3rd 2015

Arrived in Kusadasi (pronounced Koo-Sha-dars-a) after a cold and wet ferry ride to land in a beautiful hotel (Otel in Turkish). The room we were given was very comfortable. It felt wonderful to have a spacious room with lovely bathroom and a great shower. The showers in all the Greek hotels (except our first one in Athens) were really small and awkward to shower in. Some were over bathtubs that were very high and with my crook knee it was really difficult. I have been so impressed with Turkey so far. The tour guides talk about the Modern Turkey and that is exactly what it is. It has great infrastructure and much better than Greece - solar everywhere ... read more

There are 6000 + islands and less than 450 inhabited. We visited three. Mykonos,Santorini and Samos. The water of these islands are crystal clear. A little like the Caribbean. But the beaches are not as welcoming. There are very gritty with small pebbles and not a lot of sand. I could not see anyone laying on a towel on these beaches but many places have beach chairs and umbrellas (for a fee of course) but I think you would need it. Santorini is an island section of a volcanic caldera that has been a covered by the sea. There are two other smaller islands also part of the same caldera (if you don't know what a caldera is ... read more

No trip to a city like Athens would be complete without a Food Walking Tour. We spent about 4 delightful and delicious hours wandering from street vendors to Bakeries, delicatessens, the meat, fish and vegetable markets and so on. I learnt quite a few things on that tour. Firstly that Moussaka is not an original Greek dish, neither are Dolmades or Baklava. I also tasted the delights of Loukoumades with syrup and ice cream. This dish is so delicious. Looks like a dough nut but tastes nothing like it. We saw a cook prepare Phyllo pastry for sweet and savoury pies. The way this fellow put the butter between the layers - about 4 of them – made my arteries blanch just looking at it, but the end result was so light and tasty, my taste ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens September 20th 2015

Our first full day in Athens was Sunday, 13th September. The weather is gorgeous, not too hot and only a little bit humid. This was to be our scooter tour. We were to find the tour company office, drive to the beach area south of Athens, jump on a motorized scooter and have fun! The best part of this story is that is exactly what happened. We had so much fun on those machines. I was a little concerned that I would not be able to keep my balance but it was so easy, even with my injured knee. About 5 minutes fiddling about, we were off to face the traffic. Costas, our guide, really looked after us. He seemed to know when I was not leaning forward enough when going up a hill, or not ... read more

Eager to get out and have a look we want for a wander in the area around our hotel. We are in an area called Psiri. The neighbourhood looks a bit of a shambles actually. I don't think there is one wall without graffiti on it. The odd thing is most of it is tags and where there are words, they are all in English! How weird is that? The only Greek I have seen is on formally prepared road signs or shop signs. It is all a shame as these people live among history in a daily basis. I couldn't think that you could live here and not notice the acropolis or many other ruins right there in front of you. There is an 11th century church in good repair right in the middle of ... read more

After 14 hrs on an Etihad 787-9 in First Class, we arrived in Abu Dhabi feeling pretty good. Slept well in my little hide-away. I have come to the decision that 1st class is the only way to fly, sadly I doubt I will have the experience again. The Etihad Premium Lounge is fabulous. The hummus was the best I have tried EVER! Can't wait to get into Athens this afternoon. I think we might eat Greek tonight ... hehe... read more

Just hanging around the lounge waiting for our call to board. We are both now travelling 1st class - the instant upgrade at the check in was about $200 cheaper than what we paid in the first round. I left the office today at 2.30 and find that I have only just given it a thought. That is what I call letting go of work and really relaxing into the holiday.... read more
