Geo: -20.2679, 148.716After our arrival in Airlie Beach at 7AM I checked into the Beaches Hostel and decided to take a nap until the town woke up. When I later went across the street to a nice little cafe to get a more substantial Brekkie than the usual cereal-toast combination I discovered to my surprise that they had German Bauernfruehstueck (Farmer's breakfast) on the menu. Prepared by a cook from Thailand and served by a waitress from Estonia ;) The afternoon I spent reading at the Airlie Beach Lagoon before heading out for Happy Hour drinks with my fellow backpackers.

Geo: -20.2679, 148.716The Greyhound Bus picked us up around noon and we drove to Hervey Bay, another beach town and gateway to Fraser Island's west coast. After a 3 hour wait I got on another bus which would take me all along Capricorn Coast to Airlie Beach. A 15-hour overnight ride! The good news is I won't have to pay for a hostel and save time. But that's about the only good thing about overnight travels. Along the way we stopped in tiny Town of 1770. The funny name comes from its historical significance as the place of Captain Cook's first landing in Queensland, which is why this stretch also calls itself 'Discovery Coast'. The full moon actually made the ride quite interesting as the light gave the bushlands a dreamlike atmosphere. Not a bad trade-off ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island August 31st 2012

Geo: -25.2168, 153.133We left our camp early today and headed back towards the southern part of Fraser Island. Along the way we stopped at the remains of the "Moheno", once the most luxurious ocean liner before they built the "Titanic". She was shipwrecked on the island during a cyclone in 1936 on her way to a scrap metal shipyard in Japan. After the wreck was photographed from every possible angle we moved on to spend some time at Lake Wabby. After a 30 min hike through a eucalypt forest we reached the lake which is surrounded on three sides by dense forest while the fourth side is a gigantic sand dune or sandblow. This place is not far from an old abandon army camp on the west side of Fraser Island where they used to train ... read more

Geo: -25.2168, 153.133After our Brekkie we hopped on our SUV's which truly deserve that name and drove further north to the only saltwater we were allowed to swim in, the Champagne Pools. A couple of eroded rock pools on the beach which frequently get flooded with fresh sea water. We then drove back to Indian Head viewpoint from where we watched Humpback Whales swimming by in the distance and Manta Rays hovering not far from the cliffs. As we drove away inland to our picnic place at Waddy Point we saw a couple of Dingos looking for food. The last stop of the day was Eli Creek where you just let yourself float downstream, similar to SlickRock in Sedona/Arizona. Back in the camp the fights over pots, cutlery and fireplaces ensured that no one got bored... ... read more

Geo: -25.2168, 153.133Packed all our stuff, food and water and beers onto the beaten up Land Cruisers and headed for the ferry to Fraser Island. The worlds largest sand island (75mi by 15mi). After driving along the beach for a while it was my turn to head inland through the rainforest to the crystal clear Lake McKenzie for a swim. So much fun steering a 4WD through sand :)On the way back we had a picnic by the beach and were greeted by an aboriginal guide before we headed far north to our camp. After some chaotic cooking the kids took over partying 'til midnight...Packten all unser Zeug, Essen und Wasser und Bier auf unsere zerbeulten Toyota Land Cruisers und fuhren in Richtung Faehre nach Fraser Island. Geo: -25.9021, 153.092With the weather being sunny, cool and breezy I walked down the endless Rainbow Beach today. Then we had our safety briefing for our 3-day 4-Wheel Drive camping tour to Fraser Island. And now I'm off for dinner and drinks with my fellow tour members. Should be fun the next three days!

Geo: -25.9021, 153.092After a tasty Brekkie on the patio I left Brisbane and took the Greyhound up the Sunshine Coast, all the way to Rainbow Beach. After some chats with fellow travelers I cooked dinner and spent the rest of the evening at the (for Australian standards) surprisingly affordable bar ;)Nach einem leckeren Fruehstueck auf der Terrasse verliess ich Brisbane und nahm den Greyhound hoch zur Sunshine Coast bis nach Rainbow Beach.

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Decided to take advantage of the nice hostel amenities and relaxed by the pool. Good time for a much needed catching up with my diary as well! Besides the pool this hostel also offers an observation deck, a small theater showing 5 movies every day, a full bar and a bistro which offers breakfast and dinner.

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Today i took the city bus to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Queensland is the only state which allows people to hold one of those fuzzy cute little creatures ;) This sanctuary also takes care of other animals such as Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, various Birds of Prey, Dingoes or Platypus. Needless to say it was a unique experience and more than worth the extra 16$ for holding one in your arms. I still think it is quite unbelievable that Koalas are only the size of a jelly bean when they are born and find their way into Mom's pouch! Also, Platypus are pretty funny animals. Kind of an OtterDuck.Heute nahm ich den Linienbus zum Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Early in the morning i left town to go on another Greyhound bus. Or so i thought. The bus doesn't show up but a different tour company, the "OZ Experience", miraculously has my name on their list. Turns out what i thought was the competition is owned by Greyhound as well. Just a smaller bus. Well, the seven of us who are the passengers of the day get in and we drive along the so called Gold Coast, a string of cities with high-rises, theme parks, surf schools and huge marinas including more canals than in Venice. A mix of Miami, Vegas and LA. And i think the only gold on this coast is made by the hotel resorts and casinos. Thank you, i pass. And off we go to Brisbane which we reach ... read more
